Hello Gentlemen..
I just got done watching a Foxpro Furtakers episode featuring Kelly in Oklahoma with Foxpro staff member Al Morris.
First let me say that Kelly is a helluva shot.
Question for Kelly if he is still around on the forums(s):
What rifle / caliber / load combo are you using Kelly?
Also, noticed you may have been carrying a revolver behind your right hip. Just wondering what you carry.

Yes, the gun laws here in NJ are getting worse Leonard. I am still thinking about a move to Arizona in the future, but I will be leaving family behind.

Kelly was in my neck of the woods about a year ago and at that time he told me he was shooting a 22 creedmore. Don't remember what bullet/powder.

49' leaving family is a big deal. There is nothing more important. Than family.
Hell, I'm kickin' around the idea of a complete life style change & moving to southern NV to be closer to family.
Go figure that one out ?

Interesting thanks TRnCO. I would have guessed he was shooting a 6.5 Creedmoor they way he was knocking those dogs down.

Last I knew Kelly was running a .22 Creedmoor with a 75 Berger. Kelly since retiring doesn't visit many boards very often. I think retirement is treating him well!

Boy, those Creedmoor's must be the hot ticket, this year? I should throw away my 243! Just kidding. But, why is everybody jumping on that particular bandwagon?

Nick, that episode is a year or two old, already. Sure is cool to see some of that same ground on TV that I've been blessed to share stands on, as well!
KJ was shooting his .22-243AI for that show, a twin to my rifle (same smith, same reamer). 80gr AMAX was the bullet used...a real thumper as you can see!
And, that wasn't a pistola on his hip, watch again! Rather, it was a fancy knife/sheath made by our friend Ryan Arrington. He makes a heckuva blade, and that sheath allows a good measure of protection for it...
As TR & Brent mentioned, KJ has since migrated to a .22Creedmoor, with shorter barrel, and lighter 75VLD, to better accommodate a suppressor. The .22-243AI running on slow burn Retumbo is not happy with a short barrel, it wants that length to build the speed. Whereas, .22Creed on H4350 will get close in speed, via less bullet, faster burn & pressure spike. But, ya pay a price for that, as KJ already set that .22Creed barrel back before 800 rds, where the bigger .22-243AI went over 1200 and still shoots well. But, it's a worthy trade to tote a suppressor on 4" less barrel..
Ever since I got my .22-243Win been swearing that hotrod .224s are where it's at for coyote killin'. And uppin' /Improving to the AI just made it, better! .22 cals. stone 'em like bigger cals, but shoot flatter and with less recoil. Thats what Leonard & others here have known for a long time, albeit with slow twist/light bullets.
But, when ya can get a big enough case to throw a heavy for cal boolit fast enough to match trajectory, you've got a real winner on your hands! And the .22-243AI holds enough slow burn powder to make great speed at relatively mild pressure...
Now, if only I can get a coyote to step out (in daylight) to catch a 69TMK for my Redline! Proved em to 625yds over the weekend, the dope velocity trued @ 4005fps! For reference, that's about 400fps FASTER than a .22-243AI can muster, and you saw how that beast throttles coyotes! ![[Razz]](tongue.gif)

Funny, I realized the age of that video after I posted.
The knife sheath had me fooled. Though I was wondering in the back of my mind why I couldn't see the butt of a revolver sticking through Kelly's jacket.
The 22-243 sounds interesting! I was actually giving the .224 Valkyrie a serious look, but gave up on it as I am already suffering from tinnitus in my right ear.
Leonard, the 6.5 Creed is not legal for coyotes in NJ, thus I am still shooting a .243 model 700 or .223 Rem R-15. We need to keep it under .25 caliber here.
If you are so inclined, this is a short video that shows what the 6.5 Creedmoor does on a coyote. You can FF to 2:10 for the kill shot. But yeah, the .243 kills them just as dead I agree.

I basically agree with what Fred said above. Specifically, that a high capacity case in .224 caliber is all you will ever need for coyotes.
For that, I personally think a 22-250 Ackley is just about optimum and the wildcats based on the 243 case, such as the 22-243, 22-243Acley, and the one I'm currently using, the 22-243Middlested, they are all the same, performance wise, and when you start specifying a fast twist to accommodate heavy for caliber bullets, that's a personal choice that not everybody needs.
What I'm saying is that there are lots of coyotes killed with 55-65 grain bullets but if you intend to use 70-75+ bullets, you have a purpose beyond normal applications and you need to carefully select the bullet for terminal effect, otherwise the VLD types could produce cripples and runners at long range, and while I'm at it, I think responsible shooting is inside 500 yards. I have not shot very many coyotes beyond that distance, personally and there are practical reasons for that attitude. I think it's a terrible waste if you cannot recover the animal and you would be surprised how difficult they are to find at that distance, so it's wasting time in searching, and a big fat zero if you never do find it.
So anyway, I see no vast need for that kind of performance which realistically, you won't be offered a shot that far out maybe once a weekend and then you need to weigh the plusses and minuses and whether or not you need that animal, or if it's an ego thing.
Now, I do understand the reasons for cutting off 4" of barrel length and then figuring out, or reworking your load data, like for a slightly faster powder or to change the bullet weight for whatever your reason.
Happily, for most of us, this discussion goes way over our heads because the fact is, a plain vanilla 243 will kill a lot of coyotes.
I can't resist one snide comment about that caliber limitation in New Jersey for coyotes. They couldn't justify it, logically.
Anyway, I have been very happy with 22-250Ackley and 22-243's of one type or another and limiting my bullet selections to about 62-65 grains and I see no vast need for a change unless I start chopping 4" off the front end and starting over. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

PS I hope I've covered most of the caveats I can think of? Really, there are many calibers and chamberings that do quite well on coyotes, depending on the bullet of choice. I have a factory Ruger Model 77V in 220Swift that has killed a lot of coyotes and although I haven't used it in more than ten years, I'm sure it would still do the job.

Leonard if I'm thinking right the 22 Creedmoor has about the same case capacity as the 22-250AI or maybe a grain more. You get factory brass ready to load so it might be a good deal starting over.
I haven't talked to Kelly in a while but I drive down his way fairly often and I can see why he might want a gun that can reach way out there. With all the calling pressure these days, it stands to reason that even the best caller might have one hang up now and then.

Hey Tom! Hope you have been well.
I was actually thinking the Valkyrie and Creedmor rounds might be overkill for New Jersey, which your post confirms. Perhaps I will stick with the .223 and try to preserve my hearing as much as possible.
Leonard, I didn't mean to sound offensive by putting the unnamed one in quotes. I just can't remember who he is / was from my time here in the past. Tim maybe?
Anyhoo, I am still interested in hearing your opinion on heavier bullets, especially in .243 and .223.
