I've noticed over the years that the coyotes I've called tended to come in and then circle clockwise around my stand. Not all the time....sometimes they would come straight in or go counterclockwise but it seems most time they came in in a clockwise direction. Anyone else ever noticed this?

Frank, in my experience coyotes will circle whichever way they can wind me the easiest. MOST of the time when a coyote circles it is to get your wind. If he is circling up wind he is usually bugging out so you had better try and stop him for the shot. Look at the terrain and see where the coyote is heading first. Sometime a coyote will opt for an elevated view of the stand rather than try and wind you especially if getting your wind requires him to break cover and cross open ground.

Yeah, I feel that a coyote has the ability to determine the shortest distance to get downwind, and almost invariably, will go that way. The exceptions are very few.
However, if it's dead calm, especially at night, I feel that a coyote is inclined to go counterclockwise as he circles in, perhaps HOPING that he will cross your scent. In other words, if he can't determine wind direction, and he declines to come straight in, then I think they move in a counterclockwise direction, more often than not.

Absolutely, counterclockwise. This is a principle of physics first decribed by Bernoulli. If you were to be calling coyotes south of the equator, they would circle cloc.... hold it. Uh, ...my mistake. I'm confusing coyotes with the water in the toilet when I flush. Actually, I don't think it matters with coyotes. Sorry for the interruption.

Over the years, I wish I would have paid more attention to the details. The question reminds me of another one about on which side, do most of the coyotes I shoot fall on most often,left or right. I hope to get that one figured first. ![[Roll Eyes]](rolleyes.gif)

Another one that will fool you, even when you think you have it figured out:
On a broadside shot on a coyote is he going to be laying with his feet facing you or his back?

I'm with Q,they will move to the down wind side,so I guess it all depends on which side of your position he is coming from and if you are calling with the wind in your face or on your back.I USUALLY call with the wind at my back so I don't get many back door coyotes coming in.GOOD HUNTING Chad.....

If there is no wind, available cover determines where they go, at least in the East.

I don't know, but most of my hunting is at night and, as I recall countless stands from memory, they mostly seem to be going clockwise into the stand. Honestly, I don't think it's my imagination.

Isn't it enough to worry about calling coyotes from "way far away" to "really close", without worrying oneself about whether the coyotes will circle clockwise or counterclockwise? I thgout calling coyotes was supposed to be easy!?!?!

Excellent job on the site makeover. Looks good!
On the topic, Barry and Jack nailed it for me. I hunt in the day most of the time. The terrain contour and cover (or lack of) can vary quite a bit. Most of the time they (the coyotes) use the terrain and cover mask their approach down wind. Early in the season the less than smart coyotes seem to be less picky about exposing themselves of course and will circle where you can see them. Like Greenside, I wish I would have paid attention. I can't recall.
