Been a big WT fan since the first time I seen one in use when I hunted with Scott H. And bought my first WT. shortly after. I bought the WT 2030 model which has put many coyotes out in front of the gun and never a issue with the caller till today. Waiting for a new switch and wire harness to come and in mean time decided to give a lucky duck Roughneck a try and should be here in a week. Some of my buddies here in Mn. been using lucky duck callers and they say the coyote vocals are pretty good so we will see how the sounds work and how well the caller handles the cold temp.s.

Waiting on that new caller and just got dumped on with snow, over 15" of the nice fluffy white stuff. The dam deer migrated over to a Herding area so now they out of the way and the dogs can run during the day without interruption and one less thing to look at when out calling. Folks it doesn't get no better than this.

You must be sick! Only in Minnesota do they say: “it don’t get any better than this”
when a blizzard dumps 15 inches of snow on the ground!

I think that the phrase "It don't get any better than this" when things are really crappy is code to keep Californicators from moving there.

They may be smarter than we thought.......... Eh?

ko ko, the national trend is from cold northern states, Of which Minneesota is one, to a bunch of southern states. There is no danger of that kind of movement, except for Obama's Somalians a few years back. Democrat president's do stupid things; always have, always will.

Hey we have our share of snowbirds. people from Florida, Texas, to name a few. I have a buddy from Mo. that brings his dogs up once a year to run coyotes in the snow, he says he likes it better here as he hates running them in mud all the time.

I've been saying since 1978, the first time I used my AR on coyotes. Ain't enough gun! It's been a safe queen for well, ever since! I thought I could punch a nice handling Model 700 for a daylight gun to Ackley, and yes, it was better, but still had a few runners. Why fight it, a 22-250 Ackley makes a damned nice coyote gun. Yeah, the various 17's work, and the 204 Ruger is ok too. But if you want dead right there, buy a 22-250 Ackley and you will never be disappointed.

The Lucky Duck roughneck showed up today. Nice little unit and takes a little getting used to. The remote pretty nice hope I can read screen in the dark without my reading glasses. Sounds ok and some pretty good vocals and prey distress sounds but the coyotes be the final judge on that. Remote pretty simple to operate as well as setting up hot buttons and favorites. Was out today as I plan to run the dogs but the coyotes have not adjusted to the deep snow and not moving much.

That video. 2 rather timid and incompetent female cops apprehending a bad guy. They are all the same, right? Reminds me of that female cop that thought she was entering her apartment on the 2nd floor, but instead walked into an identically placed apartment on the 3rd floor so she encountered a black male and promptly shot him! I never heard how that turned out, or if she was drunk or what. Anyway girl cops, it's my belief that they are very quick to reach for the weapon because they know that they can wrassle with a man.

edit: oh they Tazed him. Never mind!

Has it occurred to anybody that tazing somebody in the winter wearing a heavy coat might not be quite as effective as hitting somebody in the summer just wearing a t-shirt ????

Coat or no coat I thought the tazer worked pretty well.

Well I got a chance to use the new caller and called in and killed one. Oh boy I'm so excited. For the record it is a dam good caller, and I don't care what Lance says about them. I been calling in neg 5 temps up to 34 and caller works good, no need for heat pads like the fox pro's and screen has 3 light settings so I could adjust it so I could see it without glasses another big plus. Caller has a good selection of coyote vocals but they give funny names, so I have to listen to them and figure them out a little.
The problem I'm seeing is with the recorded sounds, they start out strong but fade in and out in the middle and back and if you don't have it at full gain or volume a coyote at 500 yards is not going to hear all of the sound, just parts of it like a coyote a mile away playing a WT at full volume, a coyote will only hear bits and pieces.
I tried the famous estrus chirp at 3 gain setting and almost full volume, the chirps came out nice and clear and loud but there is a growl added to the chirps and you can or should say I can just make it out. 500 yard coyote may never hear that so they could of left that out or at least kept it at same recorded volume when they edited the sound to begin with. Now I switched to the #4 gain setting and the growl is much louder and a coyote should hear it at 500 yards or I hope so. The sounds are not numbered so you have to learn to remember their names, can get a little confusing at times especially on a stand.
Have to also watch or test what sounds I play as #4 gain may distort other sounds and I may need to turn gain down a touch or two.
I played a few more sounds and same deal starts out good then fades in and out so I know I have to use a higher gain with them as well. I may just leave it on #4 gain and just turn the volume down if I need to, not sure yet. I do know the complete sound should of been recorded at same volume then there be no need for the gain button.
Take WT for example, there is no gain button and only with a very few sounds I have to just bump volume down one quick push or notch and the little distortion is gone, yeah its that simple. and all the sounds play at same volume no ups and down fading. With WT at moment, I just sit watch the coyotes come in and press few buttons without looking. The new caller I'm busy looking at a coyote and then the screen on remote to see what sound I need to switch to, find it then decide what Gain and volume I need to be at. It's not hard to change the gain, it's just one more thing you have to check at times. I also found out young coyotes are not that fussy about a sound even if it fades but its a different story when you up against a veteran, they don't like what they hear, or it does not get them excited then they not coming. Had that happen other night and it pissed me off, so I went to store next day got another set of rechargeable batteries for my WT for back up. More crap to drag along.

If I may add the caller has 3-4 presets for favorite sounds which I like but a lot of times you don't know what a coyote wants or needs to hear or how it behaves and none of the presets maybe the answer, so you have to look at remote and find another good sound to play to match that coyote. "I call it talking to them".
You got shy timid coyotes and you got mean aggressive coyotes and some that fall in between and just not sure of themself thus the need for other sounds. The new caller has those sounds just need to figure them out.

I like the E.L.K. yote buster. I found out I could mimic WT sounds with it. Randy Shaw caught on to that real quick at a calling contest. LOL

Seems like I heard from Krusty a while back and he's doing okay. Got legit, or something, moved around, stayed out of prison. Just kidding. He will blow in one day. He's a pretty good guy.

I was on a Yote Buster kick for a while. Used one in Southern Ore. & Northern Nev. with good results.
It had it's own unique sound. Then I noticed that the tip of the reed had spit rot or had gotten brittle and was all degraded or something.
Since it was a good call I ordered some replacement reeds and tossed the bad one. The call never sounded the same or seemed to work as well after that.
Possibly all in my head but lesson learned; If something works ...... DON'T FUK WITH IT !!!

You right koko those thin reeds didn't last long, mine would split also. Sometimes you just had to move the tone board back a little or forward to what you got accustomed to. I love how it sounds and the tunes you can play with it which made it hard to pick up another caller. I carried a AP-6 bite reed in my pocket also and bite down hard and give it all you got it would bring in some of those educated coyotes. or Mouse vole on the Wt worked just as well.

I checked the weather last night with a temp. of 23 and a 5 mph S-E wind, said to myself let's get to calling.

First stand I'm back to an area where I already got one coyote and now back after the other two. Called this spot twice already, second time in a pair of coyotes just wouldn't play, they just sit down and look for awhile then lost interest, so I let them walk off unmolested.
I set the gain to 4 on the caller so I could get the sound out there without the fading.
I started with guess what? Yep, the Estrus chirp #3 and played it for a few minutes at full volume.
Just like that I got a lone coyote coming in so I thought, it wasn't too excited from the sound, but I kept using it anyway as it would get him to come little closer. ( I expected this result)
I kept feeding him but he started to come out into a open field and move down wind which I expected also, he just wasn't excited enough. He was getting close to my down wind and seemed like he was way out there for a shot but I didn't have a choice. So I got him all lined up in the thermal and just waiting for him to stop. aaaah the coyote hit my scent and acted like he walked into a electric fence.
Off he goes back to the grove, so I hit a lone howl on my preset, and he stops to take a good look. I put the red dot on him and seemed to hold steady and it just felt right so I squeeze the trigger. Bang and then plop the coyote drops. I went and got the truck and turned it on the road so the headlights shined out in the field and so I could bounce the laser off of it to range the coyote. Walk going out not too bad as the snow was getting hard and I didn't have my snowshoes along.
Got to the coyote and checked out to see if any damage from the 52 gr. Berger H.p. , nope I was good there and then check to see what it was and turned out to be a male. I then ranged the shot which was 300 yards give or take and then stepped it off back to the truck and came up with 325 so we just call it 300. I wrote everything down in my logbook and noticed the time was 3:30 so it was roughly a 3 a.m. stand.
Decide to drive to another place and try to call some CRP. as I had a coyote I couldn't get to come in it locked up on me over 400 yards out and wouldn't come closer.
I parked the truck then walked over and set up on end of fence line and started calling using the estrus chirp with growls. I called for about half hour didn't see anything and was ready to pack it in so I made one more scan with the scope. Oh my there is was coming down fence line in the CRP and then I spot another coming down same fence line but on the south side of it in the field, The fence line was so drifted in it had like waves of snow drifts, you would see them then you wouldn't.
I sat and waited, nothing. I turn the caller back on and play the estrus chirp again and all of a sudden, I get a head popping up in the grass so I shoot, plop and down it goes behind dam drift. I reload and then start to scan for other but it was too late it was bobbing up and down in the CRP heading in opposite direction and no chance of a good shot.
Once again I go get the truck and shine lights out in the field and walk the fence line looking for a track where the one cut into the grass. I found one track but it looked kind of small and hard to make out, but I followed it into the grass anyway. I found it! It was a dam red fox it liked those estrus chirps but why would'nt it? Red fox always suckers for that type of sound, just high-pitched sound not much different than a vole mouse or bird. I ranged the shot at 150 for the fox taken at 5:00 a.m. with a 22-250 and 52 gr. Berger bullet. I hit the fox in head as that's all I had at the time to aim for. No fur damage.
The caller worked fine and the famous Estrus chirp worked which I knew it would but like said there are better choices, that get the coyotes more worked up or excited. I did have a issue with the remote, the pause and play joy stick sits out farther than the buttons and when you have it hanging around your neck or put in pocket the joystick gets bumped and turns the caller on when you don't want it to.
Starting to see a pattern as well but only have a small sample to go by. With my WT all the coyotes I called in come to roughly 100-150 yards for the shot. With rough neck they are holding out on me at 300 yards roughly or don't bother to even try to come in and I'm also calling repeated areas with the WT. Going to talk to few friends that use more than one brand of caller also and see if they are seeing same thing. I do know the higher gain really helps most of the sounds but have more testing to do as far as that goes. Good night

Went to bed early and woke up around midnight, the coyotes were calling me. LOL
I looked out bed-room window and saw that the fog finally lifted so I checked the weather on my phone.
7 mph S-w wind with temp of 7 but was supposed to go up as the night went. Perfect! Took a trip to a couple of big sections with CRP just few miles from my kennel, there has been a coyote around that area all winter and most everyone knows about it. This coyotes see's alot of pressure as there are so many out after it to prove their man hood by killing it, or bragging rights at local bar. The rattle-cans boys catch it out in open from time to time and just shoot at it even though its a half mile away trying to get it to come out of the big section or close to road for a kill shot. And then you got a few with snowmobiles that been trying to get it, but they have to tread lightly cause it's against the law to chase down wildlife. LOL And then we have the week-end callers most come from another town and don't even have permission to be there in first place and they stand next to the truck when they call. I see their pickup tracks where they pull off to the side or park on a field driveway and then get out and just stand there with tracks on both sides of the truck. I run these big sections with the dogs, but weather has not been right for them or someone pushed it to a area where dogs couldn't find its track.
The wind was right tonight so I thought I'd take a crack at it with the rough-neck caller. Started out with some yellow dog howls or whatever it's called and soon enough it came out of the crp about 3/8 of a mile out or little better.
I switched over to that silver bullet sound, you remember the sound they just can't resist. Coyote perked right up and started coming but not too me.
It stayed out at the 3/8 mile mark and then worked its way north till it got almost 1/2 mile south of my down wind and then cut to the west just a little then stopped. Not sure if it got my scent that far or just saw something it didn't like but anyway it turned around and went back the way it came which was ok as it was showing me where it likes to bed down for the day. I'll try the dogs later today or come back later with WT and try a few tricks and see what happens. First stand is always your best stand as your body and clothes are all warmed up yet and I sat for almost a hour with that coyote and was getting a chill. I made one more stand and called it a night, couldn't get rid of that chill and wind picked up to 12 mph. I bet some was thinking at beginning of story that I would call it in and kill it. LOL I wish but like said I knew what I was up against before I started. The coyote is also willing to show itself, so the game is not over yet. Until next time have a good day.

Sorry to report this conditioned coyote is now dead.
I got a break in the weather and found a track crossing the road coming from the section I last seen this coyote in. I had my top dogs along this hunt and took them to west side of a section that is 2 miles long and 2 miles wide, kind of l-shaped. casted the dogs in they cut through some CRP and checked it out for coyotes then took a drainage ditch east where the ditch converts back into a creek. More crp and willows in this area and could tell dogs was getting real birdie when they hit this spot. Then all of a sudden, the dogs start to light up one after another and I keep my eye on the drive-track screen. Now pay attention here the coyote or I should say coyotes is going to give out a secrete. Uno has jumped a coyote and taking it north and east, Tina, Max, and thor jump another coyote very close by and head southeast with it and then Marly she picks up her own coyote and goes South by south-west. Marly was moving pretty quick with her coyote so I stayed with her and went to south road and spotted her coming over a fence with her coyote heading for a active farm site.
I waited when she hit the grove, and nothing came out other side so figured the coyote holed up in there in a junk pile or something, so I called to her to come and loaded her up shortly. Mean time Uno has his coyote bayed up along the creek by himself.
Tina and her posse was headed for another active farm grove and this one I have to keep the dogs out of or they call the warden. Tina and her son thor were up front and got the coyote turned just as they got close to the grove and the coyote was now heading straight north for Uno location.
It turns out Uno has his coyote bayed up inside a nature made cavern or tunnel in the snow. What it was is a old grain elevator someone used to make a bridge out of to get across the creek for bird hunting. The thing is the creek drifted full of snow and peaked up on both sides of man-made bridge leaving a tunnel if you will under the bride. The tunnel had a entrances at each end, with one being big enough for me to get in close but not all the way. Back to Tina and her crew they still pushing the coyote north right into Uno's location and then the coyote and dogs disappeared in the creek channel. Soon a coyote comes out but runs back west and Tina and her crew stayed to help Uno with his coyote.
Houstin, we have a problem. The dogs have coyote bayed up over half mile away and the morning snowplow closed up the end of field driveway with more snow so I could get to them with the truck.
I had snowshoes along but know when the dogs have a coyote bayed up and it's still kicking after 1/2 hour there is a reason for it, and it usually requires tools to get them out or the coyote which is too much to pack in at my age. My trailer for my tracked side by side is snowed in, been that way all winter so I made a call to my son he was just getting off work and asked him to run home and get my snowmachine and bring it out.
I sat there and waited good hour and a half if not more, the dogs stayed on the coyote the whole time and held it there. Son finally arrives with snowmachine, so I load up a shovel, flashlights, my pistol, lariat and my hook. I got out to the dogs and found them with use of the tracker as I could only get so close to creek then had to walk in and then the dogs started to pop out of one of the entrances to say hello dad we got em. LOL
I sized up the situation and knew what I had to do, first I needed to get all the dogs out of the tunnel which won't be easy cause they been in it for too long as they developed more hate for the coyote and just won't leave it. I got two dogs caught up and hauled them back to truck and went back in again. Uno and Max were trying and really giving the coyote hell at times then the coyote would reverse the role and give each of them hell.
I got down inside the tunnel and saw what was going on, it wasn't a pretty site, and some would of blown their lunch when they would have looked in there. I got Uno and max calmed down enough so they would come out and then I would lay down and roll in front of them blocking the entrance to the tunnel so I was between them and the coyote. It was dark in there, so I got my light out of my coat pocket and pulled my revolver and started to make my way in crawling on my belly. I got a good look of the coyote up close and personal, and the coyote said hello when the light hit its face, or thought that's what it was saying. LOL (human logic) LOL
I said hello back and then crawled back out and let the dogs back in and walked over to my snowmachine and got Doctor hook. I had to use two extensions and got it done. Both dogs tore up a little bit so I doctored them best I could right there then load them and the coyote up and headed back to the truck. I had to struggle to get both inside the cab on the ATV but when I got to the truck, they liked it so much they wouldn't get out. LOL Tired, sore and happy dogs, it doesn't get any better than that. I had my son take atv up to a friends farm close by as I plan to be back after a few days or rest, got two more coyotes I need to talk to. [Big Grin]
