Hey Leonard, I hope this is the right place to ask this. The Calls and Gear section does not look too well attended as usual.
I have been asked by Hunters Specialties to recommend some 4 sound combinations for the PreyMaster. I would welcome any input that your members would want to contribute. Throw out the 4 JS sounds you would like to have available. I will throw them in the mix for consideration. I have my favorites but I want to know what others want.
Example: CT101G Vittle's A'La Jackrabbit
CT163 Coyote Pup Distress
CT168 Coywolf Bark\Howls
CT103 Luring Lips ( close range call )
This is my first time over here and it looks like you guys have a real good forum.

Howdy Gerald, I have not seen you around for a long time, great to see you and don't feel bad, I'm not retired yet either
hehehe. Your example of combinations look good to me, Good Hunting.

Hi Gerald, 1.Lone Howl 2. Group yip howl 3. Canine puppies(original) 4. Cottontail distress

WileyE has a great idea for throwing in some crows for realism! I would also think for us easterners throwing in some wild turkey for first choice or crows would be great. I was just telling the guys that fawn in distress that I do with my mouth calls works beatifully for the areas I hunt. If you take any of my suggestions, let me know so that I can be the first one to purchase, thanks.

Gerald,
The same as Rich H. I really like that canine pups in distress. It works! I can't come close to duplicating that with a mouth call.
You mentioned the Coy\Wolf. What's your experience with it. I think I could lose faith in that one. Never quite fiqured out what he's trying to say.

Well, Hi Gerald! Long time, no see!
I know you're mighty busy, but anytime you want to drop in, you are most welcome. I've said it many times, you are a class guy; I'm glad to have you as a friend.
As to the question: I don't have the numbers in front of me, but I can probably generalize?
If limited to four sounds:
1) grown jack
2) gray fox pup distress
3) canine puppies
4) yellowhammer
5) coyotes fighting over food

I've never had much luck with either real high pitched or real low pitched sounds. For example, Super Jack is a sound that doesn't work too well for me. Same with the high pitched Quail tape. Not sure at the moment who makes these sounds. Keep in mind that this is a non-scientific evaluation coming from just one man's experience so take it for what it's worth.
"Yellowhammer" works well for me, so does "Jackrabbit in Distress". One thing I've always wanted to see would be more "quiet" areas on the tapes. Not long quiet areas but more short ones. Constant, non-stop calling works, as you know, but I think it might be better with more short, quiet periods on the tape. I have no experience to base that on other than using a hand call. I can't call non-stop with a hand call so I've got more short quiet periods in my calling sequences. Hand calls work great and I can't but help wonder if a tape patterened after one wouldn't be better? I would think that this might distinguish the tape from the miriad of others that also have non-stop sounds.

Say hey Leonard, looks like we are trying to get a seminar together for the 1st week in June at the gun club. HS is working with Turners on this. If it comes about, I hope we can hook up while I am out there.
Steve, you make me jealous throwing out titles like that. Wish I had them...then again what good is it just having titles if they don't work. Just kidding...couldn't resist that. ;-)
Thanks for the input fella's these are good suggestions and we will take them to heart.
Good job with the board Leonard. Looks refreshingly civil compared to what I used to wade into.

Gerald, I'd be honored, just give me a date.
You know, if I had another choice, I would have listed Ravens! Coyote howls, I think they should be interjected at will, with a howler. If I only have four choices, I can improvise the coyote sounds, as required. Just my opinion.

Good hunting. LB
PS, I know you have had a bad experience with message boards, but nobody is going to mess with you, I guarantee it. Everybody is very happy to see you test the waters, no matter how briefly.

Gerald,
I think Leonard has has a valid point on the howls. A guy could always throw some in with a hand call or howler, if needed. It's hard to duplicate the multi-directional function of a howler with an electronic. Maybe a card with four good sounds that can't or are hard to duplicate with a hand call.
Welcome to the board! Looks like the link worked for you.

Hey Gerald,
Male Challenge Howl
101-C Jackrabbit
Yellowhammered Woodpecker
Crow Frenzy
This would cover a lot of bases.

I will let you know Leonard as it develops.
Thanks for the warm and fuzzy welcome board members. Justifying the time on the boards is harder now than it was way back. In addition to my duties to Hunters Specialties I am starting a new business that is not related to this industry so I am pulled two different directions. I really need 28 hours in a day.
I will try to jump on when I can but I suspect it will be most often when I have the need to pick your brains. That sounds pretty selfish but a sad reality when I wish it could be more for relaxing fireside chats with the calling brotherhood.
Thanks for the input on the sounds. You have helped hone my focus.Till later......

Can't believe I am back so quick but Bob's input generated a question in my mind.
Bob, give me some perspective on why you would want Frenzy versus Single Excited Crow. Do you feel that larger numbers of crow presence may enhance the confidence effect? I lean toward one or two crows in my perception of what might be desirable or am I splitting hairs? They both will work probably but would less be better?
Anyone else have an opinion on that?
Posted by Crow Woman (Member # 157) on March 19, 2003, 06:54 AM:
Gerald, my perspective on frenzy crows is... their call is much stronger and lasts longer, I think putting the coyote on a definate target of pin pointing where exactly meal time is located. I've seen that alot back east here.
my 2 1/2 cents worth

Posted by Wiley E (Member # 108) on March 19, 2003, 09:15 AM:
Gerald,
It would probably depend on what was natural to each area. In most of my cases, I would say one or two crows as you have suggested.
In areas with more crows, more crows may be more natural.
In areas of ravens, ravens may be more natural.
Anyway, you get the picture.
As I am sure you already know, there is usually no "one size fits all".
RH: "Gerald, if you miss the excitement of the good ol' days, just say so. We can take care of you. ( hint, just tell Wiley that you understand all lone howls)"
LMAO!
Behave yourself Rich!

Gerald-
I just want to tell you thank you.
I was just getting started calling, in 1985. I lived in Robinson, Tx. at the time. I came to your shop and met you. You took time out of your busy schedule to talk with me. You tuned a couple of calls and gave them to me, I still have and use the bite call. You also took me into the sound library and handed me four sounds to try.
I thanked you then for the products and the talk.
I thank you now for the time you took and the impression that you made one me at that time. It is nice to have received some good information early in the game.
Thanks again for you time
later pup / Jim McGill
I like the four that Rich Higgins listed.
Posted by Jay Nistetter (Member # 140) on March 19, 2003, 11:37 AM:
Is it possible to have a custom order list of all the sounds to check off 4 for a custom approach?
One guy may want a coyote howl and cottontail distress only for calling coyotes and use the other two sound slots for something entirely different like Hendrick's Foxy Lady or Mack The Knife.
Maybe a headphone jack for private listening so mamma don't cut you off for making too much racket?
Hello Gerald. It's been fairly quiet over here so try and behave yourself for once.

My take on what Bob had in mind; before he clarifies. Simple, he hunts crows. LB

The ones the have worked best for me are:
1)CT 116A Squealing Bird (personal favorite)
2)CT163 Coyote Pup Distress
3)CT 113 Gray Fox Pup Distress
4) Baby Cottontail
And also, welcome to the board.

20t-n-t,
Thanks, for the welcome, but I've been around from the old board. I just lurk mostly around here. I can't add much anyways with guys like Leonard, Rich, Jay, Frank and Wiley E.(Real "Coyote Gods"
) I just like to read what they have to say.
Plus I've always been told:
"It's better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than open your mouth and prove it."

Gerald,
I do hunt crows, but I like a "Crow & Owl Fight" for that. I was thinking of four sounds that could best be used for cats and coyotes in the most places. Those four,IMHO, have the best universal appeal and flexibility. I picked the frenzy over the single because I think it leans more to the cat side of the equation because they seem to like more "noise". I don't think it makes any difference to a coyote. Did I completely muddy the water??
Good luck with your new venture!!

Good to see you Gerald. I've had good luck with sounds similar to what Jbrad picked.
Yellowhammer Woodpecker
Coyote pup distress
Baby cottontail
Squealing bird
Greyfox pup has been a good one too. A lone howl is effective added to the rest. I normally do that with a handcall though.
Take care, Curt
