It was originally started by Jeff Mock of Tucson, AZ. I'm sure he would like all the help he can get on this petition.

Dan, what did the AZG&F guy tell us at the APC meeting a few months ago about the passing of a night hunting regulation? I do nto remember the details but it didn't sound too hopeful. I signed regardless.
Problem would be if we could night hunt I'd have no reason to go home.

He said he was against it. It was his position it would promote and or cause poaching, you know, like flies cause garbage. I didn't make an issue of it at that time, as he was a guest of the club. Otherwise, I would have torn his ass up over that statement. The fish cops in AZ are day workers, and don't want anything going on at night that might cause them to have to work at night, you know when the real poachers are at work and the fish cop are home with mama.
I honestly think if it was legalized if would have to be policed and therein lies the rub with the fish cops. [ September 09, 2008, 09:55 PM: Message edited by: Dan Carey ]

I can see Game & Fish's concerns regarding poaching. However, allowing night hunting by law abiding types would also put more eyes (and cellphones) in the field to report poaching in real time.
One thing that the Dept. might consider would be to install a 'call in line' for the different districts. ".......Uh, Hi; This is Kokopelli, I'll be hunting unit ## tonight from a blue Toyota pick-up license ####### . Thanx." Now, if the warden wants to look me up & check me out; fine. If he gets a report of gunshots in that unit, he knows somebody's hunting coyotes. Or if he wants to ignore it while letting me think that I'm being closely monitored, that's fine too.

It's all bullshit.
Look, I have been hunting at night since 1968, and I have never seen anybody poaching. I came across a scene that was probably cattle rustling, once, but all the raving about poachers, poachers, poachers! is completely unfounded.
Okay, maybe there is some law that poachers poach after dark? But, seems to me they can poach during the day, as well? So, maybe we shouldn't allow hunting during the day, to stop poaching?
It is so easy to identify predator hunters at night, red light, stationary position rather than spotlighting while moving. And (I guess) poachers stick to known deer areas, while coyote hunters are in different areas....at least out here? FOR THE MOST PART.
No, fish and game has an attitude that sportsmen are potential poachers and if they have a chance to pot a deer out of season or whatever, they will do it. For me, I never wasted my time on deer while predator hunting. Might as well have range cattle out there, who cares? I work around them.
The ratio of legitimate night predator hunters to game thieves is so high as to be laughable. Their solution is like shutting down the Interstate because they wrote a ticket to some jerk doing 90 in a 65. Way over reaction, but that's it, they think they need to be out there supervising at night because that's the way they think. Next thing you know, I need to call them up and say I'm moving to Barstow in my blue Toyota because there's no action in Lucerne Valley. Then a couple hours later, I want to try over by Mitchell Caverns but F&G ain't answering the phone, just like last week. Hey, do I detect a pattern? Control freaks!
It's too easy to say NO.
Good hunting. LB

Hey Dan, can you build me a special AR just for night hunting, I could paint it day glow orange so I wouldn't misplace it when I sat it down to relieve myself.

Leonard, of course it's all bullshit. But.......until the Az. Game & Fish Dept. is comfortable with the concept of people out hunting at night, it aint gonna happen. We may have to jump thru some hoops to get to that point.

They will feel comfortable about it, if we make them feel very uncomfortable for not doing it. They will bend to the right pressure. The worst thing that can happen is the naysayers won't help us.

As a general rule. "Wildlife Officers" are more concerned with what tree huggers want than what hunters want.

I would love to be able to have night hunting in Az.. Your right Dan the right type of pressure could make it happen, but until the right people are in charge not much will change. there are some azgfd folks that are all for it and there is always the lazy bastards that want nothing to change ever.we should also push to get shotguns legal for Mtn. lion. by the way i signed that petiton over a year ago Im # 365 on the list when the hell does it get turned in.

Another pet peeve of mine
Up until about 2 years ago they had reg that you had to use a 243(6mm) or better to take a lion.
They changed that. Not due to predator hunters calling cats. But because the houndsman compained that their clients didn't like big holes in lions shot at a few feet.
Can't use a electronic caller but you can run em with dogs up a tree
Explain that rule to me

Dan, correct me if I'm wrong but I remember an APC meeting a year ago when Mike Burris stood up and told us about the changing of the guard at AZG&F was going to open the door to the possible change of 2 regulations that would benefit predator hunting in AZ. Namely night predator hunting and allowing hunters to shoot a mountain lion with a shotgun. [ September 10, 2008, 08:21 PM: Message edited by: Scott F. ]

Hi guys,
I did start this petition about 3 yers ago to see if there was any interest in it. I belonged to PVCI and really had the itch to go night hunting, sooo, I made the petition online.
This pretition just re-surfaced a day ago when a guy emailed me and asked if he could post it on his hunting web site, and I told him he was more than welcome to.
Since then, about 24 hours ago, over 100 signature were added, so I decided to email AZ Game and Fish. I tried this last time, and they pretty much ignored me, and I pretty much expected the same from them this time.
To my surprise, I had 3 emails from them within a couple of hours, and I have since replied accordingly. They are going to have one of their people call me or email me to let me know exactly what needs to heppen to get a real petition going, as this "Online" petition really doesn't cut it.
Anyway, I just wanted you guys to know that any help would be appreciated. From what I can see, many of you have already been knee deep in the effort already.
Thanks for listening,
Jeff Mock Tucson Arizona

Believe it or not, this has a VERY good chance. Game and Fish has a new director and he is very pro predator control. I have been in contact with both Larry and the assistant director Ty Gray, and we are working on this and other issues right now. So keep it going and get as many as you can to sign it. Steve

MULE, Here's another one of my pet peeves. You are allowed to use electronic callers for bobcats but not mountain lions. Same season, same habitat.
So if your licenced for both, calling bobcats and a lion comes in, DON"T SHOOT or you could be in big trouble!?!?
Anyway, I've complained about this before here at HM but I think you were away on your hiatous. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

Near as I can tell, this is a rule that the COmmission has the ability to change. I could very well be wrong, but that is how it seems. I have also heard the the new commissioner is "Pro-Predator control".
I just started the petition to see if there was in fact an actual intrest in having the law changed.
For those of you that wuld like, I would be happy to post the letters I've written to them, and the departments responses.
They have even emailed me all of the necessary documents to fill out to petition the law be changed.
As far as the online petition is concerned, it's pretrty much worthless, (at least that is what they are telling me), to submit with the peition.
Anyway, I can post the letters if you all would like to see them.

Steve, if this is something you guys are in the middle of, I do not want to step on any toes. Please let me know if you guys are about ready to submit something, and if there is anything I can do to help on my end.
Again, if you would like to see the letters, I can either send them to you, or post them if you'd like.
