Had a great deer hunt. Possibly the last deer I'll ever kill, almost certainly the last one with a rifle. Knowing that, going in, I decided to use my Dad' pre '64 M70 in .270 Win. He bought it new while in high school.

I spent a little time with the rifle over the last couple months and it was shooting lights out. So no worries there. Being a featherweight, and having a fixed 4x, it was especially well suited for still hunting in the cover, which was the only way to effectively hunt the area I was in.

Anyway... The end was almost anti climactic. Was just heading out in the afternoon to hunt till dark and decided to shoot this one not far from the road. Neck shot was the only one being offered, and had to take it off-hand, couldn't see him when I tried to kneel. But no drama. Neck shot at 80 yards and that was the end of that.

Just under 27". Huge swelled neck. Pretty big body. A nice buck. Fitting last one, for me probably and the rifle I hope not, but who knows. My Son just doesn't have the interest. My Daughter does now, but I fear she'll grow out of it. Maybe a grandchild someday, will kill another mule deer with that old .270. I sure hope somebody does.

Great story and great buck, Dave! Having taken a deer with my dad's rifle last season myself, I can relate!

If you are done shooting deer, that is a great one to end with!

Koko, I passed on one maybe just a hair nicer the day before in a spot that would have taken me a miserable day and a half to get him out from.

I'm happy with that decision [Big Grin] .

Nice Buck Dave. Some of my favorite memories are hunting deer with my Dad. He has that same rifle but in .30-06..

My sons don't have that hunting drive much either. My 24 year old has alittle more desire than my 17 year old. But my 22 year old daughter wants absolutley nothing to do with hunting.lol

Love it!!!

Looks like a bruiser of a buck!
I know you've 'killed' plenty more with your DSLR, but its nice to actually see one hit the dirt & make a memory with your Dad's rifle....

Good goin', Dave!

Very nice buck and a fitting end should you choose to make him the last. I'm considering doing the same thing soon.

Awesome story Dave. I have an old rem 700 adl in 270 that was my dads. I used it and so has my son. He took it to Mt with him and is going to take a Mulie with it. I offered awhile back to cannibalize the rifle and build what he wanted, but he said he wanted it just like it was when his granddad used it. Kinda made me proud.

Great story Dave; what a fitting way to turn the page. A guy couldn't ask for a better buck to end his run with. I can certainly understand hanging it up, Im going mule deer hunting at the end of the week, and it wouldn't trouble me a bit if it were my last.
As far as big game hunting, I would really like to bow hunt a bull elk one more time, but don't know if that's in the cards.
Great photos as always, your a talented son-of-a-gun that's for sure.

Yeah, that's a good one, better than my best, I think? I have a first year Model 700, but it's in 308, a caliber I usually sneer at. But, along the same line, nostalgia wise, I guess it could still kill a deer?

Yes, you are a lucky boy, Dave.

But on the recruitment situation, we can blame the indoctrination in every aspect of society. I'm lucky that my son and grandsons have the hunting gene. Daughter? literally, would not kill a mouse, or even a spider which I consider pretty hardcore. Oh well.

Good hunting. El Bee

Good job Dave....nice buck!
It's funny how some of your kids take to hunting.
I have four children, the two older boys love to hunt the younger boy could care less about hunting and the baby of the group is a girl that loves to hunt.

I hope someone in your family will take up hunting. So they can feel the same way you did when you used your dads gun. It's a wonderful feeling!

Beautiful buck and great story Dave. Good on you for giving it one more trip. And who knows, there might be more down the road, but with a new partner.

I find myself contemplating more and more about the "last of something." Especially, when it comes to my Dad, my 2 boys, the outdoors and hunting.

My Dad is 77 and even though he is pretty active, hunting really isn't in the books anymore. My kids seemed to have moved on to other interests and are about out of the house.

I find myself making sure to appreciate the moments as they happen now because things will be changing in the near future. Not necessarily for the bad mind you, just turning the page of life to a new chapter.

Great looking buck! Sadly I never hunted with my dad. He never owned a rifle although he talked about it quite a bit.

He liked to fish but he only took me fishing once when I was about 4. When I was in my late 20's I took him out a few times.
