No, not howler, for this one. That's completely up to you.

I mean, as to hand calls: snowshoe, cottontail or jackrabbit....even if you don't have them in your area?

Closed reed, or open; such as a CritterCaller peewee?

I don't care; but you probably (consistantly) use one voice to begin a stand?

What is it?

Maybe none of the above?

Good hunting. LB

Been using one of them (Call of the wild) Circe cottontail for years. Hell, we used to get tons of them free at the state dinner dances, Leonard you remember picking them up off the dance floor. I never was real big on what type of call I used, I was more interested in the areas I was hunting in. If the animals were there, it didn't matter to much what you sounded like. People rely too much on what they sound like and I don't think it's necessary, Good Hunting.

always open reed for me. It's either a fawn call or I get the swawk box out and do some turkey. But I think hands down what gets them almost every time here in the hills of Pennsylvania has got to be the fawn in distress call, no matter what time of year.

Crow Woman

Is this what you were getting at Leonard?? If not, pass it off as a blonde moment, please, thanks you. I'm going back to my hole now.

I agree with Danny that most any distress sound will bring in less educated coyotes. Not so with heavily called areas in which surviving coyotes hear distress calls almost every day of the week. I wish everyone used just Circe cottontail calls. It would make it much easier for me. Danny, how long has it been since you called around the Phoenix area?

Thank You OneCoyote. I've been away from hunting for a couple of years and didn't feel right hanging around with hunters. But three weeks ago, that changed and now I can say, I'm proud to be among all of you... smiles

Rich, I never hunted to close to Phoenix, I kinda thought it would be like hunting close to LA. I have hunted around Wickenburg, thats about as close as I got. I do know what you're saying about hard hunted areas with the same old sounds. The way I sound on a call, most coyotes have never heard such a sound. Kinda like a dying buzzard and a mule all wrapped up in one, unique sound I must admit, [Wink] Good Hunting.

edit: Crow Woman?

Welcome to the New Huntmasters. I can't imagine what would force you to swear off hunters for two whole years?

and my fault; I forgot about the "eastern" situation. I seldom bother with a fawn bleat unless I'm hunting high timber. But, okay. That's an option, if you have no faith whatsoever, in distressed rabbit calls.

Good hunting. LB

Its good to see more and more gals on the board. Are you a hunter? If so what gun and caliber do you shoot? Please let an inquiring mind know?

I'm with most of you guys, any distress sound will work.I have been using only 2 calls(distress) for the last 10 years or so,The Sceery AP-6 variable and the AP-7 open reed calls, they make every sound imaginable and I have had great success with them. Before that I used circe closed reed cottontail, and Sceery closed reed jackrabbit calls.I definitely like the open reed, and variable calls better. They don't freeze up as easy and you can make more varieties of sounds.Just my 2 cents.GOOD HUNTING Chad.....

Guys, Crow Woman is no ordinary female.....First of all she maybe able to out shoot most of us to start with [Frown] .....and to top that......I seen a picture of her with a 60lb coyote she called in, [Eek!] one of many she has taken. This lady has also wrote a book about coyote hunting, it's called (Coyote Hunting Farm Style). Crow Woman, I'm happy to see you back and doing better. [Wink]

Oh yeah,

I almost forgot, in all this girly stuff...

I almst always start a stand with either the squeeker in my K&H #927 2 in 1 squeezebulb call tube, or the close range call in my Circe 3 in 1.
I do this to not scare away anybody close, but recent discussions of this have caused me to do some rethinking.

The only thing I do on a stand with any consistency is... no harm to the coyote population. [Big Grin]

Cool photo. Crow Woman, how did you train the coyote to sit like that, with the punishment or the reward system? Is that the 60 lb. coyote?

I ALWAYS have my Cronk open reed antler call hung around my neck.I seldom use a mouth call anymore, but when the need or desire wells up, I can make just about any sound I want to with it. Its forte is small rabbit distress, but it can play passable howls, barks, whines and fawn bleats. In the zippered pouch on my stool, there is a Nistetter closed reed cottontail call always at hand too.

Thanks Guys, it's great to be back! Leonard, we have tons of rabbits around but I have yet to hear them talk much. So after spending countless hours, well years out there at night, I found the faws do the most bleeting, which in turn calls the coyotes. So I got rid of the blonde hairs for a moment and started mimicking the fawns and what do you know, it looks like the coyotes back east here love venison maybe even more than I do... grins. I've also noticed that just before the turkeys leave the fields to roost for the night, they do an awful lot of squacking and almost never fails to call in a coyote. I just kinda learned from my own although odd kinda way what works for me anyway... smiles

Now to answer your other question about not hunting for two years. My Dad died and along with his death, so did I. He was my hunting partner, best friend, fishing buddy, hero. I had to take the last two years to learn how to walk on my own and hunt without him in a physical sense. Well three weeks ago, I decided to visit his hunting shanty, something I haven't been able to do since his crossing. Legs were a little wobbly but I did it anyway. Set up stand and at 5:45pm the coyote in the pic came out on the field and stood there. So I took one for my Dad and now I'm back. I just got home from taking another one. I'll wait til morning to see what I got.

The coyote was setting up all nice and purty cause I waited til the next morning to play fetch. Hunting by myself and that close to dark, the last thing I want to do is chase a possible wounded coyote into brush, so I let him go off and I go retrieve at first light. That's not the 60lber. The one pictured was a lightweight. I think he was a growing boy. His body structure is big along with his paws but he only weighed in at 32lbs. So I do believe he was going to be something big had he of lived. My 60lb coyote has a 5 1/2 foot stretch from nose to tail. I skinned him out and have him on my living room wall.

My choice of gun has always been my 243 Winchester model 70. Perfect for me, the most I shoot out is maybe 380 yards and that's pushing it just to the end of my fields.

Did I forget any other questions? hmmm...

oh yea, Danny, I just one of the guys, that's all, nothing more and nothing less. It's great to be back!

What's the first thing I reach for?

Well, its got to be my jackrabbit in distress tape. After that it's my medium range Circe.

Some of you probly heard this story before but years ago I used to practice with a .22 long rifle on running jackrabbits. One time I hit a jack in the hind quarters so the shot didn't kill it right away. As I was walking up to the jack it started crying for all the world just like a human baby would cry. Kind of a wwwwaaaaaaaaaaa........wwwwaaaaaaaaaa........... wwwwaaaaaaaaa...wwwwaaaaaaaaaaa.................

My Circe duplicates that sound pretty good.
