This isn't a coyote predator rifle but anyone know how to either convert 30.06 casings into the 8mm06? Or where to buy some casings?
Looked at one site last night but they wanted $5.78 ea.

Looks like we either figured out how to shoot long range for elk or quit hunting.

The closest we've gotten to any elk this season has been 434yds and that was 2 bulls. We have late season cow tags. We see elk everyday but at 1200 plus yards and usually a mile straight up. big difference between range finder line of site and walking on land.

Wouldn't you just neck up '06 brass? It's a small change, should only take one step. Such a small change, I wonder if a mandrel type die is even needed. Prolly just make sure there is a decent taper on the leading edge of the expander on your FL sizer and do it in one pass.

Yep, that'd do it...but, to what end?

Reckon a straight '06 is plenty for an elk to even 600yds. And it ain't like their vital area is small. So ya don't need a Bugholes grouping rifle to execute that shot, successfully...

Once you get beyond "hold on fur" range, what you need is a reliable, repeatable optic that will correct for bullet drop.

In short, take the $$$ you'd spend for building an 8mm, and out it toward some good .30cal boolits to develop a good shooting load around.

Then, spend some more on a quality scope that TRACKS, and with some practice & discretion, bet ya start dropping those elk that you useta think we're 'out of range'...

Food for thought?

I'm trying to figure out the app.? By the question, I assume you might own own a '03 Springfield that has been rebarreled to 8mm?

There must be dozens of cartridges based on the '06 cartridge case, shortened, necked down or in your case(situation) necked up, which like the above gentlemen mentioned, is just about the easiest to do. Anybody charging you $5.78 each is a crook, even if it's loaded ammunition rather than empty resized cases.

So, what you want to do is have a supply of 8mm'06 ammunition for elk hunting? Is that correct? True enough, it's not a 1200 yard cartridge, but in the right hands, it might be a 500 yard cartridge. As anyone who follows these pages knows, I'm not in favor of "long range" for anything but steel.

But back to the problem. First of all you have a wildcat chambering and in need of replenishment of your ammo supply? Is that correct? Do you have a supply of fired cases? There are people that will reload them for you, using any bullet you want, and I'm sure they would be a lot cheaper than buying empty cases on the Internet.

If you pay for the dies, bullets, primers, powder, and postage, I'd do it for nothing, if that would help, but that's weeks away, even optimistically.

I'm still not sure what you got and what's your objective? But, you won't find a better place for accurate, knowledgable information, no matter what you are trying to do. Dang, I'd hate to think that elk hunting in the "Intermountain region" has deteriorated that much. I don't have much respect for 1200 yard elk hunters, myself. But, perk up, you could be chasing them with a virtually useless 30/30....

Good hunting. El Bee

It's the other half's father's old rifle. We have everything but a 30.06. Now he's thinking of having it re-barreled to a 30.06.
He was thinking that you neck down 30.06 but has never done it so wasn't sure what and how.
We just need to start shooting long range after retirement. You're not even going to shoot a coyote up here under 400 yards.
We have the .308, .270 my mom's 65.55 swede mauser. Plus a ton of varmint rifles that won't be much good up here unless we do a lot of calling in October. Or MOVE again. LOL
Just thought I'd ask as this place has a lot of knowledgeable older guys who have been there and got the T-shirt.

All the cases are old and not sure of how good they are.

He just went and dug out a reloading book and it tells you how to do it.
Shut my mouth just take some time and READ!.
The other half's dad was a gunsmith and built several rifles way back and now we have them.
Just like my mom's Swede Mauser by dad built and cut down the stock and so forth. I've always wanted that rifle and had to wait until they both passed on.

Thanks for the info. Got a hunch I've lost my .308 to my hubby. He really likes it. Need to set up all the reloading equipment and get started.
Good thing the gun range is only a mile from the house and has a 1,000 yard range. Just don't know if my shoulder will handle the training.
I have the scope a Nightforce double dot just need to learn how to use it.

Interesting article in the Oct. '18 Fur-Fish-Game magazine by Ed Hall.
The point being at long range (>500 yds) the bullet may not have enough energy to mushroom. It will kill but not drop a big game animal in it's tracks.
Food for thought on long shots.

Ma'am, I've only ever elk hunted with a rifle one time...

My partner shot his bull with a .270, while I passed on the bull right next to his (and held out for a bigger one) with a 6.5SAUM in hand. Based on what I saw, i sure didn't feel "under gunned" with my choice...

I've shot 2 elk in my whole life so far.
First one was with my .270.
Last year I shot one with the .243. I didn't put her down but you knew she was hit in the boiler but the other just couldn't let her stand and shot her with the .308.

I need a new right shoulder. But since the operation limits you for the rest of your life and they haven't really perfected everything like the knee and hips I put off having it fixed. So I put up with it. I can shoot and don't feel much at the time. But come evenings and sleeping forget it.
So I've gotten recoil shy or over protected of my shoulder.
I did a frontal dislocation swinging my hat at 2 fighting dogs in the back of my truck. Wasn't good enough I did it twice. Finally had to crawl in and lay down on one with my legs to break it up. Ripped ears bleed terrible. So that was how I hurt my shoulder. 2 alpha females that did nothing but fight. If one started the other one would wait to finish it.

Other half got to ready the ballistics for the 8mm06 and the 30.06 and there isn't handful of difference between them.
So he'll probably let it go and trade off some rifles for a 6.5 creed more. Anyone interested in a .204 in a AR Remington? LOL We found out the expensive way we're not AR people.

Sure, I've got an AR gathering dust myself, so I wouldn't be interested but ko ko needs one for defense of hearth and home.

I'm still not sure what your intention is or was but as long as you have sorted it out I guess we can forget about it.

But, here's my most recent gripe. Everybody and their brother is chambering in a 6.5 Creedmor. I fail to see any advantage over 8 or 10 others in that caliber. It's a damned FAD! Shooters can be such jump on the bandwagon gun buyers! In fact, I was just reading an ad for Kimber in American Hunter today. Believe it or not they have a model called the Hunter that is chambered in an old fossil chambering that is a nostalgia trip, the 257 Roberts! I just about fell off my chair and good for them, it's an excellent cartridge and I see no reason why it couldn't wipe the floor with a 6.5 Creedmore. AS I remember it anyway, all these cartridges stem from others except for a very few completely original designs. I think the Roberts is based on the old 7X57 necked down and the 257 Roberts necked down becomes the 6mmRemington.

I'm a member of the Nothing New Under the Sun Camp. All these people with their latest and brilliant design don't know that we are awash with cartridge desgns comming out our ass, already. But, as the man said, we are buying a dream. Everybody has a dream cartridge they don't own....yet. Just as soon as they get tired of Creedmore, they will be stacked in the corner in favor of the '06 or (hopefully) a nice, forgotten 270W. But, the shooting world is waiting with baited breath for the next necked down Creedmore that nobody actually needs. In other words, we could suspend cartridge development for a hundred years and there would be no harm done.

End of rant

Good hunting. El Bee

You're right LB. The other half gets something in his head and he is like a dog with a bone. He'll worry it to death until he thinks of something else and finally drops it.

We have every predator cal made out there that I'm aware of.
I even have my dad's first rifle he ever bought a lever action 30.30.

Who knows what we will end up with or not?

He keeps pulls out these old rifle cals that I've really never heard of. I grew up with 25.06 and 30.06. My dad hunting big game so big rifles. Didn't even know of small cals other than a .22 until I got married.

Thanks for everyone's insight.

Digging out reloading "STUFF" found a bunch of dies. Even a 8mm06. And a bunch of other items that was the FILaws from his gunsmithing days.
He even found another P.O Ackley book. Even figured out how to load the 8mm06.
Still have a ton of stuff to figure out and actually find since we boxed it all up and moved everything.

Just thought I'd let ya'll know. Even mountain hillbilly's can figure things out. LOL

Earthwalker, please tell your friend that wants to join that I have a slight problem before I can get him in. See, I inadvertently left the application queue open and right now, I have 10,469 applications ahead of him. Believe me, this is a tedious process to delete that many registrations! But, it has to be done before I can get around to joining him up. Hours. Tedious hours!

I might contact my Guru and see if he knows a way to shorten the procedure, but I'm not looking forward to it if I have to plow through them one by one. I screwed up and looks like I will be paying the piper. For my negligence. One little box I forgot to click! SOB! You prob think, hey no big deal. You have no idea! It can drive you nuts. And last time I only had 800 that sneaked in before I turned it off. This time they really nailed me!
