This is exactly what I expect from New York Socialists. Read on~
NYPD: 'We Will Arrest You' If On the Road By DANIEL HALPER Martial law has been decalred in New York City. This comes in response to this year's biggest snow storm. The New York Police Department is threatening to arrest anyone on the road. They are calling it a "travel ban." "After 2:30 p.m and you're on the road, we will arrest you @NYPDChiefofDept says," NYPD says. "Stay off the road, @NYPDChiefofDept says. We don't want to have to arrest you." After 2:30 p.m and you're on the road, we will arrest you @NYPDChiefofDept says— NYPD NEWS (@NYPDnews) January 23, 2016 "We are asking people to make good common sense decisions. Use your head," @NYPDChiefofDept says.

Actually, this is a good example of what happens when mortals think that their lives are more important than Mother Nature's intentions. It's a friggen' blizzard.........stay home !!!! "No......I have important things to do." At which point, the government has to step in to protect them from themselves. Because..................STUPID LIVES MATTER.
(Sorry....I couldn't resist that last shot.)

I can see both of you guys' points. I never ceased to be amazed at how many people just suddenly found shit to do when the roads went to shit due to ice or snow. Almost like they had to go out and prove they could still drive in harrowing conditions. A guy is free to do what he wants, when he wants, until it puts the lives of others at risk. And, when you get the bright idea to go out when you should be at home, and you have an accident or something happens that means LEO's firefighters or EMS has to come save your stupid ass, you have then selfishly and stupidly risked the lives of all those responders, because you're a dumbass. I will tell you an example of how that idea is driven home. Try standing in the passing lane of a major interstate highway in total whiteout conditions extricating a guy from his wrecked car while other cars are flying past you no more than 15 feet away at 60+ mph. I once saw a Fire Captain get dragged down the highway when a car flew by so close that it snagged his turnout coat. That left a mark.
Last month when that country music star and his buddy got killed duck hunting, I kinda pissed off young Matt, my old pard, who is a big waterfowler now, when I remarked on FB that Darwin had pretty much been right. Play stupid games, get stupid prizes. Go duck hunting in an ice storm and 50 mph winds in a boat and yes, you're ass is gonna die. Don't act surprised when it happens.

Ain't buying it, Lance. People pull stupid shit every fucking day and they get wrote up for violating the law, not for bad judgement, or as you might say; being stupid.
So, you want to give a guy extra credit? like using a firearm in the commission of crime, tack on five years, and being stupid, another five on top of that? Catch your patio on fire while deep frying the turkey, there's an App for that!
Beating on your bitch, while black? Free pass.

I don't agree with taking away a man's liberty for going out in a snow storm as much as I'm saying I wish more people would think about how their actions impact those who have to clean up their messes for them when foreseeable things go predictably bad.
The so-called "crime" can be something as benign as the teen that goes "muddin'" down a county road after drenching rainfall and a deputy is waiting at the other end to write him for damage to property because the township doesn't have the extra money to keep rebuilding roads that are torn up by young folks out having a little fun.
At the other extreme is the guy that goes hunting even though the forecast says he'll die. When he doesn't show up, legions of searchers are sent out and thousands of dollars are spent going out, finding him, and bringing him back. Sometimes, that guy gets hit with a bill for his stupidity, and the purpose of that is to discourage others from being stupid if they don't wanna risk paying that bill (just in case the risk of dying isn't enough to discourage them).
Can't pay the bill? Go to jail. Learn the easy way or the hard way, but the rest of the community shouldn't carry the financial burden of someone being an irresponsible, chronic dumbass.
My guess is that the officials requesting that order are trying to limit the amount of time their personnel are forced to unnecessarily be in harm's way from the storm, and preventing the damage being out there does to expensive equipment bought, repaired, and paid for with tax dollars. Conversely, I'm not necessarily sold that the marshal law concept is simply a power play, and I'm more black helicopter than most.

In this case, I don't disagree with that move.
You guys need to appreciate the logistical nightmare that ensures when 24-30" of snow falls in the city & suburbs, all at the same time! Millions and millions of people, millions of vehicles, and thousands and thousands of miles of roadways that need plowing. The only sensible & logical way to attack the plowing issue is to "lock it down", and let the municipal plows do their thing...
Places less populated don't have 1% of the headache when a big snow hits. Happens up at the farm in Cenrtal NY snow belt all winter long, and never makes news headlines, either. Wait for the plows to blast the highways clear, and continue on with Life...
I woke up yesterday to 27" of snow here. Dug out my sister's place, then headed off to the shop. Thanks to the travel ban and all night plowing, the highways were clear as a bell! Secondary roads were marginally OK, and tertiary roads barely passable in 4wd. The only way that was possible was to keep "joe moron and his dumbazz soccer mom wife" off the road & safe from getting stranded. It only takes ONE stranded vehicle to fuck up the plow's flow & schedule...
Took me 5 hrs to dig out the shop with a Cat938k FEL. No where to put the snow, so our block now looks like a friggin' ice fortress with 15ft high walls...
Then, me & Pokey hit the woods and pitchpoled it around the trails. The snow had settled quite a bit by then, was like trudging thru a big bowl a oatmeal!!!

Its a nautical term, but...
For this intent & purpose, its walking in ballz-deep snow without the aid of snowshoes!
Every step is a "pitchpole" into ungroomed snow. Shit gets tiring, fast!

I think that's New Yawk for "romping in the snow"?
Hey Fred, I mean, seriously, can you distinguish between a Chris Christy accent and a Giuliani? Bernie Sanders?
Do you know any "Good Fellas"? Where, exactly IS Hoffa buried?
Sorry, Fred. You have gone a long ways to erase our concept of people from New York. Like when Cruz "stepped in it" talking about New York values.
The thing is, be that as it may, they still keep electing Como and Clinton and De Blasio and Bloomberg, etc. (says the guy from Liberal Land where we elect Pelosi and Boxer and Fairy Jerry)
I heard a Kalifornia Democrat is advancing a state Bill that would outlaw ALL semi automatic firearms. How's that for progressive socialism? And, I doubt this lawmaker could accurately define the word? But, at least we have not arrested anybody lately for concealing a flintlock in their glovebox! lol

The marshal law bullshit don't cut it here. They can close roads without declaring "marshal law". They just come on the radio and say "hey, it's a blizzard, the roads are closed." And there is still quite a bit of leniency. If a rancher is trying to get to some cows to feed he's going to chain up and go. Nobody is going to bother him. I have ran into town on a snowmobile before to get a few things while the roads were closed. Now I have tracks for my Can-Am Commander. Way better than a snowmobile.

Tracks on the UTV = awesomeness!
Post holing here, too. But doesn't apply to fresh snow, either. When it gets a crust that you can step on, put your weigh on that foot for just a fraction of a second, the crash through. That's post holing. And it sucks.

One more for "postholing" ...no crust to break through required.
I've still got 35" of snow in my yard, after the final few hours of super fine dust snow blew off, and a day of "melting".
Ironically... they're fining people for driving (up north), but suspending the fines for not shoveling your sidewalk (here). *Yes they will fine you, in many counties, if your walks are not clear within a couple hours of the snow stopping.
Beyond that, I'm already not thrilled to live in a townhouse, with a Home Owners Assoc. (HOA), speaking of no place to put the snow, but this is how they did me.
That's my truck, with the huge pile of snow mashed into the tailgate, and 10 or 11 of my neighbors in the same boat (*though to a lesser degree). I won't be going anywhere for a week or so, in my truck, unless they bring in heavy equipment. Thanks plow guy!

No seriously though, sorta like the Trapper's Association it was better, for me, to be involved. And, other than hiring this guy, this isn't their doing.

Yeah, I was in a Home Owners Assn. when I lived in WAsh. No problems until a couple of micro-managing neo-Nazis got on the Board. It wasn't pretty. Never again.

You aren't in Mesa anymore, I take it? Since when, did they get picky?
My wife was in the habit of volunteering my services to needy divorcées and widows. (as a handyman, get your mind out of the gutter)
This woman bought a very fancy glass and aluminum addition on the back of her home, which wasn't a condo but still the association had very strict rules.
I could have run EMT or even rigid under the eves and nobody would have seen it, but NO. As in; nothing showing on the outside of house.
The alternative was crawling in several blind chambers in the attic just to get a 15 amp circuit for wall plugs.
I said I really couldn't get to it right now. Her permanent solution was a couple extension cords. Fine with me!
I never cured my wife of this particular habit, and it was annoying. "FREE HANDYMAN, INQUIRE WITHIN"
Good hunting. El Bee

I just happened to think of this. Just about every year, sometimes more than once, we have a really bad storm out here.
This causes the Media to go freakin' nuts, some young cunt is standing in the elements, maybe on a pier or atop a cliff somewhere. And they go "live" with all the drama of nature's fury.
So, regular as clockwork, next story is rescuing some idiot trapped in a flood control channel. This brings out the fire department with ropes and tackle stationed at bridges downstream trying to snag this idiot being swept away. Serious resources are spent.
Now, I don't know other places, but our flood control channels are pretty well protected, you have to climb fences to stand on the levee and watch the muddy water go by. Think of the movies, teenagers having races in the L.A. River, which is dry most of the year.
Not once have I heard about Martial Law ordering people away from these concrete rivers, or of fines and arrests, if they do....something stupid. I always wonder, how the fuck did somebody manage to get into this mess? It takes deliberate effort, yet I have never seen the time, on the news where they say the idiot was pulled out of the water and arrested.
This is not a freak event. Happens all the time.
I am all for advising the citizens to stay off the unplowed highways. It's the threats that offend me. Maybe I'm wrong but do people have liberty and freedom to be stupid?
