PS while they are raving about the "new" 9mm in +P+, and becoming reasonably familiar with the 40S&W, I'd kinda like to know why the hell they didn't go whole hog and select a Springfield XP in 10MM?

I wish I knew. It seems the army specified a "modular" system from the beginning so non-modular designs like Glock were out.
Was this planned from the beginning? Don't know for sure but the scuttlebut is flying.
My LE agency tested the P320 along side the Glock 19. During the torture test they melted the 320 down while the Glock kept chugging along.
This whole process and procurement makes me wonder (out loud).

And if you do some digging, as in looking what handgun the elite forces, SEALS etc carry....it's bound to be some flavor of customized 1911 platform, and you can bet it won't be chambered in 9mm. Makes one wonder why a semi-custom factory 1911, still wouldn't work for regular forces?

I have ALWAYS questioned the decision to drop the 45Auto in favor of a Beretta 9mm. Then, it takes them a couple wars over 20 years to conclude that the M9 just doesn't cut it? What did they say was spent in evaluation all the submissions before selecting the Sig? Was it $350 Million? I think so?
You can get an Ed Brown 1911 for three grand, but there are others, that don't cost that much, even the Delta Elite is getting renewed interest.
There are lot's of people that are died in the wool traditionalists and carry chopped and channeled 45's and "long slides" and I couldn't begin to count the number of variations available, whether you stick with 45ACP or 10mm.
Damn, it just doesn't seem all that complicated and yet these assholes have the nerve to buy a half a billion dollars worth of 9mm's, regardless of whether they are made by a Swiss company or made by an American company in America.
What exactly do they mean by "modular"? Is one of the specifications that it be striker fired or is that optional? Can we assume that they wouldn't buy a polymer handgun? How about alloy? Should the Service pistol be steel? I don't know if weight is a consideration, but for my money, I would prefer some kind of steel, exotic or nickel alloy of some kind.
With the numbers being talked about it seems they should be able to negotiate the cost down below 800/1000 per each?
All these "progressives" and friggin' Liberals have been trying to step on the 1911s windpipe for 100 years, but they still can't choke the life out of it.
You know the old story about the Army's problems in killing Philippine Muslims , (what else?) Tribesmen back in the 1890s and all the testing that determined a minimum of 45 caliber, as tested on live hogs, how did they manage to forget lessons learned?
