I lived in SE Alaska for 15 years. My home was only a couple of miles from the Mendenhall glacier. When we flew up to Skagway and Haines Junction we flew past the Rainbow glacier and there were lots of other glaciers around, too. I was fortunate enough to see glaciers calve many times.
I don't know what glacier they're talking about but the ones I saw haven't retreated any 9 miles. Yes, they have retreated but not all that far.
I never felt any kind of "horror" while watching a glacier calve.
