I recently burnt a few ($100) Cabela's points on a pair of Vortex Raptor 6.5 x 32 simi-compact binoculars.
I freaking love these things !!!!!
I wear glasses and these are the first bino's I've ever owned that actually had a great field of view with my glasses on.
The 6.5 is low enough power that they are one hand steady to check something out on the next hillside.
They also 'gather light' early / late far better than the 10-12-16 power optics that seem to be the rage today.
Even when I have them on the tri-pod for long range sit down glassing the 6.5 is not at too much of a disadvantage for spotting animals.
Did I mention that I really like these things ????

I just got a pair of Vortex Diamonback 12x50 binoculars last week.
I feel the same way about them as Kokopelli does.
There clear as a bell and they got a life time warranty.

I know nothing about Vortex but they seem to be very popular these days?

I always hear, in optics, you get what you pay for. Meaning, good or excellent glass costs money. It could be that Vortex has optics that represent good value at a good price? I don't know how they managed this, but if true, that's good news for the public.

So, fine glass, quality materials and well made at a moderate price. How did they manage this? Sounds too good to be true?

Glad they are working well for you Koko.

The last few years, I've bought several sets of binoculars under $200 (most under a $100). Mainly because when the wife and I and our two kids would be out and about it was a pain for everyone to look at something when we only had one or two sets of binoculars for 4 people.

I think we get a lot more now in binos than say 25 years ago when cheap usually meant mis-aligned barrels, fuzzy images, and headaches right out of the box.

The last couple years, I've bought several sets of the Leupold 6x30 Yosemites and found them on sale for around $65. While their ergonomics and plastic parts leave some things to be desired, I'm amazed at how clear they are for the price. I bought a set just to leave in my pickup. We have another pair relegated to the kitchen window. I can't think of better set for a kids to abuse that won't break the bank.

My favorite of my inexpensive sets is the Bushnell 8x40 Legends that I picked for $100 after rebate. They fit my hands and face really well, focus smoothly/nicely, and are really sharp. If my Swaros were in the shop, I wouldn't feel a bit bad about carrying these for the day.

[Big Grin]

When I was in my prime (about 100 years ago) standard operating procedure was to go to K-Mart before season started to pick up a new pair of hunting britches and a pair of 7x35 binoculars.
Both were used, abused & thrown away at the end of season.

There is a write up in American Hunter this month about a moderately priced Leica that really sounds like a good deal. You should look into it.

I keep forgetting how wealthy you Calif. Slum Lords really are.
Merely pocket money.

Having used the Vortex Raptors for a couple of weeks, my opinion of them has not changed.
Love 'em !!!

I bought a pair of 6x Yosemite's from Leupolds and for a pair to leave in the truck, they are really nice at $75 or so.

Yes I can see better with my Swaro's but I ain't leaving them in the truck.

You might want to look into a Viper system? I wouldn't be without mine.

Hey Cal, didn't you mentioned here a while back you got a new set of Leica Geovids?
Wondering how you like them, and whether or not you use the ballistic curves at all?

KED, I pretty much feel like I couldn't live without them. I don't use the ballistic curve program, because I pretty much already have the hold overs or come ups figured in one way or another for all of my stuff. The feature I use is the "actual yardage" or corrected yardage feature for shooting at up or down angles. It works. I killed quite a few coyotes at over 400 this summer with the longest being at 680 and the corrected yardage came into play a lot.

Good to hear, thanks Cal!
My 1600-b LRF has the ballistic shit in it, too...and I never use it.

Got a line on a pair of Geovid 8x42 HD-Rs, and just grabbed 'em up. They don't have the ballistic shit inside, and didn't think I'd miss it in the binos, either.

But these do have automatic EHR (Equivalent Horziontal Range). From 10-600yds, any line of sight angle to target is automatically corrected for in the displayed range. That should cover most shots, with the rifle or the bow. And it'll still range out to 1400yds, without correction...

From a quick glance, the glass looks at least as nice as my Trinovid 10x42 BNs.

Might be putting those Trinovids up for sale, if anyone is interested?

Cal, tell us about that 680 yard shot. All details. And the rationale, if you don't mind.
