Our dog has been trained by the mail lady and the UPS lady to beg for biscuits.
A while back our dog Gus heard the UPS truck coming down the road so he walks out the gate and stands in the road to stop the UPS lady. She said she couldn't run over him. So she stops and Gus walks up and begs for his biscuit.
Then the other day she delivers a package and she had to go into the back to get it. Gus climbs up into the truck to go find her and his biscuit.
He loves chasing the UPS truck down the fence line and it's a race between the two of them who can get to the corner first.

Damn! I'd love to get it through her thick skull that she needs to cultivate a reception with a smile and tail wag! But NO! She barks at everybody! Pedestrians cross the street as they approach on the sidewalk because she barks the minute she sees them, whoever it is, total stranger or somebody like the mail lady in her little truck.
She is happy to see anybody up and down the street, and she barks at them: "Hi there, I'm Tillie and I'd sure like it if you greeted and petted me!"
But, strangers can't interpret a happy bark from an aggressive, threatening bark! She not your average, everyday looking dog, she looks like she has some kind of mission, even people that don't know anything about dogs can see that she apparently has a purpose, maybe she's a pit bull or something?
She's her own worst enemy! She's barking a greeting and most of them see a threat and avoid her. I've talked to her 'til I'm blue in the face but she still greets everybody with a loud and mellow big dog voice, even though she's only 55 pounds. Never exhibits aggression, and if they could stop and think for a minute and judge the body language, hell, she's wagging her tail!
I don't know what to do with her, she's the big bully on Aster Street! If she would just keep her big mouth shut, but apparently that's asking too much? BUT! The dogs know it! People walking their dog and the human interprets aggression and the dog is cool, I'm sure they can tell a friendly bark when they hear it.
What do I do, beat her? Yell at her? She's not making friends by barking at EVERYTHING! There's a guy that comes by on one of those things you stand on, sideways and motorized. She barks! Another kid in a golf cart goes by; she barks! A man with two big Labrador's, black and white; she barks! The Labs are used to her; put her on ignore! She's neighborhood watch, barks at everybody, vehicles, people, crows, squirrels, LIZARDS'! Especially lizards!
What am I to do?

Let me be clear, it came with the dog. Initial trial covered at least 4-5 minutes, decided it wouldn't be practical. And, it looks very uncomfortable, I dunno?

I could probably find it, if I looked around. Yes, that's an option because right now, she's the scourge of Aster Street! Just two days ago, a brave kid walking home from school, I guess? asked if he could pet her, and of course, I said: PLEASE DO!
That's all she wants. When I first got out of the hospital, my son in law was helping me, errands, etc. and I had a technician installing an ice-maker and Corey came up and said; it would be better if you put Tillie outside, this guy is scared to death of her, something about BLACK DOGS? He looked Philipino or something? But, very interesting, she has never come close to biting anybody. It's just unfortunate that people equate barking with aggression because she's the friendliest dog you will ever meet, she just barks "happy". She's barking a greeting and I'll never get it through her thick skull to just wag her tail at strangers. She's interested in other dogs, but seems to prefer people.
edit: the protocol seems to be nose to nose, not nose to butt?

Im a believer in the collars, but like you, my dog had a particular barking habit. He absolutely loved to ride in the truck, when going hunting I always used the kennel strapped in the bed, when just running to town or down the road to dump trash, he just rode in the bed of the truck.
As soon as he loaded up he would bark, and keep barking. I'd yell, get out and scold, you name it. He at times would stop but still squeal some and finally bark when he just couldn't stand it.
I finally put on the collar, and lit him up the minute he let out a sound. Mind you, I cranked it up, so it wasn't simply a warning, but a pretty fair jolt.
I finally just said fuck it, bark if you want, it was a happy bark. When we would reach whatever the destination was, he did not bark at people or other dogs, he just like to bark when moving, his way of laughing I suppose?
Now, my heart aches, wishing I could hear that bark again. Let her bark....you know she's happy, if someone is frightened, figure they don't know how to read a dog....fuck em.

Yeah, so that’s why I don’t want to punish her for happy yapping.
Yes, I’m a responsible neighbor and all that, but conditioning her to suppress her happytalk just doesn’t seem fair.
So, when she gets on my nerves, I yell at her and tell her to knock it off. Otherwise, as I said before, just look at the tail, people! Read doggie body language, asshole!
How much is that doggie in the window? And, note that wagglie tail!

I meant to tell everybody about an excitement at the range. While I was picking up 9mm brass and aluminum on the pistol side, I lost track of Tillie!
I yelled and then I honked the horn....and here she comes barreling out from the creek below the 100 yard range! I guess she just decided to wander a bit while I was distracted. And, it could have been a big deal if there was anybody at the firing line, you know, stray boolets, bleeding, 911!
But, fortunately there wasn't anybody else there so I just yelled at her for wandering off and she went back splashing in the creek, a rare occurrence for this city dog.
You know, the other day, I pulled off behind a car wash and let her roam in a construction site along the freeway. It had chainlink so she couldn't get too lost, but I noticed it was crawling with ground squirrels, and she didn't notice because she had her nose down sniffing all over the place. Oh yeah, she got interested in several smelly holes but she never did actually notice any squirrels romping around, which they weren't doing that, just acting frozen in place and I let her sniff around for at least 20 minutes and she never did see a friggin' squirrel! Some hunting dog she will turn out to be! There you go, the big difference between a SIGHT HOUND AND A SCENT HOUND! You just kinda wish she would raise up and look around once or twice, fer God's sake! But, nooooo! How the hell she is able to find her food bowl, except it's always in the same place!
End of report, just thought y'all needed to know.
