Morning huntmasters. Sorry I haven't posted anything lately. Been busy with work and family. Anyhow, taking a trip to go hunt deer and coyotes in the Mark Twain national forest in Missouri next week. I haven't ever called coyotes in timber areas. What's some advice you would give to a flat lander going to the hills to hunt yotes? I am wanting to know type of calls to use, how long the calling sequence should be, stand lenght, and what type of terrain will give me the best shot to give them confidence to come to the call. I am taking my .308 for deer and plan on using my 22-250 and 12 gauge for coyotes. Thanks for your help everyone-tex

Hey Tex !!!
We went on a search party for you and Ariel but only got as far as San Simon before deciding that the Gila Monsters or Chupacabra's got you.

Couple of things;
12 Ga. shotgun w/ copper plated lead BB.
Less volume, more stands.
Bottoms & ridges are your friends.
Thumb thru that book I gave you. Old but still valid info.

Did you ever find a decent place to hunt feral pigs there in Texas ????

I have never hunted anything east of Colorado, as far as continental US is concerned. But I did drive through Missouri and Indiana a few years ago and the impression I had, from a coyote hunting perspective was....Difficult! Yes, shotgun; I guess? It's going to be kinda sorta like turkey hunting.

Calls? Voles, rodent squeaks, dying rabbit would be my choice and a couple energy drinks to keep you from falling asleep because, well sound doesn't travel well through all those friggin' trees and underbrush and you will be there a long time.

I'm not saying it would be a waste of time, but it's about one tick above watching grass grow so if that's your cup of tea, I salute you! And good luck!

I'm grateful for a hunting question, by the way!

Lol, I am alive and well Koko! Been working like crazy since my wife is staying at home with our 2 year daughter. Oil prices are up and they are wanting every gas compressor running 24/7. Hog hunting is very limited for public land in Texas. I know of one county now that the Praire Dog Town Fork of the Red River runs through up here in the Panhandle that still allows hunting. Other than that you are paying to hunt or have to know someone with land that will allow you to hunt. Private property is king in Texas... Sadly.
Thank y'all for the info. I just pulled out the book you gave me, ko ko. Gonna take it on this trip for something to reread when we are hanging out at camp.
I figured calling coyote in wooded country is gonna to be a challenge. When you say it's going to be like turkey hunting, it will be interesting. I figured clear cuts( hunting area), ridges (easy travel routes), bottoms for water and a place to hide will be the targets for calling. Figured wind will still be a factor so I am planning on staying with calling into the wind but have my hunting partner sitting or standing on the other side of the tree so we have a better chance of see ing them come in. I will have to pick up some copper plated BB rounds... All I have are buckshot and number 2 hv loads for my 12 ga. So if sound doesn't travel far stand lengths will be longer (in my area 30 min minimal- 45 min optimal) lol no problem there.
Oh and I have meaning to ask y'all fellas how has the coyotes reacted to the fires of recent? I am very interested to see how they have responded to so much land being burned. -Tex

The fires are generally less of a factor than the long term drought that we've been suffering with.

Leonard pretty much covered it. I killed my first whitetail in that area, adjoining the Army base we call fort lost in the woods. Andy or Shaw would be more familiar with that area. Keep an eye out for poachers running dogs also. They know how to really f up an area. I rarely hunt down there anymore, coyote calling in those hilly wood can be really hard. On deer season it may look like a pumpkin patch with all the hunters wearing orange.

I am heading out to Vic's old neighborhood in a couple weeks. So much easier to hunt coyotes out there.

Hey Dan; I made 8 stands on that road I met you & your brother on and called in exactly two crows. Not exactly a stellar day of outdoorsmanship. [Frown]
Had a pretty decent howling response just before sunrise, too.

We were out there a few weeks ago, went on the other side of town (railroad tracks) of where we met, only called a couple. They are clearing a bunch of land and planting more pecan trees. Saw a pile of dead coyotes on the other side of a fence for an orchard. I guess you call them orchards?

What do you mean, pile of unpulled coyote carcasses? Indicating maybe a contest hunter not harvesting the fur?

About 5 or 6 complete coyotes just dumped in a pile. A few years back I found about 7-10 greys dumped about a mile from this site.

I hunt woods 99% of the time. Take a shotgun, Win Varmint X BB loads or 4buck, Crit'r call PeeWee, stand length of about 15 minutes (3-8 minutes golden), call down in to the hollers, creek bottom areas, find the thickest stuff you can. Don't hunt open woods. Constantly watch the wind. It will swirl and do all manner of crazy things to screw you up. Your luck will go up if you can locate a pack before sun up to know the general direction. Otherwise its cold calling and tough with small farms and permission needed.
I'm no expert like many on this board so YMMV.

I have one question though. I remember a long time ago there was some guy on Predator Masters who posted many hero shots and always full camo'ed up and face mask. Nobody ever found out, or discovered what he looked like; I'd call it ultra obsessive; dozens of photos, as I recall?

Sorry, don't mean to insult you for the same action. I just wonder why the "incognito" photo and why bother? But, I do appreciate the contribution.

LB, I assure you that dude on PM wasn't me! I was banned by Red Toad a long, long time ago. As far as the mask, I guess I'm just paranoid. I don't post my face anywhere. I'm not on fakebook or any other social site except some hunting sites. There are a few pics of me floating around taken at camp outs and such but very few. I remember when Cronk (RIP) was searching the net for my picture. I told him he spent too many nights in gay bars when he was in LE. lol.

I'll delete those pics. I know you guys have forgot more about coyote hunting than I'll every know. I was just trying to give some info about back east hunting that Atexan asked for. No need for the pics.
