A co-worker & I were discussing a bum down the street with a cardboard sign standing next to a "We're Hiring" sign and pan-handlers in the parking lot in general.
My co-worker had what I thought was an absolutely brilliant response to the beggars; Wait until they shuffle up to you and before they can say anything, hold out your hand and ask "Spare change ?? Can you help me out ??"
Short, sharp & cuts deep.

Lest I seem heartless, there are Help Wanted signs posted all over our small town. Sadly, they expect people to 'work'.

Shit, I did that 25 years ago in San Francisco! This guy, unwashed and wearing an overcoat was sizing me up and I turned towards him 2 seconds before he could get a word out. It was mean, actually. He said he wasn't a Vet but he was on the bowling team. As we got on the Cable Car, my new friend gave us a friendly wave. I felt ashamed of myself. Just my luck, but these days, it's a completely different animal.

If you are looking for somebody to blame, I think it was Reagan that abolished the mental hospital system. People cannot be held against their will, or something like that and we have a phenomena never seen before: homeless and shitting on the sidewalk.

Well, who knew?

I could be wrong but I think that it was the American Civil Liberties Union that sued President Reaganus Maximus and forced him put the mental cases out on the streets.

Yes, of course. But he could have said NO! And look where we are now.

These people really are sick and shouldn't be out on the streets. Look at that kid in Florida that killed a bunch of kids at his high school. He was and is a lunatic and nobody had to balls to expel him from school and his idiot mother goes and buys him a friggin' assault rifle!

But the main thing is, they object to conformity, in the first place. They probably wouldn't mind a nice warm bed and decent meals, but they want bring their wine in the room and party with some skank and not make the bed. Cannot abide by rules so they would rather push a shopping cart with their shit.

I think they were far better off in those clean pajamas and free nutritious meals and all the TV they can handle. And maybe feed them a little Zoloft to keep them from going bizzerk.

True and true again.
However .......... It involves a slippery slope.
Who decides when a person needs to be committed to a hospital ?? Dr. Fauci ???
And where ya gonna draw the line ?? Need meds or need a padded room ??
Or why ?? .......... Mayhap put Pelosi in charge and have all of those dangerous right wing gun owners put in a 'special' facility. Probably can't happen but I used to know an old Jewish guy with a number tattooed on his arm and eyes that said more than he did.

Some of our beggars/panhandlers are getting more brazen. Some are reportedly opening car doors and reaching in. Seems only a matter of time before someone gets shot for attempting carjacking. That is a legal shoot here.

Dan, nice to see you!

ko ko, you make a very powerful argument, just who decides exactly who is a danger to themselves and or others? And it COULD BE a Fauci so point well taken. It that does not mean we are helpless, wring our hands, woe is me, it just means there will be safeguards.

"That is a legal shoot here."

Same here in ass backwards Kansas. Had a guy pulled a knife in front of a neighborhood WalMart down the road from me a couple years ago. started threatening people. Ended up being gunned down by four cops. No protests or crying. Had it coming.

I carry a 9mm at all times. Used to be all the time except for when I was at work at the PO. Retired on disability now, so I carry anytime I'm not at home, and most of the time when I am. It's hunting season, so most days I have a fully loaded AR15 within arms reach. Security cameras on my house that feed to my phone. As the joke goes, "what're you scared of?" Not a goddamned thing.

Sadly, Toto, even I'm not in "Kansas" anymore.
