You got that one right for sure. We expect over 20,000 people to come to our little town on that weekend because it is right on the path. Just glad I live out of town and up on a mountain(?) so the family can at least enjoy it. should be spectacular viewing with my 12 inch telescope and little 4 inch sun scope.
BUT, a flustercluck it will be and no doubt about it.

Try and be on a mtn top in the shaded zone. Expecting hoards. Expecting to have to spend the night so I have a parking spot and protect the building. Also expecting some idiot to block the locked gate that says "NO PARKING". LOL
I'm not looking forward to this crap!! [Mad]

I guess if people find time to go to a protest, then they've also got time to go to the best place to few an eclipse? Good grief. Got better things to do with my time.

Well, you know, once you've seen one solar eclipse, you've pretty much seen them all. I witnessed one in Minnesota when I was 10 or eleven? I wouldn't go out of my way to see another, much less rig up some contraption to view it on some paper because I didn't have a welding lens. It's always the best most complete, greatest eclipse in our collective lifetime's. <yawn>

They hype solar and lunar and comets and they are all kind of ho hum, unless you are some type of astronomer? And, it's always that we won't see the next one until the year 2535, if man is still alive?

Good hunting. El Bee

I see a few weeks back that the governor of Oregon had gone off the rails by declaring a state of emergency and wanting the National Guard on hand for the massive influx of people...

Good grief, you'd think aliens were landing or something like that?

As for me, we're a bit north of the best view, but I'll probably take a look at the sky when its happening. I couldn't imagine traveling to see it though.

2004 was the Bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark expedition that traveled right through our area. The thought was tens of thousands of people were gonna be on the trails and roads to retrace the LC route and this was going to create traffic jams, stranded people, injuries, etc..

It was completely over-blown and not a damn thing out of the ordinary happened.

This really could be way overblown hype but one thing is for sure, getting a room at a hotel/motel is like getting one during NASCAR week in Vegas. All booked a year in advance. I do have to say though that a solar eclipse at totality is something to behold even if one isn't of the star gazer type. And a once in a lifetime event for most people.
I took my daughters out and made them look at Haley's comet when it came by some many years ago just so they could say they at least saw it. Even if I doubt they actually remember it. I may be wrong but they were pretty young back then.
Either way, hype or not, there should be an influx of people over that weekend to see what it's all about.

I'm with Walt an impact will be felt. Probably overhyped ? I think everyone is preparing for the worst & hoping for the best.

The problem we have is our valley gets narrow as you head north to the center of this thing. There will be congestion for sure. We just hope it's not as bad as they think it will be ?

I'm hoping and praying for wind, rain, hail lightning fog anything to discourage anyone and everyone from coming up. I can see major problems with city flatlanders coming up my road and tearing it up worse than it already is.
No One will be allowed up on the catwalk. So it should be a fun mess with that. Trying to do my job and keep people off. Urggggg!

I'm the jaded, odd man out, apparently?

As I see it, the space cadets are always promoting some spectacular event, once in a lifetime, whether it be an eclipse of the moon or any other heavenly body. And, shame on us if we don't witness this stupendous event!

I have performed my civic duty plenty times. They are always a letdown, slow to evolve and at the exact moment, they still fail to excite me. But, I'll do it again because of the promise, (or is it a threat?) that I won't see the exact same thing for another 800 years, if I'm lucky.

These people in the Astronomy vocations need to hype every celestial phenomena available, so that we ordinary schmucks appreciate these things as much as your average astrophysicist does.

I'm sorry. They never live up to the promotion, and I've witnessed quite a few. The movies do a much better job!

Good hunting. El Bee

PS I'm still waiting for that spectacular Perseus Meteor Shower. I did actually see one, while hunting about thirty years ago but it was purely an accident, I had other reasons to be up all night. And, it was as advertised, pretty cool.

edit: By the way, It will be coming up this month again. While hunting coyotes at night, it's a nice bonus.

You can watch all the lights of the night you want up here.
Only problem I've found I'm not a night person. So staying up to watch this stuff then trying to stay awake to work just doesn't seem to work for me.
I've seen more night sky coming and going out in the wee hours of the morning to check trap lines.

This was happened back in the 90's.
One of the most weird cool thing I've seen. One evening around 10p or so there was this shimmering greenish funnel shaped object in the sky. Some people from the office where driving in and they seen it too. Turned out to be a rocket burning up over the west coast. Coolest thing I've seen. Also several years ago right at twilight if you looked to the east you could see the space station being lite up by the sun/moon depending could really see it with binoculars. Most of the time I miss most of the night sky anymore.

Smoky as shit right now. Been this way 5-6 days ? It will be interesting to see when this blows over ?

Posted up a few no-trespassing signs today, probably not a bad idea anyway.

Next week or so just going to pick up a few extra things here & there, just in case.

It's getting to be the buzz around here for sure.

They say we might close for work that day. I would be real interested to observe my goats & cows when all this goes down ?

This is really a big deal in rural America? It's like the opening of the new Walmart.

I remember one time, I was hunting with my dad up in northwestern Nevada, Up by Gabbs, if you know where that is? I remember once we got a room at the hotel there, $5 a night, and if we had brought in enough beds, we could have slept a whole squad in that room....where was I?

Oh yeah, stopped by the deputy sheriff and he said, Wow, I stopped a couple guys from California last night, right here. And I said, were their names McGee? Yup. So, when we met up with father and son McGee back at Bishop, we told them we knew about them getting stopped by the sheriff, anyway, we won, I think we had three coyotes and they had two so they bought our breakfast. Now where was I?

Oh yeah, the actual big event that Saturday night was a light show in the western sky. We didn't know what it was until seeing it on the news when we got back home Sunday night. Where was I? Oh yeah, it was a rocket from Vandenburg, or is it Vandenberg? Whatever, it sure was a spectacular display, especially since it was a very dark new moon, I know this now as I type because we always hunt on a new moon. The reason is simple, with any amount of moonlight, the coyote can see you. Always hunt in the dark of the moon and you will be much more successful.

Good hunting. El Bee

I have been loosely planning to head up and check it out. But last night I decided to spend that weekend poking around ghost towns and old mines out in the desert instead. Maybe collect some coyote bounty.

Friends that live in Rock Springs (WY) were making it sound like a scheduled EMP attack or something. Said they are all expecting cell phones to stop working, gridlock on I-80, running out of gas at gas stations, running out of food at supermarkets etc. Said flea bag trucker girlfriend motel rooms are sold out at $300 a night. They aren't even that close to the totality, just on the way to it.

M'self, I was pretty confident I could leave here the day before, drive up to some empty BLM land right in the center of the path, pitch my tent, see the eclipse the next morning and immediately head home and not have much trouble of any kind with crowds or anything. I'd rather go see some new to me old mines and stuff instead though.

If I had a place in the eclipse path, I'd be advertising it as a viewing spot.

Just think, a Craigslist of Facebook add saying $50 per car (max 4 people per vehicle) and make it sound extra special by offering viewing glasses and all the lemonade they can drink for free! Register early to make sure you get a spot!

Shit as long as a guy is at it, selling $25 t-shirts with "Eclipse 2017; Where were you?" written on them might be a hit also.

Might as well make some bank on this deal because it ain't lasting long and doesn't happen every year. Just think of all the new rifles and optics a guy could buy! [Smile]

Here ya go. I am directly in the path of totality on our place here in Tennessee and would gladly charge you an arm and a leg to set up a tent on the lower 40 to watch the eclipse. Creek and 100 yard covered range for rent also . Think about how that would enhance my retirement check. But alas, I am probably too late to advertise such a great deal and cash in on that cash cow...LOL Our roads here are pretty narrow compared to what I am used to in the west so I really hope it isn't all the hype it is fortold to be. But our paper and friends tell us to gas up and get our groceries now because they expect it all to be gone in a week..Ahhh life in a rural community. And gas went up past $2.00 gallon also. Bet it gets higher in a week.

I'm still trying to figure out how you wound up in Tennessee, from that part of Nevada, of which I am familiar, and of which I highly approve. (coyote hunting ain't half bad, you know?)

Throwing a dart at a map?

I say that because I often ponder moving out of this crummy state. I think mostly Arizona and eastern Nevada and even Wyoming and a few others while ruling out granola Oregon and Washington, but, but, Tennessee never popped into my head. Am I missing something?

Leonard, what you ARE missing is humidity and bugs and you can't just wonder over yonder hill and go hunting anytime you feel like it. I miss that the most.Wide open spaces, no people and that sense of freedom open spaces give you.
It's a long story how I got here and really not too interesting but I am here and will no doubt die here. I just hope in another year I will be at least a little more accustomed to the humidity. They told me it was HOT in Lost Wages when I went there building casinos and they were right, well, it's humid and moist here like living on the coast of Oregon or Washington. But it is beautiful anyways and the coyote hunting is like in western Washington. They are here but seeing them is the hard part in this jungle before they down wind you.

Sounds like several groups came together and are going to close my road down the Friday before the eclipse. Totally in agreement. They are going to Stage 1 fire restrictions this coming Friday. No camp fires outside of campgrounds, no smoking outside of vehicle or bare dirt and so forth.
We are cotton dry and heavy fuel load right now.
Sneeze wrong or fart and you'll start a fire.
Now get all the snot noses back into school and things should slow down a little until all the hunts open and all the so called "Idaho Sportsman" start showing up.

Probably a damn fine idea to close the road. I'll be keeping a close eye out next week to see how things develop.

One road to my west is like I-84 today! It's none stop. Any shape, size color of vehicle you want it's going by.
Watched a lot drive up to the road closed sign then stop and finally turn around and leave.
It isn't Monday yet.
Friend @ Cascade said in town it was a zoo yesterday but the highway was a little slow. Thought maybe the Fair and the starting of school would slow them down.
I'm just living way to far back in the past. When we had a million less idiots living in this state.

I guess tomorrow you folks get your fifteen minutes?

Let me just ramble a bit with something not even a little similar.

Did anybody notice how the Left has been using RACISM as an all purpose weapon, more so now than even months ago?

Everything's "Racism" and this latest brainstorm involves Confederate Flags. Walmart quit selling them but still sells Nazi flags and Sickle and Hammer Soviet flags. Then there are the Che Geverra teeshirts.

So, what's next, why of course, it's statues! Robert E. Lee has to come down from where he has been for (what) 150 years? It's stupid but did you see how they are manipulated our young, dumb and full of cum Millennials? To see these kids kicking torn down statues just illustrates how easy it is to control "people". They are running around like they really understand what the Civil War was about. What's that? Why, RACISM, of course.

The most stupid lie that 80%, maybe more of America believes was the cause and the reason for WHITE AMERICANS to kill each other! If you stop and think about it for a minute, 30,000, maybe 40,000 troops at Gettysburg are lined up, and facing death and maiming right across the meadow, and they are fighting right now because of slavery?

I think they are fighting for State's Rights and the right to succeed from the Union. Whether it says so anywhere in any document, I have no idea, but the southern states believed they freely entered into this UNION and by God, they could just as quickly withdraw from this union if they felt that they were being treated unfairly.

Never mind that Lefties today think they can quit the United States in California, they can't do the math and see a relationship. The SOUTH was wrong because they had slaves and that's it! OH, AND RACIST !

What it is is stupidity. To see these kids demanding the Jefferson Memorial to be torn down because he had slaves and so did Washington so he should be condemned also. I don't think so. These were great men, even if they were white and owned slaves and the Left is wrong to attempt to rewrite history.

It's just a way to paralyze Trump and his administration. And, the MEDIA is promoting it as much as they can. They won't be happy until Trump is impeached. Someone, somewhere needs to stand up and scream that this bullshit is wrong and everybody is going to suffer if this shit continues.

That's what I think. We aren't far from ANARCHY folks. You know what they say; all it takes is for a few good men to do NOTHING.

Good hunting. El Bee

On the news the other night, they were talking about the influx of people into Oregon and all the issues that it might cause...

What struck me, was they interviewed a lady hired two years ago by the city of Madras, OR to promote the eclipse! She has been planning and promoting this for two friggen' years. Sounds like she might have done her job well if the mass crowds arrive?

On one hand, you got the Gov of OR calling out the troops for an emergency situation and on the other you got cities trying to cash in on the deal and promoting it. Seems kinda like the left hand doesn't know what the right is doing.

Uh oh! You people may be in for some well deserved criticism?

quote:
In the Atlantic, Alice Ristroph laments the path of the total solar eclipse:

On August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse will arrive mid-morning on the coast of Oregon. The moon’s shadow will be about 70 miles wide, and it will race across the country faster than the speed of sound, exiting the eastern seaboard shortly before 3 p.m. local time. It has been dubbed the Great American Eclipse, and along most of its path, there live almost no black people.

Now, what are you Racists going to do about it?

I was looking t the path for the eclipse and Atalanta, GA is in a good position for viewing so I think some black folks are going to get a good view.

I'm really getting fed up with the racist claims.

I saw some nitwit on TV talking about reparations. My view is this..... a whole lot of white folks fought a war and died to free these people. Who is going to pay back the families that lost fathers and sons in that war? Maybe we can call it a draw.

Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on August 21, 2017, 07:57 AM:

So, Moe. You really believe that all those white Union soldiers fought and died and were maimed, lost an arm or a leg or both because they felt so strongly about slavery? There were lots of "Abolitionists" that strongly felt that slavery was wrong, but the main reason they fought was because the South withdrew from the Union, and Lincoln didn't want to let them get away with it.

There were many issues, like the fact that the northern states had a substantial majority and could pass virtually any Bill that came up. All the South could do was vote "No" and lose. They had unequal representation because the representatives in Congress was determined by population and a Black only counted as 5/8ths of a person. They were never going to win on any issue, so they felt like they could form their own "Confederate States of America". Nothing in the fine print said that they could never withdraw? If there was such a thing, I don't know about it? Apparently, even now, California thinks they can withdraw from the Union, no harm done.

I agree that slavery was a huge issue. But was it THE issue? Right now, ask any man on the street and you will hear some tripe about "freeing the slaves". Brother against brother, father against son, willing to die, killed by cannon fire so the black man wold be free? Did white people "Love" blacks that much or did they pretty much not care one way or the other?

Right today, if the issue were to be re-argued, how many men would risk their lives to free ungrateful negroes? You wouldn't even get a fourth for Bridge! People would say, well, I voted for them, but I ain't going to join up and get kilt just to free the blacks....Fuck that!

Just think about it! What the hell was it, a million dead? I think it was by far the bloodiest war in our history? Something like 58,000 died in Vietnam, right? And, Slick Willy hides out in Canada. But, in the Civil War, I don't think people had a choice, an option? Everybody fought for their side. Not for or against the blacks, they fought for the SOUTH or for THE UNION.

I know I'm swimming upstream on this issue but freeing slaves might not have been what those guys were thinking, eyeball to eyeball on Pickett's Charge. Let's think about it and put yourself in their place, where most of them didn't own a slave, or that some of their best friends were black?

So, consider how the MEDIA tells us what to think. Even then. Gotta free those poor slaves; they get whipped every night! Too many issues where the main stream Media lies to us. Or, Obama says if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor. Did the Media question that statement?

Okay, you either believe this shit or you don't. I give up!

Good hunting. El Bee

Was a pretty neat eclipse here in Tellico Plains. Two and a half minutes of totality and we BBQed some pig and had a bash. Didn't bother going into town as I heard it was a zoo and I don't do people zoo's very well.
Leonard, I couldn't agree more with you on your asessment of the Civil(?) War. It wasn't about slaves it was about all of the above you have mentioned.
Watching the moons shadow gobble up the sun through the 12 incher was pretty neat and one I won't ever see again.

Thanks, Paul.

I did a term paper on the Civil War in college. Today and then, the average citizen doesn't have a clue about the reasons for war and how the North was taking extreme advantage of the southern states, in ways that were easily understood; Economics 101.

You know, Lincoln freed the slaves in the South via the Emancipation Proclamation. The North still had their slaves. Might have been a minor point, but at the time, nobody questioned his authority to do that.

Slaves were valuable property, for sure Jefferson thought so with the cute one he was banging. Do people go out and throw rocks at their new car, or any other valued property? I mean, everybody knows that these slaves were whipped and beaten on a daily basis, right? Just maybe, they were cared for as you would treat other things of value?

It's a very deep question, but consider this; are American Negros far better off than Africans, today? I really think that black people should consider themselves lucky to be here. Africans have a shit sandwich, in comparison. But statements like that will get white folks beaten to death with baseball bats while the Po Po will stand around and let it happen.

That Confederate Battle Flag meant something to southern people. In a way, it's like wearing your college sweatshirt. There is no valid reason for outlawing the damned flag! Southerners have eaten a lot of shit since the Civil War. Yeah, they lost but they still have pride in the cause, and the reason why they erect monuments.

The Lefties have convinced our low information citizens that it's okay to disrespect everything the South ever stood for, very much like NAZIS, only worse. It's all bullshit. They lost, but they deserve respect. When you lose a football game, the winning side doesn't cross the field and beat up the losers. Yet, they are still doing it 150 years after suffering a huge and bloody defeat, and they ain't ever going to live it down.... while these assholes trash their monuments.

This slavery issue is bogus. The country is doing everything possible to rectify everything, including bending over backwards, free stuff for black people, free money, free rent, free tuition, free food but it ain't enough. Reparations, maybe half a million each would quiet them down? No? Okay, make it a million and rich people can afford it. Tax the bastards. OK that million dollars is tax free, ain't it? Better be!

Until the Left quits agitating on all these social issues, the whole country is in deep trouble. It's disgusting. Trump might be a jerk, but he aint Clinton and thank God for that! Getting over Obama will take everything he can manage and the Left is going to fight him tooth and nail, hammer and Tong!

Somebody needs to step up to the plate and put an end to these bogus disruptions. You think the last Civil War was bloody? Just wait, this next one will be more better. Go ahead, keep agitating, Soros and Bloomberg! These two guys deserve to be hanging by their heels like Mussolini. And Obama and Clinton better hide out in St Barts 'til things cool off.

It's brewing up a storm. Somebody is going to be sorry. When you bring a gun to a baseball bat demonstration.

Good hunting. El Bee (end of rant)

Was in the 98% area. It effected my eyes for a while. It was a weird feeling big time.
300-400 cars went up the main local dirt road.
Then the second it was done is was a mass escape back out.
The cars were stopped from Hwy 44 back to a couple of miles from the turn off to the lookout. Took them over 2 hours or more to clear out.
NO fires thank goodness.
Most obeyed the road closed sign and those that didn't were sic'd on with the LEO. They didn't like it maybe next time they'll think twice. I doubt it. They seem to think signs are someone else not them.

Yup, it was a weird feeling. It got quiet @ work & was able to slip out for quick looks.

Was outside when the temp dropped. got cool & the total eclipse came. It was awesome !! everything was @ a standstill in my surrounding's. Spooky almost ?

I would like to do over again. Knowing, what, I know now. Wouldn't drive cross country though.

Traffic wasn't really an issue around here ?

Your spot on Leonard. Ive asked my grand kids and other young people, what they think the civil was fought for, every one has answered, to free the slaves. That's what they are taught, and just repeat it, not having read anything about it.
Slavery was one of the factors, but certainly not the main reason. States rights, voting inequities, taxation, and northern hunger for cotton, which was in its time, like oil is now. The Confederacy was a legitimate government, with their own president and associated governing body.
Facts don't have feelings; but seems today, feelings trump facts.
I'd bet a C note, you could randomly ask a hundred people why we fought the Civil war, and to a man/woman, they would say to free slaves?

Sunday night, my job cancelled for Monday. So I called my guys and gave them the day off and told the wifey "let's wake up early and drive 4 hrs. North to witness the big event." Not only did it look cool in the glasses, but was really cool watching it get darker and darker, temperature dropped 20 degrees or so, then got night time dark for about 2 and a 1/2 minutes. Then it got light and warm again!! It really was cool!! Just before the total lights out, it looked like mirage heat waves moving around on the ground all around us. It was faint shadows but the moved around like heat mirage. It truly was a once in a lifetime experience. WAY COOLER THAN WE EXPECTED!!!

Koko had it right. Farmers were getting $30-$50 to park your car on their dirt for less than 3 minutes!! LOL

P.S.
I would know better Vic, my kids too. We home schooled our kids and weren't subject to the same public school agendas. But that is a great point!!
