This was my season in a nutshell. I'd like to see some pictures of how the hunting season went for everyone, doesn't have to be strictly hunting though. If you went fishing instead, post a pic!

I'm impressed !!!!
I took a fairly laid back approach with predictable results.
High point of the season was getting my picture in Traditional Bowhunter.

That is a cool end of season picture. A lot of work hangin right there.
I had another great season. I started off with a bang and ended with a bang.
First stand of the season I called in and killed 6. I called in and killed the first five and for whatever reason I quit calling. Rifle was empty and in my mind I guess I figured 5 was all of em. As I was dragging the nearest two back to the caller, another one started howling real close and so as soon as I got back to my rifle and caller, I put a shell in and started calling and #6 came rolling right on in.
 -
The I got a new property this winter and my first day of hunting it I set a new single day record for myself. Did 13 stands and killed 13 coyotes including a quad and a triple. 9 of them got a ride home, 4 had mange.
 -
Then my last solo stand of the year I howled in and killed another quad.
 -
I was able to sell 69 of the 95 coyotes that I killed this year. One of these years I'm going to extend my season a bit and kill 100, just to say I did.

Well done.

The coyote numbers in all of your hunting locales is just amazing.

Always amazed me to see Quinton's tally for the year, several years he broke 200. Year in year out, I usually average between 50 to 75 coyotes, and have broke the 100 mark a few times. Can only speak for myself, but when pushing to break 100, it sure seems to become more like work and less like just a good time out calling.
Here in southern Arizona, the only local guy I know that knocks down high numbers is Brent, He consistently calls and kills way the other side of 100 coyotes, and no telling how many he traps on various control jobs?
Aaron has a damned pretty photo there. That represents a lot of hard work putting that fur up, nice job!

Thanks for the kind words guys, much appreciated. I figured I better post something, I've lurked and gleaned plenty of good info off of this site over the years.

TRnCO, that's one hell of a stand! Putting down 13 in a day is also something few callers will ever achieve. Nice work! How do you like that call?

Az-Hunter, I definitely agree with you on putting up numbers feels like a job. I plan on trying for the 100 mark this coming season, closest I've come is 60 something so I'm gonna have to step it up a notch. Does this Quinton fella put up his fur?

I guess if I wanted to break 100 all I'd have to do is hunt by myself more. This past season I shared stands with 14 different people. Some for only a few stands, many just for a day. But when you're sharing stands it's obvious someone else is there to shoot coyotes too. I forget the number but others tallied about 40 coyotes on shared stands with me.
Aaron, it took a while for me to get used to the new call, especially the remote. Made one small change on it which really helped but the next unit that will be coming out by this coming fall is going to be an upgrade, in several ways. The sounds are outstanding, that's for sure.
Surely some others have some good photos to share, ...clear throat..., DAA [Wink]

TR, I wasn't able to get out much this year. And didn't take many pictures when I did. And the pictures I did take, are nothing special.

That picture of Aaron's is really neat! And you just plain tore it up on the multiples this year. I'm jealous [Smile] .

Here's a few anyway though, like I said, nothing special.

Think this was the first day out.

 -

Having fun learning to use the shotgun, this made two stands in a row shotgunning pairs. Kinda set the hook in me.

 -

Biggest one of the year, shotgunned him too.

 -

This was definitely the most exciting stand of the year. That coyote left scratches on my chest and right arm where his toe nails dug into me for traction after he jumped right on top of me.

 -

First one with the TBAC.

Thank you, everybody! I'm glad to see some actual hunting photos.

Historically, I've always been a 60 coyote per season type, never invested the time to do 100, that's like work! Also, I've killed 12 on daylights several times but never did 13.

That's kinda like multiples on stand, I've done four more times than I can remember, but never killed five on a stand. However, I did do six, once. But, that kind of thing is getting more difficult; with the Foxpro Army out there beating the bushes. Actually, compared to the good old days when no one else was doing it, it's just more harder and much more competition.

No really, AR mentions 5 states. Hell, I was doing 5 states in the 70's. And, had it to myself, pretty much. I remember casually asking a gas station guy in a little Burg, how's the coyote hunting hereabouts? "Nope, we don't got 'em around here". Not even lying, and yet, he's in prime coyote country! Nowadays, those local yokels are doing 100 a year. Thanks Foxpro!

Thanks for the pictures, everybody.

Good hunting. El Bee

Dave,

I am not just trying to get on your good side here but you are an artist with a camera of the highest caliber. You have a gift of capturing a lot more in your pictures than most.

I wish I could put my finger on it. Not sure if it is the lens or the light or both.

Maybe I don't travel in the right circles but I don't see much in the way of really good wildlife photography.

If you were to hunt coyotes strictly with a camera, I can't imagine what you could come up with. I am sure you would capture their breath on a cold morning or snap the picture as they were shaking moisture from their fur after running through wet grass.

One of the best things I ever saw Merv Griswold capture on film was a coyote that was so nervous about the dogs that he lifted his leg and pissed on the other coyote. NO RESPECT!

took very few pics this year. the pike is 44# inches caught on lake of the woods on a tip up.

Ive never caught a pike. I hear what fine eating Walleye pike are, do the Northern pike fall in the same arena for table fare?

Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on April 21, 2017, 02:23 PM:

No, the Walleye are rated a lot higher but I never would turn down Northern. As far as I'm concerned, they are very good eating. My family used to soak them in salt water for a while then fry them in a batter like you would Bass.

As far as the name, "PIKE" I can hardly see the resemblance? Pickerel and Northerns and Muskies are all similar, like a Brown Trout looks a lot like a Rainbow.

Not so with the Walleye. No resemblance at all. Completely different habits. We caught Northerns trolling and casting spoons. For Walleyes, we pretty much targeted them at night with live minnows, shiners or chubs. And, deep.

But, the locals, given a chance, might turn up their nose at Northerns, if they have Walleye available. Kinda spoiled.

Good hunting. El Bee

edit: PS Lake of the Woods is right up on the Canadian border. Personally, I never fished that far north of Mille Ac or Leech Lake. A five pound Northern puts up a good fight, believe it.

Dave's slob looks like a musky to me? Sure is a beauty!!!

As for walleye, I liken them to being a big azz perch. And they eat just as good, too...

Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on April 22, 2017, 11:39 AM:

Fred, I had to look close, to be sure but I'm pretty sure it's no muskelunge. It's a well fed Northern.

As far as the observation comparing walleye to perch. That's not an invalid observation but a true walleye affectionado would be greatly offended.

Good hunting. El Bee

Az,

For the most part, what Leonard said.

Then again, taste is a personal preference. Some people really like catfish and bullheads. Also depends on how they are prepared.

All things being equal (preparation, etc.) most fisherman I know will take Walleye over Pike hands down. Perch and Crappie would run a close second.

If you have ever eaten Talapia (sp?), walleye are very similar.

The meat also looks different. Walleye, Perch, and Crappie all have lighter colored meat. Northern is more reddish and a heavier texture.

Between pheasant and walleye, eating is good in the Dakotas.

Nice pictures all around. Thanks. A lot of work getting all those gathered up and put up. I have never faced any concern about running out of stretchers so I like to see lines of coyotes and barn pics of put up fur.

I have to wonder. how on earth that fish fit through that itty bitty hole, if tedo's 'cat broke the 30# mark (it seems to have the frame to do it?), and how DAA's pictures pop and mine seem flat. (I know part of it, and it has nothing to do with equipment.)

I hope the buyer treated aaron and TR well.

I had big plans this year but I let the weather be an excuse. Turned out to be a good decision, search and rescue was dispatched twice, one guy spent the night in a blizzard and the other was lucky enough to hitch a ride with Union Pacific. Both were very lucky and made the evening news.

I did get one killed shortly after I looked up from the remote to see her doing the bouncy side step thing.

This was last year. The boys didn't ever see it, and the shot took them by surprise.
 -

This was one that crossed the two track at a bad time. I would have missed this particular shot 9.5 times out of ten.

I had a BB Gun, probably 8 yr old at the time? I didn't have a choice, my Dad decided on a pump and I forever envied friends that had the lever action. I think mine was slightly more powerful? And, it didn't hold a million BBs like the levers did. I have no idea what happened to it? I think, when we moved to California, there were many things you didn't need out there, fish spears and frog gigs and maybe that BB Gun was given away like everything else, but my .410 made the trip.

Back in the early to mid fifties, just about any store you went in to had BBs for sale. Mostly in the red tube, a little later in the milk carton. Some kids actually had war games with their BB Guns, live fire. A little too radical for me, but on the other hand I didn't actually know anybody that had their eye put out by a BB. But, that was the standard admonition, it could easily happen.

We roamed the neighborhood, seemed like virtually every day with a BB Gun and nobody ever called the cops? Pretty common, even as we were in the big city, Minneapolis, not out in farm country. Of course, in those days hardly anybody had a second car and it usually had the keys in the ignition overnight and all day long. Crime was pretty much nonexistent. I must have led a sheltered life, I can only remember seeing about three black people, total the whole time I lived in Minnesota.

Same when we moved to El Monte. I don't think there was any blacks in that town, at all? It was actually mostly Okies types and about 10% Mexican American, at least second generation, maybe third, but no wetbacks. These were the type that took Spanish in high school, and got an easy C. Possibly three Asians? I had no contact with blacks until the Army. As in none.

Oh well, we survived, didn't we? Of course, back then, we didn't need a wall because they weren't sneaking in. Why there is a question about building one today, I don't understand? As they say, it might cost one billion dollars or is it ten billion? But look at the cost for all the welfare programs, right off the bat, teaching these kids English. Right now, in El Monte, the high school population is 98% English as a second language. WTF?

Thanks Liberals!

Good hunting. El Bee

Here is a picture of a cat I called in last archery elk season. I wasn't hunting myself, but I was calling for a friend on a small piece of state ground with construction going on on the road just a short distance away. I had been carrying my 10mm but didn't on this one because of all the commotion with the trucks and dozers and excavators. I asked the friend, what do you think, should I bring the 10mm with me? He says, no, you won't need it. 20 minutes later that cat was at 30 feet and all I had was a pocketknife.
