As the owner operator of a small auto shop, I just came across some interesting info. I had this customer come in with a dead AC and an extended warranty card. Funny thing is all he ever received is the warranty card which is tip #1. Tip #2 was when I called the company; the company didn't cover hardly anything normally covered. Tip #3 was after I googled the companies name and place of business, Extended Warranty Corp of St. Paul, MO. Google is the best tool in the world. This company and the several dozen other names the same people operate under all have a solid F rating from the local BBB. Tip #4 is the fact that they operate in or near St. Louis, MO.
Check this out: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23147777/
Here is a quote from the above link: "Complaints pour in The bulk of the companies doing this are located near St. Louis. The Better Business Bureau of Eastern Missouri and Southern Illinois lists 92 extended warranty companies in that area. They are responsible for a huge number of complaints from across the country."
First off, I don't recommend buying extended warranties. If you simply put the money away that the warranty cost, you will be money ahead. If you do buy on, google the company's name with BBB to find their rating and check to see how long they have been in business. These sleazy operators pop up as new businesses almost monthly. You can also google the make, model and year of a vehicle with a code word like problems or reliability to get an idea if the vehicle you are considering has any known issues. You can also be more specific such as "Chrysler 2.7 engine problems" or "GM Dexcool Problems". Google these two searches and you will be surprised at what you will find.
Hope you find this info valuable someday.

+1 on warranty ripoffs. My extended warranty was sold to me by the dealer at their cost - about 975 bucks. Since getting the truck I'm in now, I've spent at least twice that for them and they've paid every time, but they cover stuff like the control switch for the defroster and the window motors, but refused to cover the belt tension assemblies, O2 sensors, and currently, the cat.
On a related note, I found this site several years ago and find the accountings of real people sharing their experiences about cars is generally a great place to start because it has been spot on for me...

That warranty you are writing about reminds me of when the wife and I were once looking at a newer car, and the warranty coverage they tried to sell us did not cover the stuff that broke. Being in the business I could identify that contract as useless.
