Since this site seems to have more than it's far share of mature peoples on it.
Any have a torn labrum?
If so what have you done to keep the pain down?

No clue what that is, but I take morphine sulphate for my spinal stenosis. Hard to find a better solution.

Yeah, torn cartliege(sp?) of the hip.
I may get there yet but need to keep a clear head, still to young to retire(just tired all the time).
I've also have spine problems. It was all the P.T. training to build the core muscles up that caused the torn labrum(sp?)

What's the doctor say ? or is he stingy about dishing out meds ?

Don't know exactly what it is but when I tore the ligament's in my ankle, rest, ice, compression and elevation (rice) was the only prescription I got. Took about 2 weeks before I could stand on it unsupported but the ice and rest helped more than anything. It can't heal while you're trying to live like it never happened, you'll just keep tearing it as it tries to heal.

6 weeks later I was running again.

You might also look at a sports medicine doc, fancy chiropractors but they might help.

A good orthopedic specialist that works on athletes has been a good help for me on my knee issues and foot issues. "My guy" was referred to me by several people and he's the main doc for the K-State football team so I thought WTF. He's been great. The tear may not heal as a lot of those cartilage injuries simply don't. What I like about my doc is he doesn't like to do surgery until it's the last option, but he's straight up with me about which treatments are going to get me going fastest and with the least amount of disruption to my work and life.

For example, the second time I tore the cartilage ion my left knee, the first dr I had gave me a shot, did an MRI and told me he didn't see anything. I was in excruciating pain and my knee would not support weight. He told me to learn to live with it because "that's just your knee".

Bullshit!

Went to my current guy. HE did an MRI that day. Nothing remarkable. Gave me a shot and told me to call him within 3 days if I wasn't feeling better. At three days, I wasn't, so I did. He asked me to come in so I drove the hour to his office. he checked me out and said that since my knee wasn't supposed to hurt like that, he thought he should get inside and take a look around. Found the cartilage on BOTH SIDES torn to hell. Cleaned it up and it hasn't bothered me in nearly 3 years.

My wife fell and injured her shoulder on the ice. Her dr sent her to my first orthopod. Same thing with her as with me. MRI didn't show anything so he assumed there wasn't an injury. Called my guy. he got her in, did an MRi and it didn't show anything. He gave her a shot, same deal. Three days later she was still in a lot of pain and still all swelled up. Called him and he told her to come in. Said same thing, you shouldn't hurt this much and we should get in there and look around. Post-op we learned that two MRI's missed a torn ligament, damaged bursa, torn rotator cuff and a small muscle tear.

Moral to the story? Treat the patient, not the technology.

I would start there. If a good orthopod says steroid shots or physical therapy or bed rest or surgery, he's probably steering you the right direction.

I've seen a specialist. They did do a nerve block and it lasted a month, felt great while it worked.
Now I eat tramadol pain pills like candy and use a lot of ice. But kind of hard to get the ice into the crease of the hip/groin area. It's also shooting pain into the top of the buttocks and down the to the knee and into the shin. It's the pain that never quits that is wearing me down. Can only sit for so long and stand for so long and can never get comfortable at work(fire lookout).
My regular MD is working on possible another MRI with the dye. I had also pulled the groin muscles into the inner thigh in May. Maybe I should just wack everything off and grow another body.lol
Already have a new knee 5 years ago and it went great. Just need back surgery and shoulder surgery and now hip surgery. Waiting on a new doctor to arrive that just does aurthorscopic (sp?) surgery he's suppose to arrive in Aug/Sept into Boise. Just going to be a long couple of months.

Posted by Cdog911 (Member # 7) on July 10, 2015, 05:44 PM:

I've had everything fixed arthroscopically for some time now. Much better than going all in. Tramadol doesn't do much for me but for those it helps, it helps a lot.

My orthopod is just keeping me together to put off that total knee. I'm hoping I can keep it working until stem cell therapy becomes affordable for regular people. A bunch of years ago, they developed a new treatment where they can repair damaged cartilage and synovial tissue by drawing out bone marrow and using that to cultivate your own stem cells in a lab. When that's ready to go, they go in with a scope and clean up any torn and feathered cartilage, followed by injecting the stem cell cultures into the area of the damage. Those stem cells then go in, recognize the trauma and damage and go to work rebuilding what was removed until you end up with a normal cartilage, just like new. used to have to go to KC to even talk to anyone about that. Now they have a privately owned center in Manhattan, Ks - less than an hour away - that does this, but insurance doesn't cover it yet.

Good luck with all that, earthwalker. Sounds like you are one tough hombre.

I use to be tough. Think I'm losing ground now a days. Doc says I'm fairly tough to endure this kind of pain.
My husband likes to tease me and calls me a wimp but he knows better.
Have a great day gents.

Boy, you know more than me LB.

Yeah that indeed might be a cool job ? Two years ago we climbed up to the top, of a lookout tower. I think it's called Carey Dome ? Rode our 4-wheelers up there. (edit) got a tour actually from a real nice guy. His wife had just got there when we did. Fantastic views of the Seven Devils Mountains and such. Really cool !!

It was out of Burgdorf Idaho.

What kind of rifle? What ya want me to shoot?
Deer use to use a Weatherby .270, now shoot a Tikka T3 .243. Elk the .270 or a 308. Coyotes 22.250, Tikka T3 .204,R-15 .204, .223. Bears I like my old 30.30 lever action. Shotguns .20 ga,12 ga. going backwards now getting back into .410s.

I wish I was miles away from the world. Urban lookout.
My cousin worked Carey Dome many many moons ago.
Family is from Warren came there in the 30's.

And yes I'm a gal, LB new that.

Can you give us a first name to call you by ?

I wish, I could get my gal's into hunting and shooting. Yeah, I've tried. I'll tell ya though they get pretty damn feisty when it comes to anti hunters though. They will get up into somebody's grille real quick !!

I'm normally a desert guy. Owyhee-Malheur-Harney county. We rode into Warren as kinda mentioned two years ago, and went down to the north fork ? I think of the Salmon river.

Had a beer and burger in Warren. 1st time, I'd been there.

How about Dee or Blondie.

I've spent the last 33 years on the ION desert.
You've probably cussed the trapper down there as we've cussed the callers. lol

It's the South Fork of the Salmon. Spent a lot of summers on the Hettenger(Sp?) ranch. Friends use to operate the ranch and their daughter and I paled around together. They were like my second family. Sure miss those days. The family and friends are all gone now, just the memories remain.

EarthBabe; Did you ever longline with a fur buyer around French Glenn ??
I think his name was Driscol ?? Drove a white pick-up.

Not with Driscol or Fenchglen
From ID border to McDermit 3 corners to almost the Steens.
Other half is on another lookout out in the Owyhees he is yet to see a coyote in his travels coming and going. Local came up yesterday from JV and he's out and about on the ODOT crew he's yet to see a coyote pup out in the hay fields. Also his wife is saying the same thing. Been 10 years now since the coyote population crash and it isn't getting better. Another very lean year.

White truck? We've drove a lot of different white pickup over the years.

Interesting. I've been whining about the coyote population here for years now.

Yeah your right it's been lean about 10 years now. A guy on another board from Mountain Home say's parvo went thru 'em.

I used to see coyotes in the fields just right down the road from my house here in town.

Dee do you think the Wolves moving in have anything to do with it ?

Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on July 12, 2015, 06:52 AM:

Yeah, I was thinking along the same lines; to describe somebody based on their driving a white pick up?

You know what I have always called Phoenix? "The Land of the White Pick Up" but it applies basically to the entire state of Arizona.....and they don't know how to drive. (I just made that part up)

But really, it's like a twist on Henry Ford's comment, they can have any color they want, as long as it's WHITE.

Okay, I'm done.

My wife picks the vehicle colors with my only input being that mine can't be black. But even that I don't fight too much so my daily driver is black.

But if it were up to me they would all be white.

Had a small tear in shoulder labrum many years ago still acts up if I push it too hard. Hurts like hell.

WHITE TRUCKS are COOL!

It isn't parvo. It was something that killed the old and young and left the 3-5 yr old's or the core of the population. It's some kind of a parasite but no one has really figured it out.
No wolves in that corner YET. It's all diease (sp?) related on top of 1.5 million acres burnt 10 years ago. Drought prolonged, major loss of prey animals. The perfect storm down there actually all over the west is seeing the same thing on animal populations. Then Vale burnt another 13k acre fire just south of JV last week or so.

Lets see.... mild frontal dislocation Rt shoulder 15 years ago. Scoped 4 times.
Rt knee scoped a couple of times finally had a new knee put in 5 years ago.
Need back surgery, spine L5 sliding off the S1 towards the belly button.
Now hip problems.
It sucks to get old.

Listen, simply voicing the observation that the city of Phoenix is obviously infected with white pickups does not prove that I hate all pickup trucks that are white. It's not a crime. I think it's amusing, at most; a uniformity thing, and notice, they are all jacked up, and all have oversized tires with aggressive tread.

It's a proven fact that out of the 700,000 white pickups on the road today, in America, over a half a million are in Phoenix. (I just made that up too; but prove me wrong)

I've owned a blue pick-up and am now driving a red one. I guess the next one will need to be white just to keep the color scheme going.

Actually, white is `supposed` to be cooler in the summer sun down here. Not sure I believe it; metal too hot to touch is too hot to touch no matter what color it is.

Posted by DanS (Member # 316) on July 12, 2015, 07:33 PM:

Seriously, I believe that.

I know white reflects heat and black absorbs it. I used to have one of those funny gadgets that was a t-shape cross gizmo inside a glass jar. One side black and the opposite side white. The sun would make it spin, the t-shaped thing that is.

Also look at solar panels.

Posted by Kokopelli (Member # 633) on July 13, 2015, 02:21 AM:

No doubt; lighter colors reflect heat and the darker ones absorb heat.
But...........by that reasoning, the chrome door handle should REALLY reflect heat and be cool to the touch on a summer day in Tucson. Or not.

[Eek!]

Best thing to do.........Sleep during the day & BBQ out on the patio at 3:00 in the morning with a cold beverage and it doesn't matter what color the truck is in the dark.

[Smile]

Wind chimes playing a tune in the light breeze.........Check
Coyotes howling off in the wash......Check.
Lightening flashing of in the distance......Check.
Hot links are about done........Check.
Life is good.

We really need to settle this. Is white cooler, or not? Fuck Tucson, what about Phoenix Valley? Good point about chrome door handles, how do the natives open their doors? I know they all have remote start to automatically engage the refrigeration; it's little tricks like that, that make the climate bearable. That, and BBQing at 3 A.M, when it finally cools off. Just remember, it's a dry heat.

I remember being stranded at the Howard Johnson's @ Sky Harbor one time because the pilots didn't have a setting for takeoff at 123 degrees. And, that's a true story. Cut one day out of a Club Med vacation, for which they refunded $300, in credit. One more time: 123 degrees!

Good hunting. El Bee

PS $300 doesn't go very far when drinks served in pineapples, with an umbrella cost ten bucks each. I think?

Posted by DAA (Member # 11) on July 13, 2015, 07:25 AM:

My opinion, yes, white trucks stay cooler. Have owned a couple white ones, blue ones, red ones, silver ones, a green one and a black one, that I can remember. Just trucks, not counting Jeeps or cars.

I do think the white helps. And I do think black is the worst.

White is also the easiest to keep looking good, it hides dirt and scratches better than any other color, in my opinion. With, again, black being the worst for showing every dirt speck and spider web scratch.

Have had one silver truck and my Jeep is silver, it's not as good as white, but a helluva lot better than black or red or blue, for staying cool and hiding imperfections, in my opinion. Not that I'd ever actually choose silver, I'd always choose white. But my Wife has chosen silver for me a couple of times [Big Grin] .

Okay, white stays cooler reflex some heat. Dark colored interiors draw heat. But the worst thing to have is a sun roof. It will just the inside up terribly.
I prefer white. Have 3 white trucks sitting in the yard. One 2wd toyota silver pickup.
Silver one of the worst colors to own as it is a special pigment and it will peel and discolor the fastest.
I've had red, blue truck even a yellow one and a orange one. I prefer white and tan type colors.
Won't own a black one period!
Prefer green or tan colored atvs. lol
Won't own a UTV and have two very bight yellow ski doo's snowmachines. lol

Any object is going to be at the ambient temperature at a minimum. If you put an object in the shade, and it is 95* outside that object is going to be 95. Now the blacktop out in the sun might be hot enough to fry an egg on.

Posted by Kokopelli (Member # 633) on July 13, 2015, 09:31 PM:

Sure........People have had flip-flops melted walking across parking lots here in Arizona.
Black absorbing infra-red and all of that.
But I can assure you that a chrome door handle in the sun is going to be hotter than ambient. A lot hotter.
The question is; Why ??

[Confused]

Posted by DanS (Member # 316) on July 14, 2015, 12:20 PM:

I meant ambient as a minimum. In direct sunlight it will gather or collect heat. White btw to my knowledge is not a real color, I have been informed that it is the absence of color.

Posted by Kokopelli (Member # 633) on July 14, 2015, 07:20 PM:

Not to be confrontational but actually white is the presence of all colors and black is the lack of color.

My Mentor in all things coyote & most things trivial has informed me that;

White is the presence of all colors IN LIGHT.
Ergo; Black is the lack of color IN THE ABESNCE OF LIGHT.
and
White is the lack of color IN PIGMENT.
Black is the presence of all colors IN PIGMENT.

Okay...

Back to the topic at hand, or in this case Miss E's hip... like someone else I've torn the labrum in my shoulder, both actually, at least once that I know of (*probably thrashed both my hips too, who knows)... a hard life hurts.
And again as already stated, "don't do that" if it hurts, stay off it when you can, and supplements for rebuilding (chondroitin/glucosamine, jello, and even chicken broth/fat/schmaltz, are recommended).

Back to the hijack;

First and foremost, let's not confuse light and the heat it can create, with radiation.

Beyond that, on the surface, we also have to consider the colors we see (*if we use the word colors to include black and white, in this context) as "visible light" perceived by the human eye (*and then we have to consider we, humans, may not even perceive colors the same way)...

What we see as light is part of a way broader spectrum of radiation. The chrome door handle reflects, or more correctly fails to absorb, most of the visible light we see but it still absorbs radiation that is converted to heat (*which is just another form of radiation, we can't see, but some animals can... but I digress).

**Theoretically, of course, there is no condition, outside of a black hole, where the energy that light is could be "absent" and even then, again theoretically, it's merely contained, but I'm not going to discuss that, here, now. [Smile]

So, back to the guts of the matter, what color your truck is has very little to do with "how hot it is" in the cab.
Windshield angles, insulation from the outside heat, amount of radiation absorbent materials inside (*remember metal dashboards) and outside, and the "reflective nature" of a particular vehicle (*how good a wax job it's sporting)... a well waxed white hood might reflect more light into the greenhouse that a cab is, than a dusty black truck parked right next to it would... and that light is then heating "invisible" air... wait no way, air absorbs heat from light? [Wink]

If you park any truck in the sun and it's warm outside the truck is going to be HOT... the bumper, the door handles, the seat, and even the windshield itself. Duh. [Razz]

Humidity doesn't f$@#ing help, but it's the not the heat it's the radiation.

Well.. the MRI didn't happen. Blood went crazy and it way to thin. Doc pulled off the warfrin for a few days and told me to start chowing down salads for the next 4 days. Just depends on your insurance. Mine isn't that great, but I've had two MRI's this year, first one cost me $400 and the second one cost me nothing, because I had already reached my family max out of pocket for the year ($2.5K per person, $10K whole family).

That reminds me of something the Media is studiously avoiding telling His subjects. That in addition to jacking the premiums every chance they get, you have to satisfy a significant amount of out of pocket expenses before you are entitled to any coverage. I'm drawing a blank on what it's called but, I have heard numbers like $6500 out of pocket before any insurance coverage. I am on Medicare so I'm not up on what Obamacare is doing to His people, but that sounds to me like no insurance at all, with premiums!

But, don't forget, those poor peeps that didn't have insurance before now have free insurance! Is this a great country or what?

El Bee;
Blood thinners, Warafin, Heperin, Plavix, etc. are anti-clotting meds when prescribed in small doses.
Warfarin in large doses is used for rat poison. [Eek!] Preventing clots and avoiding strokes & heart attacks is good. The bad part is the bleeding that won't stop from small cuts.
After I got my Stent, the Dr. had me on Plavix for 12 months. I was working a job where minor cuts on the hands were common. The procedure to stop bleeding was to spray the cut with an anti-clotting product, rub it with a Styptic Pencil, wipe it off and glue the cut shut with Crazy Glue.
I was glad when the 12 months were up.

I have good insurance.
Warfarin is the cheapest on the market. Doc wanted me to change to these new drugs but keep hearing horror stories.
I just blew it and didn't eat enough green things.

Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on July 19, 2015, 10:32 AM:

So, when you say you have thin blood, and are on blood thinners to prevent stroke, etc., you should eat greens? The reason you know this is because small cuts bleed for a longer than normal duration?

Glad we got that solved.

Good hunting. El Bee

PS, I bought some rat poison at Tractor Supply. It is in blocks about 4X8 and they are an inch thick. These roof rats that sneak into my garage steal them. I am amazed that an 8" rat can carry off a block that size!

LB, warfarin is to thin your blood to keep from getting more blood clots (Like me). Also helps if you have A-fib. You blood is suppose to be in the 2.5 range not to thin or to thick. Mine went to 5.7 in 3 days. My doc said he had heard of people being scenstive to lack of greens. I guess I'm one of them. All things green have vitimin K it for clotting blood. They won't do any surgeries or needles into you with that thin of blood. It's more of an internal bleeding thing. They took blood to do the test and I hardly bled at all. So more internal thing. Do a google search on what foods are high in vit. K and you'll be surprised.

Another thing. Not sure what this has to do with anything ?

Never ate a green salad in my life. Tried a few times and just can't do it ?

Might come back to haunt me ?

Went to my niece's wedding reception last night. Spent some time with one of her friends who is a pharmacist. We talked about Warfarin/coumadin or rat poison to some.

I'm on the stuff too.

I seem to recall the same thing?

The word was "unbelievable". I use it often when I find myself in a conversation with someone I peg as a bull shitter. It works well, because it takes on two different meanings in the conversation. I, use it as a literal word, meaning I don't believe a fucking thing the bull shitter is telling me. The bull shitter, believes Im using it in the "wow" sense of the word, and is tickled to death thinking I believe his yarn.

The contrast MRI is over with.
The only thing the tech would say is the hip looks angry. Oh boy.
Just sore now, will find out what is wrong in a day or so I hope.

It suddenly came to me, in bed, of all things when lots of other things should have been rolling around in my mind....

So I'm thinking back; was there ever a conversation with the afore mentioned Victor Carlson in which he made the comment:

UNBELIEVABLE!

That sneaky devil. Gotta watch him!

Good hunting. El Bee

Didn't get home in time to talk with the doc he left a message that there is a abnormality and it will need to be fixed.

Also seems to be my year for hurting my self.
I fell last night in the yard. Stepped in a hole with the left foot and the right leg has no support fell over faster than a falling tree like timber and and shoved the right breast back into the chest/ribs. Don't know if I broke a rib but sure sore and bruised feeling. I have to regressing back to being a toddler. Fall over at the sign of anything in my way.

Wow, you better be careful! Falling is painful, do as little of it as possible.

Truthfully, when walking in the back, I use a stick made from a rib of a saguaro cactus. Very handy and lite, especially going down the steps.

Good hunting. El Bee

Well nothing torn it's a crack in the femur head plus a lot of fluid in the joint and good ol' arthritis along with all of it.
Get to find out if I have cracked ribs or just deep bruising with the ribs today.

Got the news yesterday.
There is a term/word for it but can't remember it or even how to type it.
My femur head/ball is dying. There is a crack in the neck and a gouge in the top of the ball.
Doesn't really matter now.
Surgery Sept 29th.
Should be a fun month to get through. Lookout has 14 steps and they are fairly steep. I should have the steel railing totally rounded by then. lol
At least I now know and can get on with life after this. One more major surgery one of these days if the body will hold up. That is back surgery the spine is sliding off the pelvis. At times it is very painful.
