The good news is he just started it and gets the first year free. The bad news is after the year is up he has to pay $8,000.00 per month to continue treatment.
A lot of people blame big pharma and probably justifiably so to some extent, but I also blame the FDA. It use to be we did small statistical samples of several hundred participants. Today they do double blind studies with thousands of participants to get FDA approval. I recently watched a documentary about new Alzheimer's treatments where a drug company decided to not go forward with a large clinical trial because they didn't feel the results from smaller tests warranted the billion dollar gamble. The drug had positive results but didn't do well enough.
While recovering from prostate cancer, I would hang out on Healingwell.com prostate cancer forum. We had a mother of a young boy who joined the forum who asked where we purchased our generic viagra. Sildenafil Citrate is also used in a drug called revatio that is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension. Revatio is a 20 mg dosage vs the full strength viagra dose of 100 mg. Since viagra and revatio are both under sildenafil citrate's patent the mother could not afford to buy Pfister's product here in the US for a product needed daily.
Something needs to be done and lesser regulations would surely help this situation.

Curious. I just used the calculator function to figure what my Lialda costs per year. It's $11,000, of which I pay a modest copay most of the year until I get bumped into (the dreaded) Tier 3. I never thought I would worry about the cost of drugs? Never been a pill taker, but these days I probably take 20 assorted every day, including my pain meds. Morphine is actually almost reasonable, about $75 a month for 90 30 mg. It's not for sissies.

Kaiser shows the retail price as $910, but, in Tier 3, I (will) pay 73% which will probably commence with my next reorder? But, since Medicare D pays 50% I have to pay 73% of that....I think?For right now it's a $45 copay.
That price for 300 at the bottom of the page seems a moderately good deal, under the circumstances. Thanks!

I take 2 pills a day. Don't have a clue what they cost as the VA charges me a flat $27.00 each for a 90 day supply. So I get to live for $18.00 a month.

Every once in a while, I wonder why I never applied for any treatment at a VA facility? I'm eligible, of course, anybody able to produce a DD214 is eligible but for some reason I never considered it?
On the other hand, with the scandal involving wait times lately, it has not crossed my mind that now is the time. Another thing is the situation with Danny Batistini. I remember before and after he was diagnosed with lung cancer up in the Reno VA hospital, they came back and told him after removing one lung that he was cancer free. I think he died maybe six months later. Guess they missed the boat on that diagnosis? That kind of told me everything I needed to know about the VA.

The quality of the Viagra I buy is as good as the US stuff. It is made by a big pharmaceutical company named Cipla. Cipla has the license to make Cialis for third world markets. A lot of these drug companies license third party manufacturers in developing countries to sell their patented products in countries that couldn't afford U.S. production costs. I've never used anything from Sun Pharma who is the company that offers Lialda on the website I gave you. A person would just have to try it to see if it worked or pay to have a sample analyzed. I've thought about trying their generic Lipitor pills a couple of months before having my Cholesterol checked, but I get generic Lipitor for about 5 dollars a month from Wally.

I googled Sun Pharma and they say they are the 5th largest generic manufacturer http://www.sunpharma.com/
I went to their product list and it shows lialda but they do not make any PDE5 inhibitors such as viagra or cialis.

I mentioned the VA for you to consider the reduced cost of meds. They will give you anything you ask for if you just ask for it. I know that for a fact. I was on a pill that cost 85 a month with a scrip so I asked the VA for it and I have it at 9 a month. Infomercial.
It matters not what system you are using a second opinion is always advised.

You're right, good to know. I might check into it one of these days after I spend who knows digging out that DD214?
One excellent advantage of the VA is the burial service. My wife is interred at the Riverside National Cemetery. When the time comes, I'll be with her, all at no charge , so you can't beat the price. And, it's a very nice place, right across the highway from March Air Force Base.

Another good place to buy prescriptions is Costco. I have good health coverage but it doesn't cover any ED drugs or off label drugs. I've used both categories since Prostate Cancer. The local WalMart Pharmacy is the cheapest place to purchase generic drugs covered by my insurance. If it isn't covered and/or generic they are the worst place to buy drugs. I've had several instances where uncovered prescriptions and/or non generic drugs at Wally world were five times more expensive than at Costco. Unfortunately for may of you there isn't a Costco nearby.

I don't know how to shop prescription drugs? Automatically, I just go to the Kaiser Pharmacy. But several years ago, I used to get Rx filled at Costco. I thought they were very reasonable, but further away. I don't know how to convert a prescription my Dr writes into something I can take to Walmart or Costco? I might have to look into that?
A few years ago, I would have never believed how much money I could spend on drugs! It's an eyeopener!
I remember that there is a low cost Pharmacy in town. Small independent joint that the indigent types use. But, to think every place is the same is a mistake. In fact, I know that Kaiser is pretty expensive in almost everything. I had 5 colonoscopies last year. One was called a "double balloon" and also had the "Pill Cam" The copay for that at Kaiser is $350. Starts adding up.
