Was cruising You Tube learning to make Flemish Twist bow-strings and somehow got side-tracked into improving ice chests.
Seems as though the cheap ice chests that I use tend to have hollow lids. Yeti's they ain't.
Long story less long; removed the lids, drilled 3/8 holes in the undersides of the lids, sprayed the area around the drilled holes with non-stick Pam and shot Great Stuff expanding foam into the holes. Tomorrow I'll clean up the excess foam, seal the holes and replace the lids.
Not sure how much of an improvement it will be but it should help some.

Will be waiting on report I have many of the cheap ice chests You know under 200 bucks ! and two right at 200 still no yeti . Last time Kelly came out he had some that were like yetis different brand don't remember the name they were awesome and he said they were actually affordable ! Maybe Fred Knows what they are ! I
can afford great stuff !

RTIC and Pelican coolers are a cheaper alternative to Yeti. I have a Pelican that was given to me by a company I do business with as a end of year promotion(so no telling what I actually gave for it). Also have an RTIC. They stay in work trucks. The best thing I can say about the injection molded coolers is that they are tough. They get abused. The insulation value is great, but it doesnt do much good when they are being opened constantly through out the day. Plus, the storage capacity is limited in relation to the over all size.
The best thing I have found for cold storage is the dense foam cooler they ship pharmaceuticals in. they will hold frozen food items for up to a week if you limit the amount of times you open them....plus, they are free.

Thanks Geordie Kelly had Rtic's and on the open and close just don't keep the bourbon in the ice chest !
I get my pet meds in those foam chests never had one arrive even close to warm !

There’s lots of strategy. For sure limit opening and closing so it’s a no brainer to keep your beer in a smaller separate cooler and after those 12 are gone, refill it quickly. Other than that maybe dry ice can help? I think I heard that almost all Walmart’s have dry ice but you have to ask.
The Germans drink piss warm beer. Yuck! But, am I missing something? What else needs to be kept cold?

Geordie mentioned RTIC. I have a couple of em, both hard & soft sided. They work just as well as any Yeti, and RTIC is currently having some pretty big Fathers Day discounts, according to my spam box!

What the fuck is, "RTIC"? Us shut in's don't watch GMA. That's network equiv. of FOX and Friends.
Anyway, the idea is that the lid of some ordinary coolers is hollow? So you squirt insulating foam into holes drilled in the underside? Way too technical for us seniors!

I guess I’m just a lazy ass. I broke down and bought the Yeti’s. I have 3 in different sizes. Used the shit out of them. Keeping shit cold is only part of it. They take a lot of abuse... I’ve had them fly off our side by side ATV at 30 mph. Just turned around went back and picked it up. Other than some pretty good scratches no worse for wear. Worth the price for me...

I've got a cheapy that keeps stuff cold. Has a small door inside the top lid which you open for beers, sodas, and not open the entire cooler.

You can fix the cooler to make them hold the cold. But remember it still has the cheap plastic on the outside.
We have went through a ton of cooler in the last 37 years.
We got into Yeti and have 5 or so of them. Yell at me all you want they work we like them. And that is that! ![[Razz]](tongue.gif)

About Yeti, they are top rate no doubt, but are they worth such a premium when there are so many clones to do a fair job, and I have no idea if they could survive being dropped out of a plane much better than Cabela's or Walmarts? I'm asking in the same vein as acknowledging that while Mercedes may be a very fine automobile, but in terns of getting from point A to point B, and for the price, a Hyundai is a reasonable alternative.

When we started buying there wasn't many others out there and we just kept with them.
The Cordova I think is the name is made in Nampa and I know the guy who is making the metal handles for them. If starting over I'd probably buy something else. We though we'd just stay with one brand and not worry about mixing up parts is it should come to it.
They are heavy sobs I know and when full real heavy. But they got us through a few weeks of tent camping one winter in AZ.

Well, that's another thing, I don't need a cooler that will keep my ice cream frozen solid for a week and a half.
I'm mostly a weekender, keep the beer cold and the butter from melting is all I ask. Therefore, I don't know if I need to spend $600 to do that, and then find a place for it, they do have a larger footprint, you know?
Bt, I guess, in terms of a lifetime investment, lots of reasons to pull the trigger.

I have no doubt that the Yeti & clone coolers are much better than my Colemans.
On the other hand, I'm fairly sure no one is going to go into my camp or the back of my truck when I'm out hunting and steal a cheap cooler, either.
The extra day or two of ice just isn't worth the worry of it walking off.

I'm pretty sure the Yeti folks have heard the stories because every one I have seen in the back of an open pick up is chained down. A 4 foot Yeti, in order to run off with it requires 2 men and a boy, if it's filled with ice. They have become a status symbol, for sure, something you pass down to the kids when you shuffle this mortal coil.

Flemish Twist bowstrings are something that look really cool and may or may not be better than the basic Endless Loop strings that I now make & use. They are made by cutting a string up into pieces and twisting (braiding) everything back together. Just something that I want to learn how to do. Like a lot of things, it's pretty simple once you know how to do it. Getting good at doing it, on the other hand ...……..
Rather than drinking anything with bitters, try mixing two shots of Rum Chata with two shots of Fireball over ice. A sundowner worthy of the Gods.
