Does anyone know about Herb's Howlers? This seems to be an old call but I can't find any date. It is signed by Herb. The call is cow horn with a plastic toneboard and a carefully fitted protective cover.

I don't know anything usefull. I do remember that Herb's were the first howlers I ever saw, and were my first exposure to using howling on stand. That was probably getting close to 20 years ago now. I wrote a letter to Mr. Brusman about howling, and his howlers, and he was kind enough to write back answering all my questions (hand written letters, pre-computer days). Can't remember what he was charging for his howlers at the time, only that it was more than I could scrape together. So, much as I wanted one, I never did get a Herb's Howler. I did buy a set of shooting sticks from him though - the first shooting sticks I ever owned. I liked his, because he made them long to accomodate shooting over sage brush. I put them to extremely effective good use and it got me habituated to using sticks, which I still do to this day (Verne Howey's, now). Think I probably still have those sticks from Herb, somewhere.
Anyway... I'm no help, I know. Your post just brought back some fond memories for me, is all.

My first cow horn howler was a herbs howler. It came with a video which I still have around here somewhere. My Herbs howler appeared to be fitted with an Olt D-2 duck call voice. I remember reading that Herb was buying the innards of same type of call which was made by Lohman. The Herb's howlers were being made by his son a few years ago, but I haven't seen anything about them for awhile. My old Herb's howler is still around here somewhere, and I betcha it would still call coyotes if I can find it.

I do, he worked as a government trapper. He made the mouthpiece out of old modified d-2 olt duck call. Thanks of course from "The Bible" by Uncle Jay Nistetter and Al Lux. Gotta love them boys! Interested in selling it?

I saw my first Herbs Howler about 15 years ago. I wanted one, but never did buy one. I think Herb Brusman lives in Idaho now?? I also think I remember hearing where his son now makes the howlers?? Herb still writes an occasional article in the VHA magazine. There was an article by Herb in the latest issue and it was about howling.

A Herb's Howler was the first (actual) howler I ever owned. Forgetting items like a Red Desert, and such.
My partner gave it to me, and I know he had a few conversations with Herb, on the phone. I seem to think he was featured in a mag. at the time, and don't know how Pat contacted him? For some reason, Oregon comes to mind? I still have it, though.
I do not recall it being signed, but maybe it is, never noticed? Had a piece of green garden hose over the reed, strictly utilitarian howler, wouldn't win any beauty prize. Sound is decent, I will grant you that. I'm thinking it must be at least twenty years old?

I remember seeing the Herb Howler in the late 80's and really considered getting it but kind of the same thing a DAA alittle to spendy at the time if I recall.Ended up getting a wooden Lohman howler because it was cheaper.LOL I Used that one for a couple years until I scraped up enough money to buy the Sceery howler.Like Dave send "fond memories".Good Hunting Chad

According to Uncle Jay's official Predator calls book, the first Herb's howler was introduced in 1985. Collector interest is listed as High.

I meet Herb Brusman in the late eighties, I believe he was still in Oregon at the time. purchased my first howler from him then. He and Gerd Jost were attending the Washington state trappers rendezvous, Herd demoed and discussed coyote howls and Gerd Jost discussed howling for wolves. With the howler came a small booklet called New Calling Technigues for Coyotes and Wolves by Gerd Jost. Know here is my dilema last year in the dark I was unloading the truck from a day calling and drop and stepped on my Herbs Howler ( DAM IT ) Here is the info for his son who is making the calls know.

Herb of Herb's Howlers is still around. He is a good friend of mine and we hunt together now and then. Herb is currently living in Caldwell, Idaho but is moving back to John Day, Oregon about the 22nd of this month.
Herb retired and sold his howler business to his son Chris several years back. Chris was making the howlers on a special order business as he was a full time logger at the time and didn't have time to get the howler business running full time. I'm sorry to say that Chris was killed about two years ago. His wife Bobbie, started up the howler business and is going at it full time, as well as making the shooting sticks that some of you mentioned here. The shooting sticks have been improved greatly to say the least from the old ones that Herb used to make.
Bobbie is currently trying to get her website up and running and I heard from her today and she tells me that it should be on the internet this coming Monday, April 15th. The website address will be: www.herbshowlers.com
I was visiting Bobbie with Herb last month and saw the howlers that she continued making and the shooting sticks. They are really nice looking and when her website is up and running I am going to buy a set of the sticks. I already have one of Herb's howlers, but I want a set of the shooting sticks.
I hope this helps out anyone that still has an interest in the howlers and shooting sticks. If you are, watch the internet for the website. Best to everyone out there.

Please extend our regards to Herb for us. I've got one of his original howlers. It's a nice unit, but has been put on the `collector` shelf. Herb was one of the ground-breaking pioneers back in the day.

Son of a gun...glad to hear this! I have a pair of the old sticks somewhere, and I have Herbs video too. Its vhs, which was recently copied to dvd for me by a bud. I hope the new endeavor goes well.
