Well, I got a bug up my ass. After BassProShops, where they were virtually sold out, I went to a smaller local chain called Turner's, I think they are restricted to California? So, BassPro is waiting for micro stamping, and their counters were pretty well cleaned out. Turner's, on the other hand, had a fair size crowd, and although it's more like a Big 5, in size, they had at least 3 times as many handguns displayed.
Interestingly, only one Colt; some behemoth revolver about 2 feet long with a price tag of $3,500. Don't ask me what it was chambered, I couldn't have cared less?

So, pic a number and I had to wait probably 45 minutes? At BassPro, I started to pick a number but I was next and there were three guys willing to show me stuff. I don't know what's going on at that store?

I looked at everything but Glocks. There was this fat guy clerk, you know how they put some dink behind the counter and suddenly, he's a firearm expert? He told me that my 40S&W was a POS and the Glock 9mm was more powerful. You know, the +P+ loadings, if you can find them, I guess is what he meant? Well, I was all over that shit since I handload for my Shield and can bump performance substantially. There were at least a dozen people standing there when I told him he was full of shit, I can make my Shield crap all over a Glock 9mm. I'm sorry, Vic, I just can't warm up to the Glock. The big secret is the number of L.E. that happen to accidentally shoot themselves.

They have the lower shelf on one display case that has different guns that they won't even show you unless you are a cop. These are useful types, like as backups, or performance, or features that plain folk just don't need and aren't allowed to buy. L.E. can purchase these slick models, but I cannot. Yes, I have a huge attitude.

I made up my mind that I was done looking and was going to buy something, today. Well, that's not accurate, I mean I made an application and if I pass the investigation, I can pick it up ten days from now, after 5:02 P.M. And, if I fail to pick it up after 30 or 40 days, the sale is voided and I am fined 30% of the sale price.

Now, the six pages of paperwork and the stupid questions; did I ever think I was a danger to myself or others, etc.? I have to fill out the questionnaire and then it's printed. The guy asked me to very carefully review the document for errors. I did and he questioned me; "you studied and verified all 25 items for accuracy"? I said, yes I did; that I may be old, but I'm not senile. And, he said (twice) that that was the fastest verification he had ever witnessed, was I quite sure because at the very least, anything incorrect would delay the purchase or I could be held accountable for a false statement, bla bla bla... I told him (which is true) that I an a graduate of the Evelyn Woods Reading Dynamics so he can be quite confident, (as I was) that all those 25 factual statements were correct.

Yes, this is starting to get under my skin, right down to the part where they wouldn't give me the damned thing until after 5:02 P.M.

I have to prove that I am a resident of The People's Republik and that requires that I produce a utility bill, gas, elect, or water bill. Or since I don't carry those statements around in my back pocket, the optional thing is my vehicle registration. Now it really gets the bureaucratic gears spinning because my registration, (I had to go out and get it from the glove box) it had expired on the 3rd, and this was the 3rd. It just so happened that I sent to check Friday the 1st to get it postmarked so I wouldn't have to pay the late fee. So, the asshole said, this is no good, it's expired, it's invalid and if I was pulled over, I'd get beat up and arrested, or some shit. No, he didn't go that far but this guy was a real DRAMA QUEEN.

Unfortunately, I'm just between getting my sticker in the mail and I have never had a cop actually worry about it like this prick did. We are talking about a 350 pound blob, so I wasn't going to hit him in his smart mouth; these guys are able to just lay on ya and suffocate ya to death. I don't have a choice but to return with my utility bills to prove that I am indeed a resident of this fucked up state. Everything will still be processed in the meantime, so they didn't send me home to get them now, I can bring it when the 10 days have elapsed.

And, citizens in this crummy state are picking numbers and standing in line to buy "weapons" no matter how difficult they make the process. Things like a $25 card that says I know how to safely handle a gun, and for some reason, they expire after 5 years? Then there is a fee called DROS or something like that, that must be paid separate, on every purchase. I added it up and those chickenshit fees and tax came to $128 over the sale price.

This is what it's like here, and who know? Maybe your state will look at Kalifornia and think they can do the same thing. Be careful!

end of rant!

Good hunting. El Bee

PS what did I get?

No offense taken Leonard, there was a time I felt just like you, until I actually owned a few Glocks and used them….sometimes, you just don't know, what you don't know?
I haven't bought a "store bought" firearm in maybe 20 years?, any buys I make are online forums, we meet in a Walmart parking lot, shoot the shit, get finger prints on the firearm, dicker over price, make the deal and wave good bye.
Just traded for another Glock recently, 2nd generation G17, I had an extra older Dillon press he liked, met at Wally world, had nice visit and we each walked with what we wanted. I can't imagine the frustration you suffer there as well as fees and registrations etc., you need to finally pull the trigger and get out of that gawd forsaken state.

Thank you for reminding me, I knew there was something I needed to do!

And, I also know that my aversion to Glocks is mainly due to my contrary nature and not based on familiarity with the firearm. Come to think of it, I don't remember ever picking one up? How's that for closed mindedness?

This Parking Lot rendezvous is impossible in this state. Even if you suggested on, your odds of meeting a L.E. sting instead, are higher than exchanging child pornography.

Why did you think you needed a second gen Glock? I don't understand that kind of retro like buying Colt snake guns?

Good hunting. El Bee

edit: PS I've been meaning to ask you for a while now. How are your tortoises doing? My oldest baby that I gave to my daughter up north is doing great, his shell is developing the fork that shows him as a male and the interesting thing is that his shell is pristine, almost shiny, he hardly knows what dirt is, they let him crawl around on their bed with the cats and the Pug. He's about 8-9 inches in length of his upper shell. Now mine are worn smooth from crawling into the burrow, which is at least 6 foot long and curved and I can't see the end of it. It's in the side of a hill and they dug it themselves.

I bet they are. After I buy my first Toyota, maybe the Glock will be the next barrier to fall? But there’s only one that I’ve taken a shine to, Paul’s FJ Cruiser. I’d give it a try by now if I wasn’t so way overpriced.

Multiple Glocks?....well, there are full size Glocks, and small Glocks, and different calibers, so I can easily visualize a guy have several?
So what are the regulations of you toting a firearm home, say it was given to you by a relative or friend, but not "purchased", do you literally have to register firearms there? Forgive me, Im totally ignorant of California rules and regs.
Gave our tortoises to my brother. We had them here for a couple years, and although Florida has a native Gopher Tortoise, I think our western variety can't take the humidity? We went back to McNeal for two years in 2016 to sell place and took them back to Arizona, then gave to my brother in Tucson. They are thriving, even McNeal was out of their native habitat, causing them to stay way long in the den before coming out of hibernation, and going into hibernation way to early compared to their native Sonoran desert. He loves having them and has made quite the habitat area for them to wander around in and be in their home turf.

Handgun purchase Arizona style.
Went to Cabela's in Phoenix. Had a Ruger .380 LCP in mind.
Young lady behind the counter was pleasant, cute & very knowledgeable about handguns.
Decided to purchase the Ruger after drooling over it for a bit. Also, a 'battle pack' of ammo & a couple of boxes of 'personal defense' rounds.
Gave the young lady my Cabela's credit card, my concealed carry permit & I seem to remember something about a half page yes / no form.
She then disappears in the back for a few minutes and comes back out to inform me that I have enough 'Cabela's points' to cover the purchase.
Signed my name a couple of times & she walked me to the front door and handed me my new in the box handgun.
All in all, rather pleasant.

Just went thru the same thing last week. Bought a baby Glock and after all the bullshit you feel like your buying a new house or something. Jumping thru hoops and answering silly ass questions.

Im a Glock fan. I was raised on revolvers, and have had a couple 1911's here and there. I like the simplicity of a Glock and they shoot good to boot. We can only have Gen3's here too. I really like the enlarged magazine release on the Gen4+ but it is un-attainable for me. I will be putting an oversized controls kit in this one though...another 50 bucks.

We will have to do the same thing come July when we want to buy ammo.

Yeah, and the cocksuckers already cut off our access to mail order from out of state.

These Democrats in this state are taking over. Their way or the highway.

To answer your question, Vic. I don't know right now but I'm sure they are pointing in that direction, ALL TRANSFERS, LIKE WHEN I GAVE MY DAUGHTER THE LADy SMITH THAT BELONGED TO HER MOM. Same shit, ten day, pass background investigation, pay a $30 DROS fee and place the gun in custody of a recognized dealer, and I think he would get something for his trouble? So far, I don't think it's a law but there is absolutely no reason why it couldn't be because Democrats have a veto proof majority and can pass any restrictions and repressive regulations they want.

This is what will happen Federally after the 2020 election if we don't wake up. Like they say, Freedom is only one generation away from extinction.

Leonard, my friend,

If I managed a Cabelas or Bass Pro in The People's Republic of California, and knew I had to sell guns to customers of your experience, I would hire a Stormy Daniels look alike that liked to show off her double D's and I would have her sell you a gun. Then you wouldn't have to make it hard on a young fella who has to abide by stupid background checks that he prolly doesn't agree with either.

As Stormy was selling you a gun, you could talk to her chest and forget all about throwing a dead fish in your neighbor's car or pushing his ice shack into open water on the lake.

You do crack me up. Lol!

Well, well, well! Is Scott out on parole? Haven't heard from you in a coon's age! And, how's your lovely wife? Damn, you sure have a million dollar view off the back porch, I'm so envious! Not to mention the unique local flavor, where social activities revolve around that upscale 7 lane bowling alley right next to the livestock auction. Almost a time warp, People here in The Land Of The Fruits And The Nuts have no idea that places like Kadoka exist....did I spell that right?

Anyway, you could drop in "once in a while," which is a shorter timeframe than coon ages.

You know, I'm still offended by your laughing at my combat hush puppies!

Cabelas? Bass Pro? What are these places you speak of? I have "this guy"... his name is Rip. Honest to God. FFL. I don't buy a lot of guns, but on the rare occasion when I do, I just go to Rip. He hands me his catalogs and I pick the gun and price I like. We fill out the obligatory paperwork and he orders it and I pay him his wholesale cost plus $20. Last gun I bought was my Walthers PPX 9mm. If I recall, I think I got it for about 250-300 less than the stores were selling it for. If Rip isn't home, I have another guy named Sam, my gun plumber. He offers the same deal - wholesale plus 20. Must be a local thing. Hell, Sam pillared a Howa I had - two machined pillars - for $35, total. Had him put a 2-stage trigger in my machine gun and replace the pistol grip with a more ergonomic one. Charged me his cost for the parts and, for labor, I traded him 3 Ghurka Beast cigars. Had 4, but smoked one and it kicked my ass. LOL He loved them. Says he still owes me some labor on that trade.

Leonard, you might want to consider moving to Kentucky. They just passed a law that says you no longer have to have a concealed deadly weapons license to carry a deadly weapon. A deadly weapon is not just a hand gun in KY.

The state defines a "deadly weapon" as:
(a) A weapon of mass destruction;
(b) Any weapon from which a shot, readily capable of producing death or other serious physical injury, may be discharged;
(c) Any knife other than an ordinary pocket knife or hunting knife;
(d) Billy, nightstick, or club;
(e) Blackjack or slapjack;
(f) Nunchaku karate sticks;
(g) Shuriken or death star; or
(h) Artificial knuckles made from metal, plastic, or other similar hard material;

So you are pretty much good to go in this state. It takes about 15 minutes to buy a gun.

Last gun I bought was 22-250 from a local gun store. Took all of 10 mins to fill out the paper work and for the counter guy to box my rifle up. Handed cash over and off I went. Easy here in Texas.

Oh yeah, you guys are a big help, keeping me informed about how swell your state handles firearm transactions. Real big help! Kentucky? Never been there, but the folks I talked to when I was in Cincinnati definitely, and strenuously told me: do not go there! One of my wife's old girlfriend's had moved there and bought a house for 30% of what she sold her house for in California. So....I didn't risk it. [Smile] Just kidding.

This bureaucratic bullshit; forget ten minute transactions, I'm still 7 days and 5 hours short of taking possession of my 100 year old design. (hint hint)

But, all you guys pay attention to the bully tactics in The People's Republic. Take a look at Minnesota, where I was born and the freak they send to congress? That's what gerrymandering will do for you. It's how I lost my Republican congressman here until just a few years ago, and this is a solid conservative area just like Orange County and it happened there, as well. These Democrat assholes will do every dirty trick in the book, so "watch your six."

1911 nice but too heavy for EDC.

Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on March 07, 2019, 07:13 AM:

Paul, don't be contrary. There are negatives with every choice. I suppose your Glock is just about perfect? I've had my Combat Commander since about 1970/71 and never had an accidental discharge, cocked and locked. I assume you have not shot yourself in the leg, yet?

I don't know? Yes, a 1911 is heavy, presents challenges when concealed carry is contemplated. That's why I subscribe to the bag of golf clubs solution. A #4 Wood is not a very good putter, so it's nice to have a choice.

You just can't talk to these Glock people! I will make out, some how, some way. Imagine Victor, used to be fairly competent with a .357, all tricked out. Now he's collecting obscure 2nd generation plastic Glocks because (Golly) there are so many different calibers and big ones and little ones and so on. I'm not poking fun, he knows his shit, I'm sure of that.

Were the Peanut Gallery to take up a collection and buy me a Glock, (dream on) I would NOT carry it, probably not even fire it, I am so pig headed! So there!

Don't know how you managed to pigeonhole me as a "collector" of Glocks? I like their function, utility, availability and mostly their cheap price. The few I have, I got for around $300-$350, no tax, no paper work, no fees and no waiting, how can ya beat that?

As to my old competition revolver, funny you mention that piece. I had sold that to a fellow competitor and gun store owner maybe 10 years ago? Last Dec when I was out there I dropped by to see him. He's out of the business now, but I had figured he had peddled that revolver long ago. We shot the shit a spell, and I had to ask if he happened to know who he sold it to, or if by chance he still had it in his personal stuff.

Said he had it still and had only shot it a total of 12 shots, just to see how accurate it was. Asked him what he'd take for it, he said whatever I gave you for it. It's now back in my safe, and I have actually shot it in two local matches here. It's a bit of a dinosaur, old technology red dot sight, and much heavier than current competition revolvers are now. I picked it up new as a Frank Glenn custom build back in 1990, and would imagine I ran a couple hundred thousand rounds thru it, it's a bit loose in lock up and I had to stretch the crane to take up the cylinder end shake issue, but the sonofabitch still shoots pretty damned good.....only wish the shooter could.

Leonard, I have a plan for you. Sell that mansion of yours and move to Kansas. Little place right north of Fort Riley - home of the 1st Infantry Division, the vaunted Big Red One. Nestled between Tuttle Creek Reservoir and Milford Lake, the largest lakes in Kansas, in the beautiful Flint Hills, is a little berg of about 150 homes, aptly names - ready for this?- Leonardville, Kansas! You wouldn't even have to change the name. Buy the whole damned town. That country is ass deep in coyotes and you'd be within 20 minutes of Irwin Army Hospital for all the pro bono healthcare you can stand. In the fall, you have K-State football, and K-State basketball in the winter. We're fixing to win the Big XII Saturday, then off to the "big dance".

If you find yourself lonesome for liberals, you can drive an hour and a half east to Lawrence and hang out with those candy-asses at KU. They're all queer as a 3-dollar bill, but then again,... they're liberals.

You could kill 200+ coyotes up there in a season and barely put a dent in them. Global warming concern? Hell, the tornadoes hardly ever damned near kill you only once in a while. Some of the most beautiful country in Kansas, and everyone votes red.

Think about it...

OK I’m thinking. I know I have options. I could even move to the Florida panhandle and bother Victor, pidgeonhole him. I pick on him mercilessly, he thinks!

One thing, as far as Carlson, he’s a trader witness his latest transaction. I don’t sell guns. I mean, I have but not many. I buy rarely and keep them forever. Not a big trader like him. I don’t get it? Never satisfied? Or what? Now he will think I’m picking on him again. He’s a sensitive rascal, I need to be careful, don’t want to hurt his feelings!

So you sold the place in Mc Neal?

This is the new place Leonard, right next door to the old home place. Was tough at first to walk out door and see the old place and how the new owner was changing shit and not taking care of it like it had been, but Im over it now, new chapter, new place. Having fun fixing the new place, and it makes a great hunting camp for dove season and winter coyote hunting.

I need to be careful! I'm always doing something to one of my favorite people and yet he thinks I'm pigeon-holing him as a "collector" of Glocks? I could sense the fear. Yet, he did say: "full size Glocks, and small Glocks, and different calibers#

I don't own more than one of anything, even 2 would make me a collector. The 49er has 2 10mm Glocks! In comparison, I am such an amateur.

Glock people are sensitive. I bet he won't like to be called "Glock People"

I will say this. You were fortunate in getting that revolver back. You know, I sell very few guns and regret every one. I sold my 11-47 Remington to the other Victor. He keeps saying he will sell it back, but it hasn't happened. He's all talk! Of course, what do I need it for? Just a neat gun, I guess?

I guess I'd buy a Glock for $300, but I have not run across a deal like that. Everywhere I go, they seem to be closer to $550?

I will, for sure, use Victor as my negotiator. I have "full retail' stamped across my forehead.

Good hunting. El Bee

edit: thanks for the pic! Looks like one of those I Pod containers, at first glance. I think I know what you mean, as far as selling a place and then wanting to guide the owner towards what's right. So, did you have to dig a well? This is that piece of bare ground that is just south and adjacent to the original homestead. Right?

I don't see the power lines?

It's all PBR metal panels on the outside, except the front, under the covered porch, I used T-111 and painted, turned out good. It is on the 5 acres that was on west side of old place, I ran a water line from old place to tiny house before I sold it, and have somewhat of an agreement from new owner for water....I see that changing soon.

Leonard, you wouldn't believe the long road of how I got as far as I have on the tiny house project. It all started as a desire to have a little place to come back "home" couple times a year. I was going to opt for "off the grid" plan; solar, maybe a miniature septic system etc. Then I realized cost/benefit of solar, batteries, panels all the stuff that goes with it, I'd just go conventional power from SSVEC, our local co-op. Well, to even get them to come take a look and "engineer" a plan....which is one 110' span from the neighbors transformer pole to my place, I first had to have a county address. I went to county, thinking I just get an address? a county address is $15, but to have the address you have to have a building permit. I threw some bull shit that I just had a concrete slab and twice a year pulled a trailer on and just wanted electric so I wouldn't have to run a generator. Was told one can only park a trailer for two days, or I would be labeled a "squatter", I advised it was my property free and clear and was told it does not matter to the county and I could be cited.
There it all began, at the end of two hours I walked out with my county address to screw on a gate post, an owner builder opt out permit, that precludes one from having any inspections done, a septic permit, and another permit to construct a road into my own gawd damned property, all that and I was a bit over a thousand dollars lighter.

Another $450 for septic guy to come out and dig 3 12' deep hole to complete a percolation test, then I could finally get power to come out, set a drop pole and string one span of wire which cost me $2600.00. So Im all legal now, except the septic system. With the owner builder opt out permit, I have 3 years to complete the septic system, which I was quoted by the fella who did the perc test he would charge $4800.00 complete.

It is three rooms, Livingroom/kitchen , middle room that was going to house a toilet, but I decided to just use it as a pantry/storage, then a bedroom, very cozy and seems spacious compared ot actual size. I have ceiling that I put in using 1X6 shiplap lumber, the front of building is 12' and slopes to the back and is 10' in height, the high ceiling gives the feel of being "roomy". The actual dimensions of building interior is 12'X25'. Come next winter I'll have you down, I have a big futon in living room that is very comfortable, and just finished building a stand alone bathroom behind main house that's 7'X16', tub/shower, toilet, vanity/sink, all the comforts of home.

I think I understand the issues, Vic. That's really rich, two days parking! But, you got something going for you, now.

I'm trying to vision 12X25'. That's cozy. At least you can build on a little at a time. Hey, with a 10' ceiling you can add a loft easy enough.

I'll hold you to the invite! I'd love to see it! Damn! Sold the old homestead out from under me! I was about to make you an offer you couldn't refuse.

edit: you know, my old partner, Pat.His mom was a very talented artist. I have several of her oil paintings around the house. She had a little 10X10 shack up a dirt road out in Barstow and it was so quiet and peaceful and she would paint. That's the way to get away from it all, with no distractions.

Looks and sounds like a nice place Victor ! I got lucky when I built my place , I had a good guy inspector he said mine was the best build he had seen in Ash Fork we were walking the property and he came around a corner and stopped and said I did not see that solar equip. I laughed and said you could not possibly have seen it ,it wont be here till next week . He told my to apply for a permanent gen set I did he approved the project and signed off. He said if I wanted a solar permit it was a nightmare engineered drawings et al. scaled plot of the property and a whole lot of nonsense! Coconino county is centered in Flagstaff a college town making it the bullshit capital of the world. Good luck and continued success with your project !

Yes, that's the cool part. Along with my solar, I have about 4 pounds of drawings and charts and blueprints, with an official stamp in the corner of each one.

I'm sure I mentioned that I got a final settlement from SoCal Edison. In the form of a check for $78. I already spent it.

Near as I can tell, by July, it will be two years even though they took their sweet time getting it online. I am disappointed in the energy savings. In fact, I don't see savings. If there are, I'd have to see the exact figures to compare but it looks like same old same old. In other words, These assholes are helping themselves to my Visa Card and I do not like it. It's about the same as when Edison sent me a bill and I paid it when due, a much more civilized arrangement.

Then there is the reappraisal of my property. They think those solar panels enhance my property value to the tune of about $400 per year. I consider the whole thing a monumental waste of time.

As Strother Martin so aptly put it: "What we have here is a failure to communicate.

Most likely, I wasn't paying attention when they were talking about certain things. Like cost/benefit ratio. Or something?

Another thing. It might have been shortly after they gave me the final ok to flip the switch outside and actually turn it on that I had another technician here to hook up TV and Internet when I switched from Dish to Spectrum. I did not find out that a certain cable connected to an antenna was reporting my solar operation to some satellite somewhere. So, for the past year, they have been estimating my electrical usage via something other than actual data. What the fuck is that? So, now the thing is reporting accurately and the first question that came into my mind was, how do I recover the money I paid based on their fairy tale billing?

I guess it was somewhat my own damned fault because they had been sending me email all the time asking for an appointment for a tech to come out and check the system, which I ignored. This time, the guy just showed up, ambush style. I almost didn't let him in. Yup, I have a huge hard on for these guys. But, we will see if this next year I start seeing some actual savings; because, as I said, so far I have been paying Vivent Solar the same as I was paying Edison.

Now back to the ridiculous ten day waiting period in California. It's ten days tomorrow at 5:02 P.M.

As billed, this "ten days" perform a valuable function. What function? I heard it's a cooling off period. If I wanted to shoot up a school, it gives me 10 days to come to my senses. However, what the hell good is it when they know I already have a S&W Shield 40. In other words, Maybe there is a valid reason when somebody doesn't already own a firearm but after that, it's just fucking with ya, because they can.

Update:

I was there yesterday, all bright eyed and bushy tailed. Took a number, and listened to all the bullshit at the counter. Like a bunch of old ladies. And, Fat Boy was there, He almost caught me snapping his picture! He was telling this black guy same shit, 9mm is better! Where does he get this shit? Anything you can do with 9mm you can do better with the 40 S&W, and the black guy made up his mind in a hurry, next thing you know, he was writing it up. Don't know why it pisses me off so bad, but it does!

Anyway, I stood around for about an HOUR when it suddenly dawned on me! I didn't bring my documentation! They wouldn't take my registration because it expired the day before. Well, I haven't got the tag yet so I had to come back home any get a couple utility bills.

Then, I got back as quick as I could and dammit! They had closed! I couldn't believe it! They closed at 7! I rattled the door and chubby chick talked to me through the crack in the door. Then I read the store hours, dammit! Nothing personal, they didn't close the door in my face, it's just closing time. Never occurred to me it would be so early, butthat's life.

So, I'm heading down there right now.

Here's another HATE! Man, I don't know what it is, but I'm the same way, Turner's drives me nuts!

But, okay. VICTOR, VICTOR VICTOR! I have questions. You have very similar gun, right? Did you get a manual with it? This thing they call the safety stop on hammer? They say a flat, shelf-like surface. Is this what I might call "half cock" with a confusing name?

But, main thing is the Integral Locking System. I'd like to know what the hell is so important about removing the mainspring housing with "ILS"? They provide a little piece of bent wire to stick in the slot and placing the mainspring housing in a vice. Why? I can't think of a reason why I would want to deactivate the mainspring. Is this for some type of shooting activity that is beyond the scope of my endeavors?

I'm not understanding this feature? What do you think? They describe it as being under extreme pressure. I've never been tempted to deactivate the grip safety, and I have owned a couple 45's, one plain vanilla government issue and the other my Combat Commander.

Again, what do you think?

Most 1911 platforms all come with flat mainspring housings now, that did not used to be the case, they mostly came with arched housings. Most action pistol shooters removed the arched and replaced with a flat one. Guessing about the only reason a guy might want to remove the housings now, would be to fit in one that had an integral enlarged magazine well?
Your pistol most likely has a beveled magazine well, but one usual modification for some shooters is to add the larger magazine well to facilitate a bit quicker reload.
Every one I have ever removed a mainspring housing one had a dimpled pin located at butt end you just punch out and remove housing, it is of course under spring tension, but Ive never used a vise to hold it? Don't know what that is all about?

Yeah, I think that feature is over my head and I will never screw with it although they provide a little bent pin to insert in the hole, yeah, I don't want to lose that beauty, might come in handy some day.

The trigger is very nice! I doubt I will ever need to screw with it, either? All in all, this gun is more sophisticated than me. Very nice and It looks every bit comparable to a Kimber or a few of the others that might be considered a niche in the premium market. Hate to say it, but it's finer than my Colt. I bought this Combat Commander in about 1970-71 or so. I am pretty sure I paid $114, in January of that year and was pissed that the price had jumped from $107 before the first of the year. I hate to mention what inflation has done to the firearm market in the last 49 years, but think X 10.

I got to looking around and can't find anything but FMJ on the shelf? Found one box of Remington Golden Saber HPJ. I must have an ammo can around here somewhere with better bullets but for now, these will do, they are 185 gr. I used to handload when I had enough empties to justify, which I thought 700-1000 was adequate or worthwhile. I used to buy the 200 gr. Sierra (truncated), forget what it was called but it seemed to work well enough. Anyway, I have to see if I have enough empties to justify but in the manual that came with this gun it says "reloads" will void the warranty. That's what they think of handloaders, I guess? No caution, peddle to the metal.

But, another thing, this gun has so many features that are different from any 1911 Government Model I ever messed with. It just "looks" like a 45, but take down and everything else is very different. Yet, it does feel good compared to the two most recent purchases like the Shield and the XD striker fired polymer etc.

I'm in no particular hurry to get to the range, but the creek is probably down enough to get across right now. Fat chance they will ever build a bridge, considering that mid summer there's no water, at all. I'll get around to it.

Oh, another thing. This gun came with the nicest carrying case I have ever seen. It's not hermetically sealed, no gasket, but it's rugged and would survive a hell of a drop.

I just had a thought. And, this is no bullshit. When I went back to Germany in 1961, from LAX, a 30 day leave, I had my 45 stuck in my pants, typical Mexican carry. I shit you not! Try that little stunt today and see how far you get.

But, you could look it up. The previous year, a father and son, (I think?) tried to hijack a plane in El Paso and the FBI was running along side the takeoff with Thompson machine guns shooting out the tires. Again, I bet you could look it up. Wasn't long after that that I was leaving El Paso International, ultimate destination, Cuba, armed right there in the cabin. Hard to believe, but that's what happened and at the time, I didn't know we had the whole friggin' "Guatemalan" Air force stationed at Hurlbert Field, all WWII vintage B25's, P47's and others. I was in them, definitely some cool shit! Considering what was going on then, what the CIA might be doing now a days, is interesting to think about.

And, don't ask. I'm already looking at jail I mean Leavenworth, but they'll never take me alive! ha ha Maybe Lance could visit with a cake baked with files in it? None of this could be true. Hmm? I should google the Guatemalan Airforce, it probably never existed?

The adjustment you find on your trigger Leonard only affects over travel, has nothing to do with reducing weight of pull, most likely is adjusted correct as it comes from factory I would think? Ive never pissed with mine, as it seems not to have much or any over travel after the break.
I agree with you, the Springfield Armory pistol is a much better product than the Colts Ive owned. Im not partial to Kimber, never liked their smooth melted over all look, way over rated to my mind, to each their own?
I have the TRP model, a bit pricier than your model, but comes with just a few more extras that I would add anyway, plus I got mine at one of my Walmart parking lot deals, so I payed much less than off the shelf price, which runs a tad over $1300.
Ive shot my reloads in mine and it was very accurate, a 200 grain lead SWC, but for social purposes, it has a magazine of 230 grain hardball stuffed in it. Im sure your going to be happy with function and accuracy.

Well, I guess that's why there is no mention of weight of pull in the so called owner's manual? And, did you say that your's is bigger than mine?

I checked the weight of pull and it's just under 5 pounds, call it 4.75. That seems reasonable, not that I could do anything about it. if you are right about the over travel adjustment, as far as that goes, I'm not inclined to change it since it's as close to zero as I can determine? The ergonomics are quite acceptable, the gun fits.

They have an online registration which I took advantage of because they have a few products available at discount, like pouches, holsters and magazines. There is a double stack 10 round mag available but I'm not sure if it is compatible? I'll have to inquire about that.

No; our two pistols are the same in frame size and general appearance. Mine has several up grade features your model doesn't have I believe. Mine has the extended magazine well, front strap checkering, match grade barrel, which I think yours has too?, national match slide and frame, front cocking serrations on slide, and hand fitted parts.
Yours comes with adjustable sights, mine is three dot tritium fixed combat type sights.

Yes, I wish I had the checkering on the front trigger guard as I’m kind of used to it but, it’s not that big a deal. I guess? But the sights are really nice. I bet it shoots lights out!

The more I look at it, the more I appreciate the workmanship. You can’t really absorb and evaluate something like this with some goon breathing down your neck, but playing with it the past couple days, I had no idea that Springfield Armory was turning out this kind of quality.

For what it's worth, the Integral Locking System (ILS) was another attempt to appease the bureaucrats in Washington. Safety they said. Lots of people ditch the ILS because they say it "might" lock up the gun accidentally, it affects trigger pull ever so slightly, makes disassembly harder, etc. I had a TRP with it and never bothered changing it because it was a range gun and I never carried it. BUT if I were to carry an ILS equipped 1911 I would definitely get rid of that system. One less thing to potentially go wrong.

Go to Brownells.com and search for 1911 main spring housing. You'll need a new spring and plunger also. Lots of options to choose from. Go to youtube and there are lots of videos on how to change the housing. Brownells has videos too. Its pretty easy and only takes a few minutes.

As far as being legal, it is in Kentucky but I have no experience with your state.

Okay, thanks.

I'm wondering what happens to the "key way"? When you remove the spring and the inserted parts, that little two dot window. I didn't see it as discarded or is it still in place but doesn't affect anything by operating it?

Maybe I missed something? Is the operator still in place but it doesn't lock anything after the modification?

Replace the main spring housing and you no longer have a key way. That link AZ posted shows exactly what to do.

Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on March 22, 2019, 08:22 AM:

The whole thing? I thought the spring and the inserts top and bottom but I didn't understand that the whole back part is replaced. If so, that would explain why the hole is gone.

I'm sure it will become clear when the parts arrive, whenever, if I do it. But I am not sure about 19 pound springs and filing parts that might hang up on the grip safety.

However, I'm not sure it's something to worry about except on principle, and don't worry, I get that part.

Besides, if the whole concept is to keep some toddler from blowing his head off after finding my cannon under the bed, they went to a lot of trouble for nothing because I'm fresh out of rug rats and have been for quite a while.

Now, somebody explain to me why anybody would want this same 1911 Springfield, big heavy classic, and get it in 9mm? What the hell is the attraction there? Just so it's compatible with NATO? ha ha

I could see maybe 40S&W, but a puny 9mm, which I have little use for, but what the hell, I bought one just to see what all the fuss was about. It's pleasant enough to shoot, but so is my Browning Camper.

Please give me a good logical reason, like owning a matched set, or something? How about it? You want a 9mm, get a fucking Glock! Duh!

Leonard, just a word of advice as a friend...those 185 grain Golden Sabres are loaded on the hot side. I shot them in a 1911 a few years back and the recoil caused the slide stop to break. You might want to get a heavier recoil spring if you are going to use them. Wolff Gunsprings has a 20 or 22 pound spring and they are inexpensive.

Food for thought;
Remove an unneeded safety feature and at some time in the future the weapon ends up in the hands of some clod who leaves it where a kid can find it and shoot himself.
The lawyers would be lining up to sue your ass. Even more so in Calif.

You also might want to check that it's even legal to remove a safety device in Calif.

edit: you know, since the Mexican government is always worried about a rebellion, they have guns in Mexico but a bunch of rules restricting any and everything that has a military ring to it, no military cartridges allowed and that's why they like 1911's but they are all chambered in 38Super. No 308's or 30'06's or 5.56Nato. Just a casual survey indicates to me that the 270Winchester is probably the most popular rifle cartridge in Mexico., That or 25/35, or some obscure 348Winchester, just so long as it's not a scary "military" cartridge. They are way overdo for a second revolution, them bastards!

Speaking of stolen guns, my BIL had a 30-30 Winchester stolen out of his truck. He reported it. Two years later it was recovered in a bank robbery in Texas.

Yes, it happens. I have had four guns stolen, only one recovered, thus far.
