three of 'em!
Have been blessed to hunt on great turkey ground, and had another super fun hunt last weekend! Knew this was a good bird, but had no idea it had all them whiskas until I walked up to it...
That's the second multi beard gobbler I've taken off this spot in the last several years. Dunno if that's a genetic thing?

Leonard, a face full of Winny Supreme #4s, about 45yds? That Speed bead makes it easy to center the payload...
As the big gobbler strutted in, had two jakes breathin' down my neck, cluckin' & purrin' as they circled me only feet away. Modern day Dino hunting is good fun!

Nice one. It's been a long time since I've killed a triple beard.
I got this one on opening day this year. Leonard, I moved my Eotech from my 835 to a Stoeger M3500. Makes a huge difference for me and my old eyes.

Turkeys piss me off. I've hunted them twice. Tagged both times. Back in the day when young Matt was shooting for me. BTW, Matt just got out of the Air Force and has moved back home. He and his wife just whelped a pair of fine looking twin lads four months ago and he has his hands full. The service took him to Arkansas, Alaska and Illinois, with a brief vacation in Kirghistan (I think). He wanted to teach me how to call turkeys as payback for teaching him how to call coyotes.
Here's the deal, I know coyotes. I call, a coyote appears. I know what I can get away with with a coyote. If and when the coyotes gets sketchy, I pretty much know ahead of time how it is going to react. There's rhyme and reason. Method to their madness. Experience has taught me how to anticipate and react.
With thunder chickens, they just appear. They can see a flea on a gnat's ass scary well and in color. And if they decide that they don't like the situation, often for no good gaddamned reason, they're bound to do just about anything, and what they do is generally the least reasonable thing they should do. They piss me off.
We bumped a pair of nice toms we were trying to put the sneak on behind a river levee. They flew right over us not thirty feet in the air. Like dirigibles going over us painfully slow. We tried the goose hunting thing but neither of us could resist the urge to lead the target. What a cluster funk.
My first bird spent most of two hours walking back and forth in front of us. All we could see was his head above the green grass beyond a terrace. With just minutes before we were at the end of legal shooting light, I decided it was an all or nothing proposition so I shot. 72 yards. DRT.
Second one was a year later. Had a nice tom out along a grassy buffer strip above his father-in-law's river bottom. Toms were pretty much henned up and we weren't seeing much so we decided to belly crawl a good 70 yards to get into position on him. I can tell you right now that belly crawling with a Mossy 835 across your folded arms is f-ing HARD.
Looks easy.
Ain't.
We got into the tallgrass where we'd last seen him and I look at Matt to my left and here's the bird, 30 yards past him. I signaled Matt to hug the ground and shot right over him. Dangerous? Maybe. Dead turkey? Hell yes.
Too much work for a fat ol'coyote hunter.
Oh, and yeah, nice birds!

So, what about deep frying? Peanut oil about a hundred dollars a gallon and it keeps so well. But, a wild bird is not as "plump" as the farmed birds.
I don't go to Mormon Lake much anymore, but when I did, I always saw turkeys, like as not, I usually saw elk too. It's kind of a not well known but very pleasant corner of the world.

It sure is! And years ago, they had the team roping on Fourth of July and big dance parties at the Mormon Lake Lodge, which burned down a couple times for unknown reasons. But then they moved to Pow Wow to Flag so things settled down a bit. Good times, then the divorce, and Billy died and the girls got the place and anyway, it is a really nice place and I miss it.
Come to think of it, the biggest javelina I ever saw was just outside of Mormon Lake, a road kill and was about the time I started to notice that they weren't just southern critters any more and were common around Prescott and Mormon Lake is a mile high elevation. Not kidding, it didn't used to be that way, years ago.

Nice bird, Semp!
Went back to farm to hunt with my buddy. Swapped the SBE for a Canon Vixia, hoping to get a fun hunt on video...
Things worked out like a charm! Called a slammer gobbler right in off the roost, he came in strutting across the pasture for over 150yds & took a face full of 5s @ 25 yds....EXCELLENT!!!
Only issue was, I musta 'double tapped' the RECORD button....IDIOT! We had front row seats for the show, but nothing ever recorded. Man, I sure BONED that one! Friggin huge tom, too. Inch and a half spurs , and two pounds heavier than my triple beard...almost 24lbs!
As for cooking, I like to strip the breasts, bread 'em with panko and deep fry. Or, take a whole marinated breast, wrap in bacon and foil, then bake for an hour. Legs & thighs go in a pot of tomato sauce to simmer for a few hours & have over pasta...YUM!
