Vic,
Wondering if you’re still shooting the .19 calibers? If so how do you like the Calhoon Double Hollowpoints on Coyotes. I’m seriously considering a rebarrel in .19-223.....

No Chad; I'm out of the .19 game, although I kind of wish I had kept the .19 Badger, that was my favorite I think. Although I never tried the .19-.223, but a pardner had one.
At the time I was using the two I had, Calhoon was the only game in town, so all I used were the double HPs he had....great bullet, I killed a lot of coyotes and cats with them. When using the .19 Calhoon, a hornet necked down to .19, I once shot a big tom, from about 12 yards facing me, right at the throat below the chin...bullet never exited, surprised the hell out of me. Also shot a gray fox broadside from about the same distance with no exit.

Thanks for the feedback Vic...I appreciate it... I still haven’t decided if that’s the route I want to go but no doubt about it all Three of those Cartridges are intriguing.

Ok............Just out of curiosity;
How extreme can you guys go necking cartridges down ???
30-06 to .22 ??
.458 Win Mag to .22 ??
Is there a limit to the brass or the powder burn / barrel length ????
It all seems like voodoo to me, but to quote Thor "In my world science and magic are the same thing."

There is a relationship between case volume and powder burn rate. Things have changed since black powder.

At one time, I think Weatherby developed the 220 Rocket? Insane case capacity, but it lacked suitable powders. Therefore, no real advantage over something a little more modest, like a 22-250.

That's something I ponder. What is the actual advantage of a Redline over a 22-243? It will probably require 15-20 more, (additional) grains of a very slow burning powder? And, if he gets 300fps from a much heavier bullet, then is the purpose fulfilled banging steel? I have always been skeptical of VLD bullets for hunting, they tend to zip through a coyote size animal, and then you have a runner.

So, I don't know? I tend to think a 22-243 is a "practical" limit for normal coyote hunting, if you limit your shots to reasonable distances, which for me is about 400 yards if I have a perfect target. Otherwise, I am better served making another stand, and not wasting the time. I have left coyotes a few times that I couldn't find. I think that's a total waste. An animal has to be stationary and confident and standing close to some marker, a tree, a rock, etc. Too many times, it's endless sagebrush and all you have to go by is the LINE. You could be off by hundreds of yards, one way or the other.

Then, too is the fact that there are other cartridges. I used to have a man in the club that used a 300Win Mag. He claimed some impressive long range shots, if you can handle the recoil?

Actually, for most of us, a 22-250 to a 220Swift is all the cartridge we will ever need....for normal coyote hunting. As I said, I used a Swift for 15 years and never felt the need for more velocity. My 22-250 Ackley is a lot better and the practical thing is more reloads and a narrower midrange trajectory, helping in bullet placement. I still think it is more than adequate, with a long barrel, but that has to factor into the equation as well, then you need to pick a slightly faster powder in a slightly shorter barrel. I haven't got to the suppresser factor yet, but screwing an 8" can on a 26" barrel is a little awkward, so I can see why somebody would go more case capacty and then shorten the barrel. This shit can make your head spin.

Now that you are thoroughly confused,

Confused, amused & convinced that we're all insane.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I want to go and try changing my arrows forward of center balance point from 11.25 % to 11.50 % to see if the flight improves.

Don't screw with success that's why I still choose 22-250 with my own loads of course. KOKO you are too funny my arrows come from the shop and still Kill shit !LOL

With archery doing your part has a whole new meaning !

You can buy store bought arrows ????? [Eek!] Who would'a thunk it ???

If you think that 'doing your part' applies to compounds, try shooting a recurve. [Smile]
When I hunt, anywhere thru both lungs is good, but I also shoot tournaments for competition and camaraderie and that standard won't win too many dust collectors.
Got a shoot this Sunday in Globe and the big one in Simi Valley in May. [Cool]

What part of May? You owe me a visit.
But I might be in Colorado around the 26th?

Good hunting. El Bee

PS I won a Club Med archery tournament several years ago. I think I might be fair to meddling' if I were to take it up.

It'll be the first part of May.
We'll figure something out as the dates firm up and avoid the fiasco of last year.

Damn Victor! You should have offered that Calhoon to me? I thought it was a very cool piece.

One thing I know about you, you are a confirmed trader. I don't know anybody that buys and sells firearms like you do?

Koko-puff...
"Practicality" is boring, and wildcatters are really only limited by their imagination!

Koko-puff ??????.................Uh, No !!!

Practical and personal enjoyment are two entirely different things. [Cool]
Personal enjoyment and fanatical obsession may or may not be two different things.........but probably aren't. [Eek!]
