Okay, I'm sure somone's asked this question before...
What kinda' rifle do i need to coyote hunt?
Tax time is comming and I'm looking for a new rifle. Here's what I've been thinking about:
Rifle- Savage .223- Because ammo's cheap and have heard nothing but good things about this rifle and its pocket friendly value (SAVAGE 10FP LE1A 223REM 20" OR LE2A 26") [http://www.savagearms.com/centerfire/lawEnf/10fp.htm]
Scope- 4-10X44mm with adjustable objective
And whatever calls/stuff you can convince me that I need.
Other possible calibres: 22-250, .243, .308
I can really use your opinion!
Thanks Guys!

Well, you come to the wrong place, if you were expecting the board police to chastise you.
For typical California hunting, you can not go wrong with either the 223 or the 22-250, although you will find the second to be more versatile, although a little more expensive to shoot. Really, a personal consideration.
My 2 cents; I own one, but I don't use a 223 for predators.
Good hunting. LB

Neil,
I have hunted coyotes with everything from a 12 ga. to the new 17HMR and with good sucess. I own a Rem 700 VSF .223 and its a darn good gun but about 2 years ago I started playing around with the 20 cal stuff and I have found it to be very dependable. the 1st gun I had built was a 20T-N-T, its a 17rem case sized up to 20 cal and will run the 33 grain v-max at over 4000 fps and is deadly accurite. I then had built a Tact20, wich is a .223 case sized down to 20 cal and it pushes a Berger 36 grain to over 4100 fps and I'm not maxing it out, I reload and love to do it. If you are not into reloading then I agree with Leonard and would not shoot the .223 for coyotes. The 22-250 will cost a little more but you will not be spending alot of time wondering if you hit one or not.
As far as calls go, I have many and use them all as I like to swich them up all the time. I use Sceery's calls, Burnham bro's calls, and even e-callers, its realy up to the hunter.
Hope this helps and good luck.
Thats my 2 cents Neal

The 17 Rem sized up to 20 caliber, and the 223 sized down to 20 caliber are so close it takes a micrometer to tell the difference.
What was the logic for buying another set of dies, reamers, etc.?

Well Jack,
I had been shooting the 17rem for 10 years and had lots of brass to play with and started to build it first, ordered the reamer and go guage and was talking to Todd Kindler one day and Todd was tas tellin me about the new Tact-20 and how it would push a 36 grain bullet up to 4400 fps and my 20t-n-t would only push a 33 grain v-max to 4000,I kinda put the t-n-t on the back burner and got the Tact-20 up and running first. I had all the parts for the t-n-t sitting around when I bent the barrel on my Tact-20, I ordered a new barrel from Tim at Douglas barrels and he said 3 weeks. So I had my gunsmith finish the 20 t-n-t so I had something to shoot untill the new barrel for the tact-20 arived.
By the way there is a differance and you would have to shoot them to understand, I could try to explain it to you all day and you still would'nt understand unless you shot them.
FYI I like the small cal. stuff, I like to get to see the critters fold up in the scope.
Good huntin
