You can see the Upland Star from the I-10 freeway 4 miles down hill and I understand pilots also point out the star when approaching Ontario International. Anyway, it's been a local institution for many years.
That property in San Antonio Heights, which is the county area uphill beyond the city limits of Upland is very high dollar residential property, multimillion etc.

I read something a few years ago about the gentleman who bought that property along with the covenant concerning the star. He's a retired airline pilot and although I don't remember exactly how much it costs to operate the star for the entire season, it's actually a fair amount of money. But, if he can afford to buy anything up there, he can probably well afford it?
The whole cluster of homes up on the hill overlooking our city was built by one family. One at a time, and the wife acted as the sales agent. The son contributed his artwork in the form of extensive stained glass, practically in every room of every house. I haven't counted them, one of my daughter's friend lives right there on Holly drive, but there must be 30 homes, maybe fifty, but it's an exclusive neighborhood, for sure. Shelley's friend is John Holiday who owns the two rock quarries on opposite borders of Upland, east and west, and a fleet of cement trucks. I'm sure he is doing well.
There are a few prominent people in this town, a few MLB players, and the television evangelist, Peter Poppoff, the Lewis family; who are major homebuilders, and a number of ordinary millionaires. There is the general aviation Cable Airport, and a few private jets which indicate there must be money around here somewhere, although I don't have any of it. ![[Frown]](frown.gif)
All in all, it's a nice little town of about 77,000 or so, and nobody knows where it is, for some reason? The word, "Upland" draws a blank stare, and a question;"uh, where is Upland?" That was my first question, as well. Even though I had driven through town many times on the way to Mt. Baldy, the local ski resort. If you have been to Mt. baldy, you have been to Upland. As far as I know, it's the tallest mountain in Southern California, somewhere around 12,000 ft. It would be gigantic, if not for the Sierra's Mt.Whitney. Hell, just google Upland, there must be lots of stuff I've missed? And, nobody knows where it is? But, if you say it's next to Claremont, a town less than half the size, and everybody knows where Claremont is. Go figure.

edit: maybe why nobody knows is because it's strictly a bedroom community. To the south, Ontario has an International Airport. To the west we have the Claremont Colleges. East is Rancho Cucamonga, one of the fastest growing cities in California. But, all we have is thousands of single family homes, a couple gas stations and an inferiority complex, as the Beverly Hills of San Bernardino County.

I pulled up the satellite map of Upland, I don't know how one can tell where Upland ends, and Cucamonga or Claremont or any other suburb of LA ends or begins....looks like it should all just be called Los angles?
Haven't set foot in California in over 25 years,, and no pressing reason to ever go again, one fucked up place.

Yes, that's a pretty accurate assessment. There are no open spaces to speak of, although there could be a sign on a main drag, but they are few and far between. It's your responsibility to know where you are. The border between Los Angeles County and San Bernardino County are coincidental, (the same) with the border of Upland and Claremont. My property taxes are substantially lower, and I think our sales taxes are a half a cent lower which doesn't matter much unless you are buying a new truck.
Also, it does qualify as "one fucked up place" and thank you for noticing! But don't blame me. Blame my liberal neighbors who outvote me. Yes, fucked up and thanks for reminding me.

PS BTW, you wouldn't believe the laws that have just taken effect at the first of the year concerning assault weapons, ammo, and handguns. I don't know (exactly) what they are, but I hear they are Draconian?
PPS and don't forget, this used to be a decent place to live once upon a time. It's coming your way. And, I won't have an ounce of sympathy for you.

Where every residence has at least a couple watch goats? And, so deprived, they don't even have a McDonald's, let alone a Walmart. That pretty much defines rural.

Yeah, that's a pisser! Wear something with a lot of pockets like cargo shorts. What I have been doing is putting the shit right back in the cart and rolling it out to the truck where I toss it in the back and let it roll around until I get home.
So the enviroNAZI's have won this battle. I read something a while ago about an honest survey that showed these "one time use, throw away bags contribute no more than 4% of the litter everywhere. Basically, it's not a problem and shows that dedicated wackos can control the whole population of sheep.
So far though, it's only grocery stores that are cracking down, I think they will sell you a bag for 10 cents? But every other business, book stores, take outs, etc are providing bags.
And, it is also proved that it's untrue that these bags are one time. People reuse them all the time.

Well up to zero now in "hickville" yep plenty of goats around that's for sure ! My neighbor has 35 of em right now. Plenty of beef & dairy cattle also.
Interesting little town pop~1500 has nine church's I think ? two bars, a co-op, little pizza place & a hamburger joint. Oh yeah & a little grocery store/liquor store.

The 2 Bars, (honky Tonks) Pizza shop, Burger Joint and Groc. store/liquor. How many are foreign owned? Around here, it would be (like) 80%. That would be all except the Bars.

You know, Mexicans are the only ones I know that eat goat? What I hear is they smell bad, but maybe that's just the rams? And, the meat is tough, requires marinating. What do you think?
edit: nine churches? Boy that sounds like two for every denomination, and I bet you have a Mormon church, a stake, or whatever they call them?

I forgot to mention, busy @ work. We do have a gas station owned by "rag-heads" Whatever they look "Aribiac" (sp) or whatever ?
The HS kids go there because it's close to school. Other than that the rest of us get gas @ the co-op unless going somewhere else ? We kinda avoid 'em.
Anyway, I think ya have to go a long ways to avoid Wally-Mart. Eight miles from me. The good news is the next one is about 25 miles east. Going N/W about a 125 miles that way to the next one. La Grande Oregon to be exact.
We do have a Home Depot in Ontario. Bought a space heater there tonight. One of the last, there were two left.
Ok, I'm done for now. If ya want to visit LB this isn't the year. Another 8"-12" of snow this weekend. It's crazy. Way over normal..
