How do you prefer to carry extra ammo while calling...if at all? Do you simply load up the rifle/shotgun to capacity and call it good? Shell holders on the rifle/shotgun? A bag of some kind? What?

Im talking about a daytime walk out and sit stand. I personally cant get away from stock mounted ammo carriers. Its just second nature for me, and I can reload pretty fast, which is important to me. I have ran low or out to many times not to carry extra. Sometimes I get pulled far away from the truck following up multiples, bad shots or other opportunities.

Just curious what others do on a consistent basis.

I've always used a shell holder on my rifle stock. Rifle holds 5 and my shell holder holds 9 and I have yet to run out before getting back to the truck after some long walk-a-bouts.

This thread outs me as OCD, I ALWAYS have three in the rifle, that is one chambered and two down in the magazine, and always five in my right front pants pocket. With out this ritual, I just KNOW I'll have bad luck.

I tried one of those stock shell holders on the shotgun but it moved the balance point too far back and just didn't point point or swing right for me. Anyone is welcome to it if I can find it. For the centerfire rifles I use the previous mentioned technique of the right front pocket although exact number is not important, I grab a handful and stuff them in my pocket. I found that the Riggs carpenter jeans have stout pockets and are a rip stop material so barb wire holes tend to stay small. I carry a 3'-4' piece of parachute cord to lift the bottom wire up on fences so I can crawl under where there is no gate or shaky fence posts.

Rifle has DBM, I run a 5rd AICS magazine. Could run a 10, but I don't see the need (for me) But, I do carry a 2nd full 5rd mag a kydex mag holder, on my belt...

Not that sending more than 5 rounds happens even at all (for me) on stand, mind you! Rather, I carry spare mag, same as when shooting a precision rifle match, where timed stages & mag changes are a matter of course. Some stages work mag changes in as requirements of completion.

If I do happen to send more than 3rds on stand, I'll just do a quick mag change and know I've got anther 5 rds ready to send, instead of the two remaining. Again, a rare occurance, just making best use of available tools.

A variation, I usually load the magazine, whatever it will take, at least starting out. If it holds 4 or 5 and I fire one, next stand, I may not replace it. But, my MoJo ritual is 3 rounds in my back pocket, if I have one. I know, it might seem uncomfortable sitting on them, but I don't seem to notice, for some reason? This is in direct counter to my attitude about a wallet. I always carry it in the right rear pocket but take it out as soon as I climb in the truck and it's because I think sitting on a damned wallet is pure torture!

Personally, I CANNOT STAND THOSE FRIGGIN' AMMO HOLDERS on the stock! Never had one, never used one and never will. As far as I'm concerned, that's Rambo stuff. I apologize to those that think they are great, and useful, etc. But, I don't want that shit hanging on my rifle. Period.

Good hunting. El Bee

Yeah I’ve got the “Rambo” ammo holders on my stocks. Holds 9 and zips closed. Then I usually have 4 in the clip 1 in the Barrel with my CZ, and 3 in the Magazine 1 in the Barrel with my 700...... seems to work for me.

Years of working on fire trucks and ambulances got me in an unbreakable habit of always stowing gear in the same place, every time. I don't even own a 10-round or smaller mag for my AR so I have a 20-round in the gun, and a 20-round in my right breast pocket. Cell phone in left breast pocket. Drags in right lower leg pocket. stow my wallet in the truck as soon as I get out of the house because I belly crawled once to drop a female that had been stalking newborn calves and my shooter came along behind me fifteen minutes later with my wallet in his hand having found it where it had fallen from my rear pocket. I fill magazine(s) before I leave the shop and it's very rare that I go through a full mag in a week let alone a day. With that said, I have a gearbag with my e-caller shit where I carry 10-15 10-round stripper clips and a charger for refilling. A place for everything, and everything in its place.

Edit: AR's are built for the purpose of hanging shit on your gun. I have an angled forearm handgrip on my handguard because the damned things are so awkward to hold otherwise. Used to have a Harris on there, Even have a laser and light for it. All kinds of toys to "accessorize" with.

Lance, I can't imagine a 20 round magazine in my right breast pocket! I can't imagine the purpose? Okay, Okay, I guess it's harmless. If you want to call hunting coyotes with an AR, harmless?

I thought that the 20 round AR magazines were supposed to be taped together, one up, one down. ???? [Confused]

Hello, Rambo?

edit: Actually, I vastly prefer 20 round mags to 30 round. I don't own any that are shorter but have a couple that have a plug to restrict the number of rounds they will hold.

about taping the magazines together. What drives me nuts about that one is how a bump can dislodge a couple or the main thing is all the dirt and crud that would lodge in the exposed cartridges and then you try to quickly switch and jamb your gun. But, it's cool!

You know, I'm not sure about Iraq and Afghanistan, but in Viet Nam, those troops just off the plane, when issued a firearm, had no means of sighting it in and it didn't even occur to most of them, they assumed it would shoot where they aimed, in the unlikely event that they felt like aiming.

I never hunt big game or coyotes without assuring myself that I'm zeroed. We used to talk about a battlefield setting, something we would commit to memory, so many clicks up and right or left. I guess when in a war situation, there's little time for stuff like that?

Sitting on a wallet over a prolonged period can actually lead to lower back problems. Plus, you're more susceptible to gettin' a pocket picked. Just sayin...

LB, I actually carry that 20r magazine and a red plastic M&Ms tube full of .22LR for the 6-shooter on my hip in that pocket. Bear in mind, I broke myself of "spray and pray" a long time ago. My AR is pretty much a well-appointed single shot as far as hunting goes. As I said, the ammo I have on my person is enough to last me a weekend or two and that's with killing several coyotes.

Case in point. End of this season, got a call from one of my landowners that I didn't even call this year. Had a calf killed in his calf lot and had bumped the coyote out of there two mornings in a row. Could I help a fella out? Hell yeah.

Now, this was a high-pressure situation for me because these guys graduated from the same high school as me six years before and smack dab between us is a guy who has been Wildlife Services for quite a few years. Used to be in Oregon, did some time in Idaho and got assigned to the Aleutian Islands in Alaska once to kill foxes. He has a couple of my PREDATR Calls and loves them. Anyway, that guy is in Nebraska now and he's always been good for a beer or ten with these landowners when back in the area. I kinda felt I'd better produce results because, good or bad, Mike was gonna hear about how I did.

First evening out, I'm setting up where I bet the coyotes are staying and I call in a nice big tom bobcat. Send pics to Mike because I called it on his old home place. Turns out he'd been aerial gunning in NE Colorado that afternoon and had gotten 49 coyotes in 4 hours. He's wins the bragging rights.

Go back out the next morning and call that same pasture. 15 minutes in, a large pale male comes in at my 3 oclock. Just as I drop the trigger on my AR, aiming right at the center of his throat, he turns toward the caller and I catch him on the point of the left shoulder. Down he goes. Up he comes, leg spinning like a broken second hand. Autoloader comes in handy as he beats feet right to left at about 60 yards. Shoot four more times. Hit him again with 1, 2 is a miss, 3 is a hit and 4 anchors him. Tough bastard. The load I'm using is a routine 1-shot, 1-kill round so wow.

Move across I-70 to the same drainage, just 1/2 mile north as the crow flies. Hadn't been calling much more than 30 seconds and a pair come out of the cedars. Front one is tracking to my left toward the caller while number 2 is straight out. I swing left and smoke #1 at about 40 yards. 2 bugs out first running to the left. Shoot and miss. Turns him to the right. Shoot and miss. Turns to go straight away. Thanks, buddy. One thru the back of its head. Both males.

That's been 6 weeks ago. Those guys calved another 48 babies without so much as seeing or hearing a coyote anywhere near their two calving lots. Last I heard, they texted me and told me I'd done "a hell of a job" and "thanks!!!". Hope they told Mike the same. Still didn't need that backup magazine.

Earlier in the season, got three coyotes out of four that showed. In four shots. In less than five seconds. I can't do that with a bolt gun.

Good times

Boy, did I get an email from, He Who Shall Not Be Named, this morning! I didn't know what the hell he was talking about exactly, but figured out Lance must be involved when I got to the last line that mentioned something about a 20 round mag in his front pocket. And now Lance thinks I AM stirring shit! With this pair to draw to, they don't need any help from me.

Yeah, those quick followup shots. That's what I was thinking when I bought that AR 20 years ago. Except, I was using match bullets that my 220Swift didn't like and at 223 velocities, they didn't kill for shit, and right away, I saw the value of those quick followup shots. When a coyote starts fussing, it takes a lot to cool his jets. Keep up the good work, Lance!

(just kidding, Buddy)

Bolt rifle is a Tikka so I carry a spare magazine in my chest pouch, same when I carry the AR except the spare mag is in the pack. The shotgun has a mag tube extension and I just load it till its full. 8 rounds has never failed me on a single stand so far. I can always hope it does!

Yeah, that's like my wish on every hunt. I hope I run out of ammo! Has never happened, but I came close one time when I decided to crimp a box, for some unknown reason, and found out later, they wouldn't chamber. Still managed to not run out.

I tend to carry more ammo than I'll likely make go bang; BUT ……………….. I can always bring unfired rounds to the next stand. If I don't carry enough though, I can only sit and look stupid holding an empty gun with a coyote standing out in front of me. [Eek!]
