Well, I got a bug up my ass. After BassProShops, where they were virtually sold out, I went to a smaller local chain called Turner's, I think they are restricted to California? So, BassPro is waiting for micro stamping, and their counters were pretty well cleaned out. Turner's, on the other hand, had a fair size crowd, and although it's more like a Big 5, in size, they had at least 3 times as many handguns displayed.
Interestingly, only one Colt; some behemoth revolver about 2 feet long with a price tag of $3,500. Don't ask me what it was chambered, I couldn't have cared less?

So, pic a number and I had to wait probably 45 minutes? At BassPro, I started to pick a number but I was next and there were three guys willing to show me stuff. I don't know what's going on at that store?

I looked at everything but Glocks. There was this fat guy clerk, you know how they put some dink behind the counter and suddenly, he's a firearm expert? He told me that my 40S&W was a POS and the Glock 9mm was more powerful. You know, the +P+ loadings, if you can find them, I guess is what he meant? Well, I was all over that shit since I handload for my Shield and can bump performance substantially. There were at least a dozen people standing there when I told him he was full of shit, I can make my Shield crap all over a Glock 9mm. I'm sorry, Vic, I just can't warm up to the Glock. The big secret is the number of L.E. that happen to accidentally shoot themselves.

They have the lower shelf on one display case that has different guns that they won't even show you unless you are a cop. These are useful types, like as backups, or performance, or features that plain folk just don't need and aren't allowed to buy. L.E. can purchase these slick models, but I cannot. Yes, I have a huge attitude.

I made up my mind that I was done looking and was going to buy something, today. Well, that's not accurate, I mean I made an application and if I pass the investigation, I can pick it up ten days from now, after 5:02 P.M. And, if I fail to pick it up after 30 or 40 days, the sale is voided and I am fined 30% of the sale price.

Now, the six pages of paperwork and the stupid questions; did I ever think I was a danger to myself or others, etc.? I have to fill out the questionnaire and then it's printed. The guy asked me to very carefully review the document for errors. I did and he questioned me; "you studied and verified all 25 items for accuracy"? I said, yes I did; that I may be old, but I'm not senile. And, he said (twice) that that was the fastest verification he had ever witnessed, was I quite sure because at the very least, anything incorrect would delay the purchase or I could be held accountable for a false statement, bla bla bla... I told him (which is true) that I an a graduate of the Evelyn Woods Reading Dynamics so he can be quite confident, (as I was) that all those 25 factual statements were correct.

Yes, this is starting to get under my skin, right down to the part where they wouldn't give me the damned thing until after 5:02 P.M.

I have to prove that I am a resident of The People's Republik and that requires that I produce a utility bill, gas, elect, or water bill. Or since I don't carry those statements around in my back pocket, the optional thing is my vehicle registration. Now it really gets the bureaucratic gears spinning because my registration, (I had to go out and get it from the glove box) it had expired on the 3rd, and this was the 3rd. It just so happened that I sent to check Friday the 1st to get it postmarked so I wouldn't have to pay the late fee. So, the asshole said, this is no good, it's expired, it's invalid and if I was pulled over, I'd get beat up and arrested, or some shit. No, he didn't go that far but this guy was a real DRAMA QUEEN.

Unfortunately, I'm just between getting my sticker in the mail and I have never had a cop actually worry about it like this prick did. We are talking about a 350 pound blob, so I wasn't going to hit him in his smart mouth; these guys are able to just lay on ya and suffocate ya to death. I don't have a choice but to return with my utility bills to prove that I am indeed a resident of this fucked up state. Everything will still be processed in the meantime, so they didn't send me home to get them now, I can bring it when the 10 days have elapsed.

And, citizens in this crummy state are picking numbers and standing in line to buy "weapons" no matter how difficult they make the process. Things like a $25 card that says I know how to safely handle a gun, and for some reason, they expire after 5 years? Then there is a fee called DROS or something like that, that must be paid separate, on every purchase. I added it up and those chickenshit fees and tax came to $128 over the sale price.

This is what it's like here, and who know? Maybe your state will look at Kalifornia and think they can do the same thing. Be careful!

end of rant!

Good hunting. El Bee

PS what did I get?

No offense taken Leonard, there was a time I felt just like you, until I actually owned a few Glocks and used them….sometimes, you just don't know, what you don't know?
I haven't bought a "store bought" firearm in maybe 20 years?, any buys I make are online forums, we meet in a Walmart parking lot, shoot the shit, get finger prints on the firearm, dicker over price, make the deal and wave good bye.
Just traded for another Glock recently, 2nd generation G17, I had an extra older Dillon press he liked, met at Wally world, had nice visit and we each walked with what we wanted. I can't imagine the frustration you suffer there as well as fees and registrations etc., you need to finally pull the trigger and get out of that gawd forsaken state.

Thank you for reminding me, I knew there was something I needed to do!

And, I also know that my aversion to Glocks is mainly due to my contrary nature and not based on familiarity with the firearm. Come to think of it, I don't remember ever picking one up? How's that for closed mindedness?

This Parking Lot rendezvous is impossible in this state. Even if you suggested on, your odds of meeting a L.E. sting instead, are higher than exchanging child pornography.

Why did you think you needed a second gen Glock? I don't understand that kind of retro like buying Colt snake guns?

Good hunting. El Bee

edit: PS I've been meaning to ask you for a while now. How are your tortoises doing? My oldest baby that I gave to my daughter up north is doing great, his shell is developing the fork that shows him as a male and the interesting thing is that his shell is pristine, almost shiny, he hardly knows what dirt is, they let him crawl around on their bed with the cats and the Pug. He's about 8-9 inches in length of his upper shell. Now mine are worn smooth from crawling into the burrow, which is at least 6 foot long and curved and I can't see the end of it. It's in the side of a hill and they dug it themselves.

I bet they are. After I buy my first Toyota, maybe the Glock will be the next barrier to fall? But there’s only one that I’ve taken a shine to, Paul’s FJ Cruiser. I’d give it a try by now if I wasn’t so way overpriced.

Multiple Glocks?....well, there are full size Glocks, and small Glocks, and different calibers, so I can easily visualize a guy have several?
So what are the regulations of you toting a firearm home, say it was given to you by a relative or friend, but not "purchased", do you literally have to register firearms there? Forgive me, Im totally ignorant of California rules and regs.
Gave our tortoises to my brother. We had them here for a couple years, and although Florida has a native Gopher Tortoise, I think our western variety can't take the humidity? We went back to McNeal for two years in 2016 to sell place and took them back to Arizona, then gave to my brother in Tucson. They are thriving, even McNeal was out of their native habitat, causing them to stay way long in the den before coming out of hibernation, and going into hibernation way to early compared to their native Sonoran desert. He loves having them and has made quite the habitat area for them to wander around in and be in their home turf.

Handgun purchase Arizona style.
Went to Cabela's in Phoenix. Had a Ruger .380 LCP in mind.
Young lady behind the counter was pleasant, cute & very knowledgeable about handguns.
Decided to purchase the Ruger after drooling over it for a bit. Also, a 'battle pack' of ammo & a couple of boxes of 'personal defense' rounds.
Gave the young lady my Cabela's credit card, my concealed carry permit & I seem to remember something about a half page yes / no form.
She then disappears in the back for a few minutes and comes back out to inform me that I have enough 'Cabela's points' to cover the purchase.
Signed my name a couple of times & she walked me to the front door and handed me my new in the box handgun.
All in all, rather pleasant.

Just went thru the same thing last week. Bought a baby Glock and after all the bullshit you feel like your buying a new house or something. Jumping thru hoops and answering silly ass questions.

Im a Glock fan. I was raised on revolvers, and have had a couple 1911's here and there. I like the simplicity of a Glock and they shoot good to boot. We can only have Gen3's here too. I really like the enlarged magazine release on the Gen4+ but it is un-attainable for me. I will be putting an oversized controls kit in this one though...another 50 bucks.

We will have to do the same thing come July when we want to buy ammo.

Yeah, and the cocksuckers already cut off our access to mail order from out of state.

These Democrats in this state are taking over. Their way or the highway.

To answer your question, Vic. I don't know right now but I'm sure they are pointing in that direction, ALL TRANSFERS, LIKE WHEN I GAVE MY DAUGHTER THE LADy SMITH THAT BELONGED TO HER MOM. Same shit, ten day, pass background investigation, pay a $30 DROS fee and place the gun in custody of a recognized dealer, and I think he would get something for his trouble? So far, I don't think it's a law but there is absolutely no reason why it couldn't be because Democrats have a veto proof majority and can pass any restrictions and repressive regulations they want.

This is what will happen Federally after the 2020 election if we don't wake up. Like they say, Freedom is only one generation away from extinction.

Leonard, my friend,

If I managed a Cabelas or Bass Pro in The People's Republic of California, and knew I had to sell guns to customers of your experience, I would hire a Stormy Daniels look alike that liked to show off her double D's and I would have her sell you a gun. Then you wouldn't have to make it hard on a young fella who has to abide by stupid background checks that he prolly doesn't agree with either.

As Stormy was selling you a gun, you could talk to her chest and forget all about throwing a dead fish in your neighbor's car or pushing his ice shack into open water on the lake.

You do crack me up. Lol!

Well, well, well! Is Scott out on parole? Haven't heard from you in a coon's age! And, how's your lovely wife? Damn, you sure have a million dollar view off the back porch, I'm so envious! Not to mention the unique local flavor, where social activities revolve around that upscale 7 lane bowling alley right next to the livestock auction. Almost a time warp, People here in The Land Of The Fruits And The Nuts have no idea that places like Kadoka exist....did I spell that right?

Anyway, you could drop in "once in a while," which is a shorter timeframe than coon ages.

You know, I'm still offended by your laughing at my combat hush puppies!

Cabelas? Bass Pro? What are these places you speak of? I have "this guy"... his name is Rip. Honest to God. FFL. I don't buy a lot of guns, but on the rare occasion when I do, I just go to Rip. He hands me his catalogs and I pick the gun and price I like. We fill out the obligatory paperwork and he orders it and I pay him his wholesale cost plus $20. Last gun I bought was my Walthers PPX 9mm. If I recall, I think I got it for about 250-300 less than the stores were selling it for. If Rip isn't home, I have another guy named Sam, my gun plumber. He offers the same deal - wholesale plus 20. Must be a local thing. Hell, Sam pillared a Howa I had - two machined pillars - for $35, total. Had him put a 2-stage trigger in my machine gun and replace the pistol grip with a more ergonomic one. Charged me his cost for the parts and, for labor, I traded him 3 Ghurka Beast cigars. Had 4, but smoked one and it kicked my ass. LOL He loved them. Says he still owes me some labor on that trade.

Leonard, you might want to consider moving to Kentucky. They just passed a law that says you no longer have to have a concealed deadly weapons license to carry a deadly weapon. A deadly weapon is not just a hand gun in KY.

The state defines a "deadly weapon" as:
(a) A weapon of mass destruction;
(b) Any weapon from which a shot, readily capable of producing death or other serious physical injury, may be discharged;
(c) Any knife other than an ordinary pocket knife or hunting knife;
(d) Billy, nightstick, or club;
(e) Blackjack or slapjack;
(f) Nunchaku karate sticks;
(g) Shuriken or death star; or
(h) Artificial knuckles made from metal, plastic, or other similar hard material;

So you are pretty much good to go in this state. It takes about 15 minutes to buy a gun.

Last gun I bought was 22-250 from a local gun store. Took all of 10 mins to fill out the paper work and for the counter guy to box my rifle up. Handed cash over and off I went. Easy here in Texas.

Oh yeah, you guys are a big help, keeping me informed about how swell your state handles firearm transactions. Real big help! Kentucky? Never been there, but the folks I talked to when I was in Cincinnati definitely, and strenuously told me: do not go there! One of my wife's old girlfriend's had moved there and bought a house for 30% of what she sold her house for in California. So....I didn't risk it. [Smile] Just kidding.

This bureaucratic bullshit; forget ten minute transactions, I'm still 7 days and 5 hours short of taking possession of my 100 year old design. (hint hint)

But, all you guys pay attention to the bully tactics in The People's Republic. Take a look at Minnesota, where I was born and the freak they send to congress? That's what gerrymandering will do for you. It's how I lost my Republican congressman here until just a few years ago, and this is a solid conservative area just like Orange County and it happened there, as well. These Democrat assholes will do every dirty trick in the book, so "watch your six."

Paul, don't be contrary. There are negatives with every choice. I suppose your Glock is just about perfect? I've had my Combat Commander since about 1970/71 and never had an accidental discharge, cocked and locked. I assume you have not shot yourself in the leg, yet?

I don't know? Yes, a 1911 is heavy, presents challenges when concealed carry is contemplated. That's why I subscribe to the bag of golf clubs solution. A #4 Wood is not a very good putter, so it's nice to have a choice.

You just can't talk to these Glock people! I will make out, some how, some way. Imagine Victor, used to be fairly competent with a .357, all tricked out. Now he's collecting obscure 2nd generation plastic Glocks because (Golly) there are so many different calibers and big ones and little ones and so on. I'm not poking fun, he knows his shit, I'm sure of that.

Were the Peanut Gallery to take up a collection and buy me a Glock, (dream on) I would NOT carry it, probably not even fire it, I am so pig headed! So there!

Don't know how you managed to pigeonhole me as a "collector" of Glocks? I like their function, utility, availability and mostly their cheap price. The few I have, I got for around $300-$350, no tax, no paper work, no fees and no waiting, how can ya beat that?

As to my old competition revolver, funny you mention that piece. I had sold that to a fellow competitor and gun store owner maybe 10 years ago? Last Dec when I was out there I dropped by to see him. He's out of the business now, but I had figured he had peddled that revolver long ago. We shot the shit a spell, and I had to ask if he happened to know who he sold it to, or if by chance he still had it in his personal stuff.

Said he had it still and had only shot it a total of 12 shots, just to see how accurate it was. Asked him what he'd take for it, he said whatever I gave you for it. It's now back in my safe, and I have actually shot it in two local matches here. It's a bit of a dinosaur, old technology red dot sight, and much heavier than current competition revolvers are now. I picked it up new as a Frank Glenn custom build back in 1990, and would imagine I ran a couple hundred thousand rounds thru it, it's a bit loose in lock up and I had to stretch the crane to take up the cylinder end shake issue, but the sonofabitch still shoots pretty damned good.....only wish the shooter could.

Leonard, I have a plan for you. Sell that mansion of yours and move to Kansas. Little place right north of Fort Riley - home of the 1st Infantry Division, the vaunted Big Red One. Nestled between Tuttle Creek Reservoir and Milford Lake, the largest lakes in Kansas, in the beautiful Flint Hills, is a little berg of about 150 homes, aptly names - ready for this?- Leonardville, Kansas! You wouldn't even have to change the name. Buy the whole damned town. That country is ass deep in coyotes and you'd be within 20 minutes of Irwin Army Hospital for all the pro bono healthcare you can stand. In the fall, you have K-State football, and K-State basketball in the winter. We're fixing to win the Big XII Saturday, then off to the "big dance".

If you find yourself lonesome for liberals, you can drive an hour and a half east to Lawrence and hang out with those candy-asses at KU. They're all queer as a 3-dollar bill, but then again,... they're liberals.

You could kill 200+ coyotes up there in a season and barely put a dent in them. Global warming concern? Hell, the tornadoes hardly ever damned near kill you only once in a while. Some of the most beautiful country in Kansas, and everyone votes red.
