One of the things I immediately saw as a way to deal with all I've been through was to take the opportunity to go back to revisit some of the interests I had before I met Lisa and see if they could distract me or occupy my mind for now. One of the main ones has been trapping again.

Started out targeting two packs that were coming into Abilene and raising hell several nights each week. The problem became quite personal when I had three coyotes at my back gate several nights in a row threat barking my rat terriers, to the point that they refused to go outside after dark.

East of town, the pack closest to me, I immediately took down three including a very aggressive adult female. One day, I had a yearling male and a bobcat about fifty yards apart. Next day, I had a red fox in the trap that took the bobcat the day before.

West of town was "Lucky" Fuck, I hated Lucky. Hit that sumbitch 3 different times night hunting last year, every shot at 300 plus with my 22-250. The third and final time the meat report was like 2 planks slapping together. Didn't recover him. Had to be dead. My last day running 2 traps along the creek he used to enter and exit town, I had him by two front toes. BIG coyote, about 37 pounds. No teeth. Best guess was about 10 years old which blows my mind that a coyote can live that long here. While skinning, found a big calcified knot in his left foreleg about halfway between the wrist and shoulder. I'm guessing that's where that last whack hit him and he healed up fine. Was nasty and mean when I got there. Good riddance.

Had bought a half dozen fully modified Bridger #3's and managed to get pinched by my own thumb. Not up there where the gap in the offsets are. Oh hell no. Down where the jaw faces come together, below where the spring lever rests when fired. Trap was twin-pegged to the ground and I was pretty much fucked as I tried and tried to get the setter far enough onto that lever to depress it. Took me about three very long minutes. Still growing out the new thumbnail. My first thought was that I was headed to the ER for a crushed bone in my thumb. Nothing but the soft part, thankfully.

Have beat my old record of 8 bobcats and am at 14 right now. Two tried to kill me. When that super cold weather hit, I retrofitted everything with five feet chains and quick links to get away from driving stakes into frozen mud. Well, with the 18 inches of chain already on the trap, that gives each trap about 6+ feet of range, and just because you have 6 feet doesn't mean you have to give them 6 feet. LOL

I'd seen a big tom down in an oxbow. Calling hadn't produced so I put a couple traps down there. After thinning the coons and possums back, I go in one morning and there he is, by a hind foot. He vaults himself at a 45 degree angle into the air and, in slow motion, I'm thinking to myself that I sure hope that chain and trap hold. It did. He was right at 28 pounds.

Couple days and 1 coon later, I approach that set and I see a big chunk of rotted wood where the trap was bedded and I mistakenly approach thin
king someone had screwed with my set. Again, just because you can give them six feet...

Beyond the trap bed is a dead log lying on the ground. I failed to see the disrupted leaves and shit strung everywhere and I pretty much stepped right into the middle of the go-zone. This grey ball erupts from behind that log coming right at my face. I'm fucked, but I managed to reflexively lean back far enough that he hits the end of the chain about six inches short of making contact. I'm splattered with mud, debris and cat spit from what is one of the finest cats I've ever trapped. Slate gray back with dark, sharp spots, wide belly and tons of spots. Only about 19 pounds. It ran back behind the log and just glared at me as I thought, "Holy shit... holy shit!!!"

Caught a flying coyote.

I 'm old school and still prefer rebar stakes, twin pegged. I had one set at the end of a pond dam where I'd caught a double on coyotes and a nice 'cat in between and you didn't know if you had anything until you drove past the end of the dam and then, there it was, twenty feet away.

I rolled past the end of the dam and there it was. Average sized male. Had the main stake jacked about 12 inches out of the ground. Running round and round the stake with the swivel at the chain end, several times he leapt into the air which caused him to fly through the air around the stake at about four feet off the ground. One of those oh shit moments where, as much as I would have loved to get video, I grabbed the rifle and shot him down.

Haven't done as much calling this year as usual. Every day I've had skinning and fur to put up. Been sleeping good at night again finally. Been nice to be busy and not grieving everything. So many of my close friends have lost loved ones this year. Took one of them out the other day to give him some time away from all that. Called four - 2 singles and a pair - and I got 2. Y'all that don't think .223's and AR's will anchor coyotes. I disagree. All I use in the daytime now. Haven't lost one for years. Most are bang flops. 55g spitzers over 20.6g H4198. Knocks their dicks in the dirt with little to no fur damage. I'm killing them out to 300 yards with that load and I wouldn't be shooting them if they didn't work, as cheap as I am on spending money on ammo.

14 bobcats, 38 coyotes and 1 red fox and too many skunks, coons and possums to count.

Enjoy that Roughneck, Tim. I've been working with the inventor since day one, field testing and categorizing sounds. His coyote vocals are the real deal - no hand calls, all legitimate coyotes. Right now, Twisted Sister and Sniff It are hot at firing up resident coyotes. Makes me laugh every time I have one coming in hard to those squeaky chirps and how many people called me and Ronnie Robison fools for thinking we'd discovered something new in estrus chirps. They work, well. I'm wringing out my second Roughneck and a Super Revolt right now.

caller is ok so far and sounds their good selection if someone could figure out what they are and a little garbled at times which I don't care for, but they seem to least get coyotes interest. Have not seen a silver bullet yet. LOL Shelterbelt rabbit not bad sound! As for the estrus chirp its just that a chirp which coyotes use to communicate with, just another vocal that don't have much volume so little use to me. Example: years back at night I was calling a CRP field, had a pair of coyotes come in from another end. One coyote kind of coming up the middle and other along the edge of the grass, as they were approaching my stand about 500 yards out or little less, they would chirp back and forth at each other every so often. My guess is they was long distance fucking or just letting each other know where they were or excited. My dogs will chirp at times when they hit a fresh coyote track, or pick up on one they lost and when doing so the other dogs will hark in. or they just have a big gang bang when they should be tracking, not sure. Anyway, that's one sound I don't use on a stand and very very seldom use a pup distress since I have better choices that less threatening. But that's just me.

Rick has observed his his coyotes using the chirps any time they're excited or "happy" but it is much more prevalent during courtship/ breeding interactions. Too bad you're so set against using them. Three of the four I called this past Saturday were to breeding sounds. I was focused on cats but my buddy wanted to shoot coyotes and asked me if they were responding to any breeding sounds. I did Sniff It, then Estrus Chirps 1, then Evil Witches. Had a coyote standing in front of him at the 9 minute mark after it had crossed 350 yards of open field at a fast trot. Doesn't take much volume, they can hear it well past 500 yards quite easily. I encourage you to explore that particular group of sounds as it's most effective right now.

Garbled sounds? Check your ears. Rick goes to almost obsessive lengths to clarify and edit his sound library before offering it to the public. He asked me early on if he should edit out a lot of the grunts and wheezes in sounds like the jackrabbits and I told him to leave them. That's how real jack rabbits sound and cleaning them up is an almost certain "tell" that they're fake. It's very time consuming to edit out any background noise around those subtle sounds, and make the recording clean without any audible editing clicks, but he does it, and quite well.

I'm laughing here right now. Two days ago, you were all about how pleased you were with your new ecaller. I really struggled with whether I should reveal the role I've played in developing those calls and those sounds. I should have bet someone that as soon as you learned that I had some connection to them, they'd suddenly be riddled with flaws and shortcomings. I'd have made bank for sure. LOL

Shit, Leonard, I honestly tried. LMAO

(Pssst - not many know this, but a certain owner of a certain major e-caller company has tried and tried to talk Rick into selling him the rights to some of those Lucky Duck coyote vocals and he has declined, at any price. Must know something, eh?)

Developing sounds??? Now you got me laughing Lance. Whats it been 5 or 8 years since you first learned to use coyote vocals.
As for the sounds on my caller they start out good but then get all broken up and garbled, sounds like a old f-p caller. The caller itself is nice, the remote is nice and simple to use. I turn on my WT and I play a rabbit in distress I hear most if not all of it and its clear from start to finish. Not the same with the rough neck and thats why the bitch. Sure it still calls coyotes in but I'm not just looking to call any ol coyote in thats willing to play. I want the coyote that stands back and barks at the others not to go in, I want the one thats been called in before by another caller and got a little educated, and age has nothing to do with it as far as coyotes go, just cause its old don't mean its a difficult coyote to call. A vole mouse from a WT will do same job as a estrus chirp and more, it has volume and don't distort at full volume and it brings in some of the most difficult coyotes but first you have to set them up for the fall. Get my drift. LOL.

I'll be doing more work with the caller and give Rick a call and see WTF is up with the sounds.

As far as you helping Rick I could care less, nice try. On the high dollar caller why does it have a rotate feature? Who's idea was that?

Talked with some buddies that use a Lucky duck. The Gain control needs to be messed with, so I gave that a try. you turn remote on Gain automatically goes to 3. There are four settings 1-4 with 4 being loudest or most output. I picked out your famous estrus chirp. #3. The chirp sounds so nice if you set the gain on 2 or 4 but on 2 or 3 the growl is so faint or gabled why even bother to add it? Lance you ever sit inside a building with over 150 coyotes in there.? Next thing you know you going to tell us you invented fire or dirt. LOL I know you need to feel important, so I'll cut you little slack!

What the fuck is this? The New Housewives of Flyover Country?

You girls should concentrate on charm and group hugs!

It takes real talent to call coyotes with brake drum sounds. Any rookie that cheats with breeding sounds, needs an AR, that's for sure!

But seriously, Lance. You get 300 yard bang flops with your 223 and your excellent shot placement. What am I missing? All I know is; nobody out here bothers with AR's for coyotes.

Good hunting. El Bee

Plenty of AR guys out there Leonard on U-tube using the 223, Video's and pictures don't lie. All you can do is shake your head after seeing one of the clips. Plenty of Mag. dump action as well. LOL
Many of the die hards have switched to a 204 chambering on their AR's or some other wildcat chambering. The Noobs the only ones that haven't figured it out yet. Don't forget to give Lance credit he invented a special 300-yard AR load no one knows about till today.

He's just kidding ya, Lance. That's some good shootin'! I can't do it that's for sure. I've kilt coyotes with a 223, eventually, ya know when they are fussing and you have to lay a couple more into center mass. Other than that I only remember one time I had a one shot kill. But, I'm kind of a sloppy shooter with an AR. This was before flat tops, and sighting in at 50 meant that you were way off at 100. And zeroed at 100 meant you were way off at 50; and so it goes....I never could figure it out?

The man's a sociopath. Just look at him sittin' and spittin'. LOL What a troll.

The last long shot I took was about a month ago. My nephew and a buddy were up. Called in one to 150ish and my buddy missed it. A second one later came up on a pond dam in front of my nephew and me, gave him about 8 inches of hold over and dropped him. Ranged just under 300. Admittedly, I didn't kill him DRT. I looked at my nephew and said with a grin that I'm disabled so who wants to walk out there and get him. He raised his hand begrudginly When he got there, the coyote was halfway across the pond dam dog paddling because I'd broke his back.

Yeah, that shit didn't happen. But, it did. Sorry, dumbass Have witnesses for every single one you little fucktard T-T-T-Timmy. At least I don't need a goddamned dog to make me look good. And just because you can't figure out how to run a caller doesn't mean it isn't a good product. I've got pics but don't know how to sync the new sharing sites with LB's board anymore. Trust me, it's all true.

I knew when you let that little leg humper back in the door that no good could come from it. Always gotta be nice to the 'tards. And I called it the other night - as soon as he knew I had a hand in those callers, his pin head would start spinning around and he'd come unhinged. Fuck nuts. Why he don't just die and do everybody a favor, I'll never figure it out. Really, Tim. DIE!!!

I'm out. Bye

Lance stop being so dam sensitive! You have to keep in mind you not talking to guys that just getting into it most members here are veterans so just skip with the B.S. and save that for the noobs. Thanks, new you understand!

Yes, I have a dog to count on when I use the 224 Valkrie because I know it's not enough gun at times most when dealing with a runner, not going to get that laser traj. like I get with a 17 cal. and I do shoot at coyotes at 300 yards plus, dam few bang flops with a 75 or 90 gr. bullet. Maybe I should move up to the 100 gr, what do you think?
Actually, I'll give you the answer, I need to move down to a 52 gr. bullet so I get more vel. which is speed and the Valkrie will match 22-250 performance. Problem is my barrel twist is for heavy bullets so that will have to wait. Look at bright side I got dogs to handle all my bang flops.

Last question for you or anyone else Lance or even Rick. Anyone ever sit in a barn with over 150 coyotes in it moving about freely? I hear and see alot of things you won't hear or see any place else on earth. Coyotes are you teacher!

First of all, I got a panic email from TA last night. He said Lance hates him and he's all upset about it.

After reading the above post, looks like he doesn't want Tim causing trouble, something about electronic callers? That subject causes as much hate as 17 vs 223. Also, boy do they get excited about sounds, especially coyote vocals.

Lance, take it easy. It's not worth it! Now you are disabled? I did not know that? I recall that you have mentioned that you take quite a few pain meds.

What do you mean by that statement about an 8 inch holdover? for a 300 yard shot? Do you have a very short barrel? But, I don't remember what kind of holdover I might need if I went coyote calling with an AR15? That's the whole concept of flat shooting calibers for coyotes. Didn't you used to hunt with a 243 or something like that?

Don't be ragging on Tim, I don't want to ban him. He talks kinda funny but he likes dogs and therefore, he can't be all bad.

So, if you are in love with the AR15 and 223, limit your shots, Bro!

Another thing. Did somebody mention buck mule deer with a 17 caliber rifle? Why was that necessary? Was he charging, and that was all you had except your marine Corps KaBar? I will admit to using inadequate cartridges on large animals and having to shoot them in the head. Maybe that's it?

So, settle down Peanut Gallery. It ain't worth it! I'm pre diabetic now. What the fuck does that mean? Nobody in my family ever had diabetes, why should I suddenly worry about it?

Good hunting. El Bee

Its ok Leonard I'm just pissed because I never came up with any good ideas for myself. But second thought I don't think I was looking to. I did have some good ideas, but they were stolen in my sleep.
Still like to know who invented the rotating caller like lucky duck has? And their reason for it. I know a few years back Lance mentioned it use, thing was he was completely out of the ballpark on that, not one clue and it's on record. [Razz]

Working on a couple seminar outlines this morning and saw this page open in the tabs on a laptop I don't use very often anymore. Probably a waste of my time, but I'll answer LB's questions.

Yes, I'm officially disabled, as of 111921. Filed for disability consideration 3 weeks before Lisa died. Both knees are toast. Bone on bone with bone spurs at every ligament and tendon attachment. Bilateral total knees is only option. Kids aren't quite ready to have me go under the big knife so I soldier thru. Do not recommend being retired to the rocking chair and losing your spouse all in one fell swoop. Lots of changes to endure all at the same time. Thank God for my kids and a few really good friends that have been by my side since day one.

My AR has a 16-inch heavy barrel, so yeah, it's short. Originally got it as a throw gun for the truck with no intentions of no longer using my .22-250 (haven't shot a .243 but a couple times many years ago). The load I cited previously is one I developed to find a round that would keep bobcats intact but still drop coyotes where they stood with minimal sewing since I'm a fur harvester and not just a coyote killer. Like many, I jumped on the Vmax bandwagon when they first came out but several years ago, switched to the spitzers because they did what I wanted them to do. I don't know that I've seen anyone else using the H4198, and it's hard to find any on the shelf, but I went through a lot of different test rounds/ loads and had a lot of conversations with Q and several guys here locally, one being my gun plumber, a retired Sgt. Major who used to be the big dick in charge of the small arms armory for the First Infantry Division at Fort Riley, Kansas, and all were in agreement that I was on the right track. This load rarely gives me a hole much bigger than an inch to sew. Don't mind sewing hides as it's calming work, but reassembling a critter is something different. Unlike some, I don't feel the need to act like my experience and knowledge exceed anyone else's in the room - little man syndrome.

Anyway, I digress. The round I'm using now is lethal out to about 300 yards. I've hit them further, but for drop dead without chasing which I am no longer able to do pain free, I don't often shoot beyond 300. I used to walk 16-20 miles a day with a satchel over my shoulder. Today, 150 feet and my legs go numb from above the knees down. And, Yes, <250y, hold on fur; the holdover at 300 is about 8 inches above the sweet spot.

To answer another question you might have, under the advice of several buddies who shoot precision long range, I sight my AR dead nuts at 65 yards. With that zero, I'm DRT out to that 300 yards using the handloads I shoot. Your experience may say bullshit, and I don't give a shit either way. I know what I've done and rarely call alone anymore, so there are witnesses to almost every shot. My buddy Brooks lurks here to laugh at T-T-T-Timmy and he'll see this. He watched me thread the needle on the one over a terrace last weekend at 159 yards. Not an unusual shot for me anymore.

I'm really stumped as to why T-T-T-Timmy has such a red ass about me. I've never even met the man-child. Had a guy like him lived down the street until about six months ago. Confirmed PTSD psychopath from the Army. Ended up having to get a protection from contact order from him because he hated my Trump flag so bad he couldn't drive past my house without screaming vulgarities at me. He crossed the line, literally, when he mistook my son for being me late one night and jumped out of his car to get in the dirt. I told the police officer, the police chief and the County Attorney all three that next time, if he should cross my curb line, I would invoke my rights under Kansas' Castle doctrine and kill him deader than shit in self defense as he'd already demonstrated a willingness to do us physical harm. This ain't California. I didn't get cuffed because I butt hurt someone. They called the judge and fast tracked the restraining order to his front door, telling him what I said and that I had every goddamned right in the world to do it, and in Kansas, if you get killed from someone with a right to defend themselves, the surviving family is fucked and can't sue the shooter. I have no problems with shooting a mother fucker. I'm no stranger to gunshot wounds.

As to T-T-T-Timmy's remark about his 150 coyotes... Good for you, little buddy. My guy has raised that many and more on his place, including several pairs that were born, bonded with and mated with their partners on facility. Your experience isn't unique, little dude. Except, he didn't just sit with them. LOL He lived with them and interacted with them 24/7/365+. Again, y'ain't the Lone Ranger.

Funny, T-T-T-Timmy, how you're letting me live rent free in your head over the articles I've written. Maybe you need to do a bit of work to sharpen your reading comprehension skills. As I recall, my source for the article on howling and coyote vocabulary was Rich Higgins. I'd been under his tutelage for several years before I penned that article with him as the contributor. I knew what worked and what didn't by then and, as always, gave him full credit. In fact, any time I did an article with a contributor, that person was given the opportunity to read and approve the piece before submission to ensure that their words and thoughts were accurately represented. My editors knew that I would never support any editorial changes that might reflect poorly on a contributor and they honored that stance. If you disagree with anything I wrote about vocalizations, then you're disagreeing with Rich and I think everyone pretty much knows where you rank in the hierarchy between Rich and you.

In fact, you seem to have a problem with any articles I did that contributed to the benefits of others, failing to realize that I sincerely enjoyed putting my friends in the calling community in the limelight for their fifteen minutes of fame. I did a couple articles on Q Wagoner's prowess as a coyote killer. Some regard him as one of the top three coyote killers in the world. Where are you in those rankings? Maybe you wanna challenge Q on whether you know your shit better than he does?

Jay Nistetter, who I've seen posting, was nice enough to contribute to a piece on callmaking and collecting after his book came out. Maybe you have a problem with him writing a book and promoting it? My intent was to illuminate collecting calls and promote his book as a resource for collectors, new and old.

Everytime I'm in a Dunham's or other sporting goods store and see a Buck Bomb or Predator Bomb, I'm reminded of the time LB contributed to my piece, Coyote Nirvana, on misting coyotes. That article laid the foundation for those new products that weren't even a concept until LB shared what he knew with us through my writing. Are you willing to call LB out, label him a whore for prostituting his experience as a campaign caller? C'mon, man! If you're gonna be an ass hat, consistently be an ass hat.

I've mentioned this several times, but at this time every year when I start seeing big responses to estrus and breeding sounds, I'm taken back to the waves of shit I endured when Ronnie Robison shared his story about Booger Red and how Booger Red revealed to him the effectiveness of what Ronnie coined as the "estrus chirp". So-called pros came out of the fucking woodwork accusing me of making that up just to sell an article and that the whole notion was fabricated bullshit.

Ronnie was one of the nicest, most generous people I've ever known. About two years after that article came out, Kansas was totally shut down by a 1-inch layer of ice that killed the entire power grid from border to border in every direction. The morning after my service line was pulled off my house, I was heading east, trying to find a single generator to buy. I was standing in the Topeka Service Area on I-70, waiting to order breakfast, 85 miles and three failed tries from home when my cell rang. It was Ronnie's gravelly voice on the other end of the line. He'd just seen a news report on the ice storm and was calling to ask me if I needed a generator. He was ready to load one up and start driving from Orange, Texas to Abilene, Kansas, just because we were friends. Ronnie was and is the man who discovered the estrus chirp that is now a mainstay in almost every caller menu and calling-related discussion. My personal experience with Ronnie as a man attests to his character. My question, T-T-T-Timmy is are you going to sully his name simply because he was a better caller and contributed more to calling and the world in general than you'll ever be able to do? Go ahead. I'll pay good money to see how the guys here who were friends of his, too, react to that.

I really don't give two shits or a flying fuck about what T-T-T-Timmy says or does. I'm totally stymied by his apparent obsession with me and I can only conclude that he brings the cumulative IQ of this forum down by no less than 20% simply by being here. I drop in here occasionally to see what's shaking with old friends and, without exception, I can't say anything without being attacked by T-T-T-Timmy. If we were within arm's reach, or better yet, range, I'd probably have gut shot him and left him for dead long ago. He's completely unable to read a room, is totally tone deaf to how others see and speak of him, and has been banned from most of the internet, and that says something when you consider the nature of the internet anymore. I've got plenty of guys here in the real world who would love to sit and talk calling with me and understand the value of being respectful. Many of those fellas are the "Who's Who" of calling and I'm willing to bet that none of them are calling T-T-T-Timmy to shoot the shit. In fact, on the rare occasion that his name is invoked in conversation, it sure as hell isn't to praise him for anything. People laugh at you, T-T-T-Timmy. The only friend you appear to have is LB, and he probably grows tired of putting fires out behind you.

I'm truly sorry for telling you to die. I'd much rather watch you suffer a slow, horrendously painful death. You deserve it, little dude.

Now, I'm out. Don't need the aggravation. I've said it before, but thank you to all who have been part of my history as a writer. One thing I've learned since Lisa died is that relationships are the only thing that truly matter. Except for T-T-T-Timmy, every single one of you is valued and appreciated. T-T-T-Timmy can kiss my lily white ass.

Thats the problem Lance, you have no experience or lack most of it. And just write or base your stuff off from someone else's, in other words you don't go out and find out for yourself or even do it enough to know anything about what you talk about. Your sgt. major had to help you, thing is I don't think he has much experience as well. A military Armour does not reload for military use, they fix guns or clean them and hand them out, that simple. Military buys loaded ammo; in other words they don't reload their own.
You give credit for your articles that's nice, must of fell asleep when it was my turn. LOL Just shows how you truly are you only give credit if you don't think you can get away with something, so you thought.
Higgens knows his shit about coyote vocals and what's been written on them, he better he read all the books and studies. The thing is all that knowledge has not done shit for him in other parts of the country. Sure, he been to a few other places and called in a few coyotes but man with all that knowledge or experience should have been stacking them up in other places as well, don't you think?
Cal Taylor finally admitted and came out and said coyotes can behave differently in other parts of the country and now he has my respect.
You write a article no one learns from you or your past experience, they learn from the others that have actually gone out and done it on reg. basis. Too much B.S. with you and that's what I don't care fore or your excuses. No hate here from me Lance no reason to.
But now let's get back to what got you all heated up. The lucky duck E-caller! Your name was not mentioned, and I didn't point you out on anything, just the e-caller and some of its issues and then you jumped in about a dam estrus chirp that don't even sound right coming out of the caller. (sound fades) As for the estrus chirp or even pups' distress sounds, I don't use them as I don't need to. WT has other and better sounds that get the same job done just as well if not better and are none threatening. If those are your go to sounds, then I think you need to take a step back and look at wtf you doing. You not showing me much experience and I don't care how many coyotes you think you killed with witnesses. LOL
Let's talk about the lucky duck that has the rotate feature! ( caller can be turned in 360 degrees) Since you had a big part in the Lucky duck who's idea was it to add that feature and why?
I know the answer. LOL
As far as I know and going by what has been written for years over the forums, I'm the only guy that rotates his caller when sitting on a stand and I keep my caller at my side or arms reach in front of me and rotate whenever I need to get the sound in another direction. Everyone else sets there caller someplace out in front or hang it from a tree or bush and call it good, also reason why they have more blank stands or have to make more stands in a given area. Since you like proof go back into the archives and look it up. Im not looking for any credit for what I did to help your article or credit in the lucky duck and some of its features. I'm not like that and I walk my own path, I go out and find out for myself and figure the game out, that's how you learn and why you still playing catch up or fabricate so many B.S. stories. You mentioned Leonard about misting, yes Leonard has walked the walk he been there done it and made it better and probably has more experience than anyone on that matter.
Guess while I'm at it we can talk about that article of yours that you wrote about calling over bait or dead livestock. You had no experience, so you got your info from a few guys that don't actually call over bait they baby sit the dead pile wait for something to come in.
When I drove through my calling area I'd look for road killed deer or a dead cow out in a pasture and then look and see if they been fed on by coyotes, if so, I would find a place to set up and make a stand. Usually, the coyotes are not far and come in quick with full bellies to boot, which also puts the oh the coyotes not hungry thing to rest. Empty belly full belly if they there to start they going to at least show themselves simple as that.
Weather is crap till tonight, I'm bored so hey why not shoot the shit today, and Lance I don't hate you. LOL

Like said weather the shits so let's do one more before I feed the dogs.

223 AR-15

55 gr. soft point at 3050 f.p.s.

Imr-4198/21.8 Max load from Sierra manual

65 yard zero ( Lances choice)

100 yds. +.4

200 yds. -3.41

250 yds. -7.5

300 yds.-13.5

350 yds. -21.8

According to a graph I looked at the 55 gr. bullet drops like a rock at 200 yads and thereafter.
.8" hold over at 300 yards? I'd say Lance is gut shooting them or just been dam lucky on his bang flops. Be nice to have a bigger avr. of kills (more numbers) to go from but then again doubt if Lance would tell us about the ones that didn't flop. LOL
Lance can keep doing what he wants.

If it was me I'd dial up the zero to 100 or 150 yards if I had to use the 55 gr. on cats/coyotes.
Or better yet switch to the 52 gr. sierra get little more vel. and shoot little flatter. I'd also switch to RE-7 or H-335 if you can find any.
Its been a long time since I looked at a ballistic calculator, and the 223. Dam! So many fucken limits with that round, military shouldn't even be using it to try kill people, just pisses them off so they fight harder. LOL
Q as far as I know don't hunt with a 223 so not much experience there and you need to find better friends that know wtf they are talking about. Come on a 65 yard zero, where they come up with that crap, it just puts another limit on the 223 at that zero range and screw guessing your shots on anything past 200 yards. Joke!. Okay, love to go down Memory Lane as much as the next.

Don't forget, this stuff ain't rocket science, and there is merit in the observation that behavior is regional and due to local conditions. Example, when they start bombing on Barry Goldwater Range, there is no more sense in calling coyotes because you are wasting your time. That doesn't transfer to other states exactly, but there are subtle differences in what works. I know that some places are hopelessly soured by the amateur road warriors, that just turning on a FoxPro causes coyotes to run the other way, find high ground and just stand sentinel. That's when you know somebody, somewhere has queered the calling and worst of all, failed to kill the coyotes who are eager to broadcast warnings every time some amateur maxes out his volume.

Let's just have a fucking beer one of these days and chit chat about the good old days.

Good hunting. El Bee
