Came close last Friday on getting my depredation cow elk.
Things just didn't line up for me.
Had a bunch of bow hunters move in and camp right across one field we had found some elk coming into. No fresh tracks in the trail coming or going.
So called it a season for this hunt.
It was a give me tag learned a fair amount about the area.

Still have a tag for Nov/Dec cow hunt.

Seems like Idaho is handing out various elk tags like candy? I'm jealous! The one time I applied fo a tag in Idaho, the application fee was a hundred bucks and non refundable. And, I didn't get one. Of course, as a non resident, they don't have to treat you fairly.

It's out and out brawl for NR elk tags and usually sold out in certain until the first day. Everyone applies online and they que up hours before the tags go on sale. Cow tags seem to be the last to go at later dates.
Back country opened yesterday and the last couple of days it's been a parade of various vehicles, trailers and UTV's.

But Idaho has become a circus for NR hunters and all the new people moving in. Can't draw an antelope tag or moose tag now.

The hunting regs have become so confusing that you need to pick an area and only read up on that unit otherwise you'll be cross-eyed and totally confused.

Making jerky today.

All Game and Fish Departments specialize in confusion and obfuscation. Make it as difficult as possible, regulate the living shit out of all drawings and applications.

And, it helps, <snicker> that bunny huggers have infiltrated all the game commissions. They don't want you to be successful, jack the tags and application fees every chance they get and stress all the special hunts, for disabled or air rifle or promote as much weird categories that are restrictive and then claim they are giving the average joe a bunch of increased opportunity. It sucks!

Seems to me that Game & Fish Depts. have discovered that 'application fees' are a cash cow to be milked for all they're worth. Don't need to provide anything other than charge to put a name in a hat. [Confused]

Idaho upped the NR fees on licenses and tags for this season.
The wine was terrible but didn't see any extra tags this season.
In fact most were sold out within a day when it opened.

That's what I've been trying to tell you folks! Game and Fish will always reach for jacking all NON-RESIDENT FEES, because this is an automatic response it's the easiest solution and those pathetic non residents don't have a vote, they know tag increases are almost automatic, and certainly expected, like taking candy from a baby! The whole structure, their entire budget is built around fleecing the non resident hunter.

Our fish and game hadn't raised fees in a lot of years finally raised to come inline with the other states around us. In fact we were fairly cheap for NR for a long time.

No one has to come and hunt, but everyone is on the "mine is the biggest" and "I'm going to pack in miles and get away from everyone." Guess what everyone is reading this shit and doing the same thing. Also most hunters come with a Honda glued to their butt and never get off of it.

I've only trapped out of state and hunted quail in Az. Never have big game hunted out of state and probably never will. How greedy does everyone need to be?

I don't think there is any doubt that people are possessive. Wyoming has best dibs on antelope and you guys from New Jersey, we will take your money and allow you to waste your time after all the goats are behind locked gates on private property. South Dakota does much the same during ring neck season.

You have certain tribes that net huge amounts of their treaty protected salmon and sometimes a non member can snag a steelhead that the seals missed.

A state like Kansas has huge whitetails, but don't even think about it when you live in The People's Republik and have never seen a buck whitetail deer.

Or get crazy in Honolulu and want a crack at a mule deer in Colorado.

What I'm saying is we have 50 states and instead of adjusting our non resident fees for whatever the traffic will bare, and recognizing that there are the haves and the have nots, that maybe Florida should, or could have non resident admission for Disney World. You know, maybe a few bucks more to hunt in Montana, but not 25X more.

Just a general small game license in Arizona was recently $165 but I'm not sure what a resident pays, 10-15 dollars, I think? Maybe?

For those that want to see what is on offer in other states, why not? And, as far as sitting their butt on a Honda, I've seen some pretty cheesy stunts pulled by locals and all the while, the game wardens are bird dogging legal and respectful non residents who already know that they are being singled out for special attention, and the ranchers write C-O-W in spray paint on their stock, for the benefit of those ignorant Kalifornians.

There is no doubt that people have a local attitude and can be hostile and rude to visitors from other states. And, lastly, everybody KNOWS this!

We're the Mecca for out of state hunters here.
I knew hunters/vacationers come here but really didn't know.
It's not just Ca people either. Texas, MI, Minnesota, Pa, Dakotas
It's unreal who and what show up.

I know all about scab local hunters. Idaho seems to have the corner market on them and it's getting worse with all the people who have moved in in the last 4 years.

Yes we have a side by side and use it. But we also do a lot of walking/hiking to find anything too. Don't have 20 year old legs anymore and need extra help sometimes in the hiking department.
But we are curtious to all if we can be.
There are several counties that start with B so they are called killer B's. They seem to be some of the worst type of hunters that come to this area to hunt. You wouldn't believe what they bring for a weeks hunt or less. It's usually a small city with enough firewood to last a year it seems like. They always go back to the same spot and the area is always trampled to dust.

Going to be an interesting season. if we don't get some moisture and cool off we're going to be black by the time snow flies if it does.
Dry as a bone and dust deep and thick.
