I'm asking here. I have a situation. I have my callers, lion mating tape, distressed fawn tape, deer urine and estrus urine(lion not mine).
Looks like I'm going to have a decent week-end and I have a half doz. places where I and people I know have seen tracks or animals recently.
What sequence would you call? Would you mix the sounds(I have two callers). The set-ups will be in huge clearcuts, me on stand above on the edge of a loading dock. Prevailing wind in all cases is cross wind.
One other thing, I will be using a fawn decoy. It's a Feather Flex fawn. I might have to stake it static. We have new laws here concerning "active" decoys for "game"birds and animals. I'd like to use it on it's stake but I'm finding out tomorrow (appointment with State Police/Game Enforcement) if it's considered to have "moving parts".
Thanks Guys.

If you have a choice, call them down to you, rather than from above. I've never used lion sounds, but I understand they are better? I have used goat and fawn and javalina and jack, mostly. A slow approach.
Good hunting. LB

Hey Leonard,
First, thanks.
I don't think I made my my set-up clear. My callers are remote. I was thinking of setting them down in the clear-cut with the decoy and scent. My large self will be above on the lip of the loading dock looking down operating the remote switch. Both machines will pick up the signal over 200 feet. Visibility while looking up in these darn cutovers is tough. Looking down into the openings is a breeze if the machine is far enough off. Picture a bowl or gentle sided ravine with the callers(machines) and decoy close to the bottom. I would be on the crosswind rim.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you are saying. Please reply concerning the info above.
Thanks, P.S. OR. Fish & Wildlife says that our lions start going into estrus right around Valentines day. I figured some Johnny Stewart chocolates would be appropriate. Bud [ February 04, 2003, 08:26 PM: Message edited by: Bud ]

Bud, I can't quite figure loading docks and your bushwacking location, except that it will be very difficult to see an lion attracted to your setup, unless he romps out into the wide open spaces. If he acts like most cats, he won't do that. I hope your loading dock allows you to see what's going on in the surounding brush.
As to my comment without knowing the situation, I am speaking in general terms that you may be able to apply. Given a choice, calling from the top of a mountain or the base of a mountain; you would do well to remember that any cat dislikes to have you higher than they are, as a general rule. They are inclined to come down to a call, but you seldom will have any luck calling from a high place and having a cat climb up to your location. (yes, exceptions exist)
Simply put, call them down; not up. It may not apply in this scenario, but if you keep it in mind, you will save yourself some wasted effort, one day.
Good luck, LB

Thanks Leonard,
That makes sense. I'll make sure That they are called down to my decoy and speaker and away from me. I'm going to use lion and deer urine at the decoy and speaker area. I'll be overlooking and yes, I will be able to see all around and into any openings. Other than setting up and climbing out my scent won't be within 80 yds. of the callers and decoy and there's a crosswind. I use rubber pacs that have been set in boiling water and scented(coyote).
Thanks again.

Bud; I guess it's now illegal to use a decoy with moving parts in your neck of the woods?
