Those helpful folks, (probably at PMS?) want to clean up the 'net. Read this email:

Time to pull the plug on this website. HM is an obsolete media tool with a very limited readership.

Please help us put HM out of its misery. Contact the administrator: nbosin@aol.com and kindly nudge him to take the site down.

Let's clean up the Net and work together by removing forum sites that just don't need to exist anymore.

Thanks for your consideration

Clean up the net? Some one is smokin' dope if they think they are "cleaning up the net" by starting here. Good God, there's plenty of nasty ass sites such as ANTIFA or BLM sites that would be a better served getting cleaned out first.
I think someone is trying to get a rise out of ya LB. Don't fall for the bait.

Initial thought: why the fuck do they care?

I think they know that I post every email they send, such as this one. Is HM a threat? I never considered it to be, maybe an alternative to the commercial aspects that I am opposed to? That would be PM. I mean shit, I pay for this stuff. You can say anything you want and not fear censorship. Where's the harm, the threat? I don't get it?

They are still assholes. Never changes.

How about a petition for anybody that uses the term 'yotemaster' to take a long walk on a short pier ?????

Sad that someone's life is so petty that the best that they can do is to come up with shit like this.
This asswipe must be a Democrat; He runs into something that he, in his righteousness does not approve of, and goes into the control mode.

Jim Renaud has been pushing for this move for some time now, looks like he's finally gained some support and traction from Mr. Bosin and others to accomplish this

What other predator hunting boards are still around?

There is here and PM that I know of for sure.

It seemed like 10 or more years ago there was a a number of them.

There was something called the midwest predator board. Foxpro had one. Something else called predator pro's? I never stuck around any of them long enough to see what was up.

Are any of them still around?

It seems like the era of predator boards has kinda died out?

Magazines seem to have slipped away also. I haven't bought a magazine of any sort in years.

I hear the entire outdoor industry is struggling right now...

Remember us hunters must stick together or the anti's will break us!!!! LOL!

All boards are dying off. Not just predator boards. The world has moved on. Lots of reasons for it.

One minor reason is that they are all trying to monetize their traffic. I for one am done with contributing quality content for some one else's profit. Fuck that.

Huntmasters is immune from that and I think that has contributed to it's staying power.

I'm sure there are plenty of tiny little predator boards I know nothing of. But it looks to me like PM and Huntmasters are pretty much all that is left.

If you look at quality not quantity HM more than holds it's own against PM. There are very few top hands that post on PM at all anymore and never get into anything meaty in even a little bit of depth. Don't blame them, neither do I. It's just not worth it,

We do occasionally get into some good conversations here with information being shared that I personally haven't seen anywhere else in years.

Only occasionally, I think most of us are just a bit intimidated by some of the really experienced guys and tend to hold back. But when we do delve in you get more straight talk from more experienced successful callers here than anywhere else on the net, in the world.

You ought to be proud Leonard. And you ought to stop giving these anonymous wankers any attention. It's what they want. The dipshit is probably just about coming himself over all this attention. Just ignore them and stop even acknowledging them. I wouldn't even open those emails, myself.

Ed is a good guy. Didn't ever get the credit he deserves in my opinion.

Him and Scott on calling with or into the wind was the most epic ongoing debate in the history of predator boards too. Those were the days!

You know, in a way, it's a shame more people aren't interested in night hunting, as pioneered in California. Be that as it may, if one were to seek information about night hunting, there is quite literally nowhere else, Internet or anywhere besides right here. And that forum is ignored. But, it's there.

Good hunting. El Bee

I have to say, night hunting is very poular... I see it all over the place. Night vision is super popular as is traditional light swinging. Lots of it happening, in different forms.

Yeah, I think there is a ton of night hunting going on. Back east, seems like a lot of those guys, are 100% night hunters. It has become legal in places it used to not be, like here in Utah for instance, where it has become the only way to put up any kind of numbers in places.

They are using a lot of technology that you never did though Leonard.

The little bit of night hunting I have done the last couple years, we don't use any lights whatsoever. Not for driving or retrieving and certainly not for scanning or shooting. It's too rich for my blood, but high end thermal is a real game changer in my opinion and limited experience. I can spot animals better, at night, with zero light, than I can during the day in bright sunlight. Almost like having a super power, at night. I have also been able to use some lower end, well, mid range really, not low end at all, thermal and it's not all that impressive to me, I found it much more difficult to spot and identify animals with. But the really high end gear, holy cow, that is neat!

For all the BS in this state, our night hunting laws are fairly acceptable. Caveat being, loaded firearms and vehicles are a MAJOR NO NO, at any time. Parked, moving, don't matter if it's got wheels, a loaded firearm cannot be in contact with it. Can't even lean a loaded firearm up against a dang wheelbarrow, let alone shoot from a specialized rig...

So, we're stuck to foot patrol. I've kinda sorta felt my way along, and have found some things that work for where I hunt at night. Can echo Dave, in that getting a thermal scope last season has been a friggin awesome upgrade! Being able to 'see' in total darkness is almost worth the price of admission, alone. And, the fact that ya can shoot thru this technology allows another level of 'excellent'!

My stuff is low/mid end, and I'd like to add a designed 'scanner' unit. But, for now, I'm standing behind a full sized tripod, with rifle attached, and panning/scanning thru thermal riflescope. A bit of a chore, but still worlds ahead of doing same, with an LED handtorch!

My night vision is all Russian, and used just enough to tell me it was no real solution. Yes, I know about those really cool $9,000 thermal scopes, but I have killed 22 coyotes in one night the old fashioned way. I am positive that using all the latest hi tech gear wouldn't help at all, maybe in isolated applications, limited territory, foot patrol like Fred talks about. But, it is cool.

The problem with night hunting is the unreasonable fear emanating from the regulatory wennies. They saddle you down with so many restrictions that have no actual basis, for instance, read again what Fred wrote about the loaded weapon laws, and yet, every swinging dick has a holstered 9mm in the friggin' glove box.

Good hunting. El Bee

edit: Oh! PS about predator message boards shutting down, not popular, etc. etc. My vote goes to FACEBOOK and FOXPRO for the double whammy. I had an instinct right off the bat and have never had a Facebook account. Control Freaks!
Anyway, when you have Facebook, who needs a message board? <shrug>

In my brief foray into facebook lately, I do see the value in it, but good god there is a lot of stupid people cluttering it all up. I joined several groups that I have interest in just to get a feel for it, and, like everything, there is good and bad.

I have to say that coming back to an actual board like this is a bit refreshing.

Seems like face book fosters short attention spans. Pithy posts that do not contain complete information, wading thru the dead bodies to get to the truth. Boards like this seem to encourage a more thought out, lengthy process when posting useful info, and a lot better conversation.

Instagram and Snapchat about the same.
Edit to say: Im like most guys my age I guess, one foot in and one foot out. I like old school shit but I cant ignore new shit for very long, just out of curiosity? But I do get bored pretty fast.

Have never been to a Facebook page. Never. Not once. Nor instagram, nor twitter or any other of that generation of social media.

Never. Been an obvious data grab since day one - it's where the power is (and hence the money).

And while I'd love to hear from and meet any kids I have out there that I don't know about, other than that, I can't think of one single good thing that could come from participating. I can think of plenty of things I'd rather not be part of though.

Have heard some interesting conversation lately about the status of data control. Some pretty smart people think control of data has surpassed control of land as the most important lever of power in the world. It's obvious that our gov't, the Russians and Chinese all believe so.

Well, as far as I'm concerned, the jury is out on all this hi tech bullshit, smartphones, Internet, Netflix, ALL OF IT. And, particularly Face book, that Zuckerberg twit is an evil little bastard.

Now, as far as something DAA wrote earlier:

quote:
One minor reason is that they are all trying to monetize their traffic. I for one am done with contributing quality content for some one else's profit. Fuck that.

Huntmasters is immune from that and I think that has contributed to it's staying power.

What he means is, Huntmasters accepts no ads whatsoever and never have. All members are encouraged, however, to advertise whatever they have, be it handcalls or maybe gunsmith, or hunting guide services. I haven't seen anything so far that would come close to being disapproved. That's for members only. I don't allow ads for Foxpro or Cabela's, for instance because that's where PMS made their big mistake and they allow the sponsors to call the shots. As I recall, their moderators would actively censor any talk about any other caller on the market. That's exactly what I mean, that shit will never happen here, and it's because I pay for everything and there is no committee, no moderators of any kind that must get their heads together to set policy. The buck stops here, and I'm pretty liberal in what is said and who can say it. Nobody buys me or controls me and the members know they can say what is on their mind and we always discuss it above board, no back channel private messages. All the dirty laundry gets aired out in the open, if I look bad, they will all see it, no cover ups, no editing. Well, there has been one or two things over the past 16 1/2 years, but believe me, I hate to do it and I dare PM to make the same claim. Regular as clockwork, PM comes over here and throws bombs. What the hell they are afraid of I don't know? We are just minding our own little business and they can kiss my ass. This little dustup is out of the blue, everybody can see what has transpired, and I have not responded directly to any of their emails, just post them here for everybody to see how chickenshit they are, and always have been.

Good hunting. El Bee

To give an idea of how insidious things are, I do not buy much mail order and/or online. However, I did today. To back up, I have these down comforters on my king size bed. I've been thinking about this all summer, I don't want to go another winter with either of them for my own reasons.

I want a conventional blanket, and not fleece, thank you. So, I got on line and wound up on Bed Bath and Beyond. Picked out an Eddie Bauer blanket and clicked on credit card payment and then Discover Card. They had my whole number, not just the last four digits. I don't know if my computer supplied this information but it sure looked like Bed, bath etc. had all my account details on file. Scary, and I blame Google. They own me and I am small potatoes, for sure. And I qualified for free shipping? Must be my handsome good looks?

Hate ordering on line but have done it.
Prefer talking and hearing a voice on the other end or face to face so I can read the facial expressions.
The world doesn't need to know where I'm at and what I'm doing.
The WWW could end tomorrow and I'd be a much happier person and the world wouldn't be at my door asking where the elk are at.
Or how many trappers/coyote callers are there.
E-scouting and boots on the ground are driving me up the wall.
I really don't like anyone under 40 and most people won't get off of their atv/utv and walk up a quarter mile to say hi. Have a locked gate below the lookout. Use to be 50 year olds would walk up but that is changing to 60 year olds now.

Boy, does that ever sound like JohnHenry!

But, you got a little bit further than I did. Bruce Kennedy, (who actually built the Coyote Gods website) wrote me the very night they opened the board and invited me to apply/register. The next day, he sheepishly wrote back and said when JH saw my application, he blew his stack and said; NO WAY! And, he was embarrassed and apologized, but I never got a password.

I've been mentally scarred ever since!

PS besides, I've never owned a 17, but like you and Tim, I did use Pat's 17 for most of two seasons. We mutually decided it didn't fit our style. Never looked back.

The cat's out of the bag! JohnHenry has always been a Liberal. Boo!

Just think about it. He hunts. Okay, some Democrats hunt. Besides that, he is not a gun guy, in any sense of the word. Seems like I remember that he left one of his rifles outside all winter in a wheelbarrow. I don't know how damaged it was, but it's not the way a true gun nut would treat a firearm. What else can we draw from this story? He's a bit of a phony about guns and animals and hunting, in general. The Coyote Gods was just a phase and now he's interested in something else. Who cares?

Seems like I heard that the man has been thrown out of some of the finest institutions of higher learning in the country. He was proud of it, true or not. Well, if he is self educated or however he acquired his expertise, he seems intelligent, a fair assessment, I think?

Anyway, we all wish him well in whatever he has pursued subsequent to his interest in predators and 17 caliber rifles. Maybe he will show up as a congressman from Pennsylvania? Stranger things have happened; look at Al Franken!

Good hunting. El Bee

Ole John-Henry caused a lot of good people to either leave or be banned over at CoyoteGods. Damn shame, 'cause there were some good guys over there.

I figured him at pushing 60 when cg was going and that was close to 15-18 years ago. Thought he might be dead now?

No, I don't think that's right. He was never as old as you might suspect. Of course, I don't know, it was never my day to watch him? But my guess is that he's probably about qualified to apply for social security, maybe 62-65? YES. That's old, to you whippersnappers! But, I'd guess he's still ambulatory, although could be crazy as a loon? Who knows?

Oh, his best buddy would know! What's he up to, Victor?

I had him pegged at maybe mid-70's or pushing 80 currently. That why I thought he might be dead now.

Leonard (HMFIC, you certainly have been [Wink] )
You have invested how many years into this board? As I recall it was shortly after Jim Struble left the field in 2000 that I acquired control and passed it on to you. I haven't been involved in years, but often check out the topics and comments without logging in. I've seen changes over time, mostly in the early years. Most current posters on the board don't have a clue who RayG might be.
You've done will and I don't think there is another medium that can replace what can be done on a board. Facebook won't hack it.
Since leaving CA I haven't done a lot of predator hunting. First in ND and now in western MT. However, I have drawn up plans and started assembling parts to install a hatch on my truck and start night calling this winter (just as soon as Elk season is closed)
I say Keep New Huntmasters open.

Great hearing from you, Ray! I knew about North Dakota but not Montana. Which is colder?

Ray is an old CSVCA member, from a different club, Riverside, I think?

I'll try to keep it going as long as there is value and it's appreciated. It's my "giving back" a gift to the sport, such as it is. Boy, they wouldn't believe the good old days, would they? No money involved, it was more important than that.

Down Memory Lane, one more time!

Start a new thread. tell us stories from the good old days. I suppose writing it down will give you cause to write another story down. Bits and pieces is all we really need. Stories are part of what makes this a great site. the banter is phenomenal too. let's hear some of those old hunting club stories!

Ever shot two coyotes with one shot?
Step on a snake at night time?
Ever have to spend the night because the truck broke?
I would be intrested in knowing more about how the club's work. I have always heard talk about them but I really don't understand how they worked I do know there was competition between clubs and such...

Thanks for the comments.

Danny, the original CVCA could really use a historian. I have stacked in the corner of my garage, two cardboard filing cabinets that contain all that is left of the documents and odds and ends correspondence going back to at least the 50's. I have the original large format checkbook, some of you may have seen before, looks more like a desk calendar. It's a piece of "memorabilia" all by itself. I also have some of the original animal figures that adorned the top of the various trophies, all in bubblewrap. It's a sad ending, that nobody cared enough to keep it going because of petty attitudes. Poor Gary Clevenger couldn't win anything, so he destroyed the club while everybody else stood around stroking their dick. I'm not upset, it's just sad.

edit: Yes to the two coyotes with one shot. That would be Steve Sundeen did it after a long time and a lot of patience.

edit: step on a snake, we all have probably come close, but I always had a fear for my son who would walk out to retrieve an animal in shorts. There are times that they are more active at night than in daytime, when it's not cold.

edit: Broke down? Seriously. I have stories that require chapters

I do remember when I and only one other guy that lived in Lompoc were the only callers in town that I knew of anyways. Now it seems every town has a contest. At least in Nevada anyways.
Broke down out in the middle of nowhere was always a long walk and if you were lucky some buckaroo doing fenceline would give you a lift.
And other hunters puzzled about why in the Hell would you want to waste time calling coyotes?
Could go on and on but things were a lot differant when I started calling back in 1962, a lot differant.

You got me walt! I had just been discharged in 1963. I bought a Circe jackrabbit call at The Archery Headquarters in North El Monte. On a weekend shortly thereafter, me and Richard drove up on the old Ridge Route above Castaic, in a place that has been underwater for probably 40 years now. The first thing we saw was a coyote skull in one of those deep canyons, then we had a bobcat cross the road on us. On the second or third stand, stood up and spooked a coyote. All done with 22's, BTW.
And, by the way, I was hooked. Never got over the sense of awe, to see an animal come to distress.

Of course, now they won't, since electronic machines have fucked everything up. But, for a while, coyotes came in on a string. I've killed my share and then some.

Down Memory Lane

Yup Leonard, I was with the Rebels. I suppose they earned that title before I joined up, but it certainly didn't end there.
I don't have a lot of that wonderful history you had with CSVCA as I joined after I retired from The Air Force in 88. Sure was fun though.
CSVCA seemed to start falling apart in the mid 90's and then it only took a couple years and it was closed up. However, all of the chapters remained active for a while after that. Riverside finally closed in 2011 when my company transferred me to North Dakota. In the club there were only a few left that were doing all the work for the benefit of the rest. When I left some drifted into other clubs like PCOC and National. I believe PCOC is still going but any of the others, ????
Back then everyone had a hunting rig with a hatch and night hunting was the primary calling method. The rigs had tape decks with speakers mounted under the truck, we used amber or red lights with flip levers to BURN-UM with white light, and ..... could go on and on I suppose.
Getting stuck for some was a frequent event. Flat tires was probably my worst enemy. At least once each season I cut a tire on rocks out in no mans land. Hmmm, wife wasn't happy when she saw the tire bills. One trip I cut two sidewalls, but was fortunate enough that I replaced the first before I went out to cut down the second.
I occasionally hear about the Memorial Hunt that sort of brought the clubs back together It got stated after Jim Struble passed on. I guess it is still going to happen in Dec or Jan, not sure.

Back in the early days, the purists in the club decided that tape decks should be banned, or at least vehicles checked to ensure no cheating. They didn't want to corrupt the sport. Using hand calls was not just preferred, it was the ONLY way. I remember when McKovich and Brookover wanted to join San Gabriel, coming from Orange County chapter. I first saw their names in Gun World Magazine about the California/Arizona hunt. Arizona never won that hunt, by the way. See why we need a Historian? So, the word on the street was that they used a tape deck! The horror! The horror! It was also known that they were killing a lot of animals. We allowed them to join. I hunted with both and learned a lot, killed my first animal with Rick, a kit fox, but it was kind of a big deal at the time. There have been many firsts.

Good hunting. El Bee

edit: looking back, to tell the damned truth, banning electronics would have been far better than the way it is, with the whole country saturated with the sound of fucking Foxpros!
