After the second shot on a double last weekend my ears were ringing for two days. I occasionally get some minor ear ringing when shooting larger calibers at big game but, this is the first time I've been bitten this bad by the 250. It was annoying as hell. Even the slamming of a car door or loud voices bothered my ears for a couple of days. Its finally subsided but I'm seriously thinking I need some protection while calling. My wife says I'm already deaf.
Sly,DAA, you guys mentioned in another thread about ear protection while hunting. The only thing I've seen advertised is the Walkers Game Ear. So do these types of ear protection really work? Whats the ups and downs of wearing something like this while hunting. I'd like to hear any and all comments about these products.
Thanks

Lonny, I just tried a pair of electronic muffs, Peltor Tactical 6s, for the first time last weekend. That was testing some loads. They were more comfortable and the electronics worked better than I expected. Haven't tried them on a stand yet, but I'm going to.
I've got that ringing in my ears 24/7/365. It has been getting steadily worse for years. It's gotten to the point that I am constantly fighting a flinch when I shoot anything much louder than a .22 Mag. And fairly common noises in the everyday world cause pain. So, anyway, never thought I'd get to the point I'd be thinking about hearing protection WHILE HUNTING, but I am...

Lonny, Like I mentioned befor, I love the walkers game ear, the only time that it is a pain is when I forget them or the wind is blowing hard, thing is generaly if its blowing that hard I head to the house anyway. I will turn the side that the wind is afecting off or down so not to get that distortion. I love them and my wife has to tell me to take them out, cause I forget their in. Yes the cost is up there but I did'nt know how much I was missind till I bought mine and now I think, how much is it worth to hear things that I had'nt for years. Its great to hear them comming befor you see them.
I highly reccomend them and you will to.

I got a pair of the tactical 6 peltors for christmas and am very pleased with them. My ears ring constantly due to alot of handgun shooting in my younger years without protection and working around turbin engines, since I hunt with a handgun even one shot makes my ears ring worse for weeks, I have worn the peltors all day without complaint and really like the amplification feature, my only problem is that I am experimenting with a howl call and the peltors block out the higher pitches and things don't sound right so I could be making bad sounds and don't know it.

Hi Lonny. I pretty much have the same thing going on that DAA speaks of. The constant ring. That Ted Nugent concert back in 80 didn't help things either. Everybody sounded like Mickey Mouse for about 3 days. LOL.
A few years back I was handgun hunting deer with a .44 mag. Got one on the second shot. Man I paid for that second shot. Never again.
Few years later I got one of those Savages with the brake you could turn on and off. That brake was great from the bench with earplugs. Shot my deer with the brake open and got that Ted Nugent feeling again. The brake has been closed since.
Gotta get me some of those muffs DAA mentioned.
Take care

Hey LN. How's things in Aurora? Used to live there in the 80s. Arvada and Westminster for awhile too. They get all those new roads and highways built? Traffic was a real bear back then. That was a serious boomtown for awhile. The sudden population growth made it hard to get around. I heard it is much better now.
Take care

Lonny, Huh? Know what you mean about those ears. I have started, too late, to stick an earplug in left ear before calling. Being a right handed shooter, my right ear is pretty well removed from the pop and the plug softens it pretty well.
