Who I had never met before. I had admired his knowledge on reloading and guns and various other issues for years. DAA was in the neighborhood and so we went for a little tour yesterday. Shot a couple coyotes, seen plenty of country and had fun day. He just climbed in the truck and we went. Having never met, you expect a little awkwardness, but not with Dave. Just seemed like we were old pals that hadn't hunted together for a long time.

Shared a similar experience when meeting Dave, a buncha years back. We ronde'd in Wyo for the day to shoot p-dogs. Same scenario, we shook hands, then I jumped in Dave's truck like it was old times! Proceeded to have a most enjoyable day I still fondly recall...

Yeah, I kinda done the same, started out good, then we were stuck in the mud until dark. Wasn't his fault.

Yup. I stayed with Scott for the week and hung out with him the whole time except the day I got to spend hunting with Cal.
I really appreciate him having me. We had a LOT of fun!
Learned quite a bit. About a lot of things.
Those guys have a tough job. I already knew that taking specific coyotes from specific places, at specific times, to reduce livestock losses, is a lot different and a lot harder than the winter time recreational calling I do. But now I have a higher level of appreciation as to just how different and how much harder it really is.
Killing "a" coyote, in an area with lots of coyotes, is one thing. But killing a "specific" coyote, and getting it done quickly to stop lamb killing, is another.
And... When I shot a bona-fide lamb killer, one that we had gone looking for, located, planned an approach to, moved on as soon as the conditions were right, called in and killed, that was some genuine satisfaction.
Searching for dens is hard work.
Cal's dog Ginger is worth her weigh in gold!
I now see much more value in locating than I had previously. I'm going to be doing a lot more of it. Even in winter recreational calling.
I'm sold on vocalizations, too. But, still not too sure just what I'm doing wrong. My success with them has been poor, to say the least, but I honestly can't see that I'm doing anything much different. Note - I do appreciate the variables involved with denning coyotes vs. fall and winter coyotes, but, still... I'll get it though.
Watching Cal's dogs work coyotes was just neater than shit!
I'm on the suppression wagon. Not a matter of if, just how long and in exactly what configuration. I'm going to put together a suppressed rig for sure though. Maybe get a bench racing thread going on it here, think some stuff out loud and get some input from the members here.
Need to go through my pictures, see if a few turned out decent. Should have some of coyotes getting worked by Cal's dogs that are pretty neat!

Absolutely, get a thread going on surpressors. I want to know all about it. I'm not convinced it's something we all need, killed too many to believe that, but exactly what kind of advantage does it give the average hobbyist? Like me.

if you've already got hearing aids, then you can mark one advantage off. That was one reason I got mine, just simply makes shooting much more enjoyable and will delay my need for expensive hearing aids. If it/a suppressor happens to put an extra coyote or three in the truck in a season, that's just icing on the cake. And it WILL put extra coyotes in the truck, no doubt about it.
And for high volume shooting, I still wear ears plugs while shooting with a suppressor. But after a full day of prairie dog shooting I no longer feel like someone kicked me up the side of the head.

Leonard, the primary advantage I see, is handling multiples.
A secondary advantage, that I'm to the point of having a lot of interest in, is preserving what little is left of my hearing.

My only gripe concerning silencers is the gawd dammed government regulation of ownership. I would even concede just adding a serial number to each one & filling out a yellow errrr white 4473 sheet upon new purchases, ala firearms. Hell, in England some areas require their use when firing a firearm. Only recently has my state ( Oklahoma ) allowed their use when hunting (limited) but at least it gives a guy a reason to hope for DEregulation.

About 10 years ago, I had a guy contact me (via) pm's back in the PMS days. Long story short, I met with him and a rotation of guys, from the Puget Sound area. Every spring, we meet up, shoot the hell outta' sage rats. We've all became good friends, emails phone calls ect..
We shoot rats, all day Saturday then go to supper in Ontario-Ore. Every year, They always buy for some reason ? I guess they, consider me their guide ? Lol

That, and the price! There is a lot of sophisticated gear you could buy for the price of a surpressor. In my opinion, those that build and market these things are committing highway robbery.

PS the other thing is; that piece of shit hanging on the barrel is ugly, snags on stuff, alters your balance, and (of course) if you are like me, you slip a rifle into your case between stands, as you drive. Now, it doesn't fit, does it? Even if you don't zip it up, it's still marginal as far as protecting the optics and action....but what do I know?

Not a pretty thing to look at I agree, but for some reason I don't think they look as bad as those Simms barrel de-resonators do-hickys and do a lot more for quality shooting. I guess I don't hunt where snagging on stuff is an issue so that's a non-issue for me. One reason lots of guys are adapting to shorter barrels is to keep a rig from getting "too" long. BUT, adding 10 oz. on the end of a barrel is hardly noticeable. Of course, not all suppressors weigh 10 ounces, or less, but as much as you'd think you'd feel that weight out there, you really don't even notice it.
I hardly ever case my rifle in a day of hunting. Stand to stand, if I'm driving, simply un-load and stick the barrel up next to me in the seat. No big deal there.
All in all, you learn to live with any down faults that you can think of because the pluses far out weigh the negatives. I don't really even care to shoot with anyone that isn't suppressed any more. I still do, but I don't like sitting near them when they do any shooting.
Seems like my ears are getting more sensitive to loud noises these days. I shot a turkey this spring with a shotgun(been many years since I used a shotgun on a turkey), and the guy sitting next to me shot one at the same time, and damn, the ringing was intense for several minutes.

Hey man, Wyoming is a long way from here. I've been a few times, as a tourist and hunter. I'll go places to meet people, but when you live in paradise for 6 months out of the year, sometimes it's hard to get motivated. Hell, KJ had to dangle a pup under my nose.
