...is the magic number.
Why is it that everyone making videos or otherwise promoting themselves have "30 years of experience"? Every caller I see on tv or meet in the field has "30 years of experience".

That is pretty funny especially considering I started calling coyotes in late1985..... Thus 30 years ago.....lol

Called my first coyote Feb '79..........Yup. 30 years ago.
I like the videos where the hero claims 30 years experience and he looks to be only about 30 years old.

Funny you mention that as just the other day I was thinking the same thing as I watched a foxpro caller giving instructions to a new guy.3o years experience in 30 minutes.1962 for me but I don't want to crunch the numbers as I don't think I'm that old LOL.

lol...30 years it is then.
I guess my point is, I think a lot of guys that started 10 years ago like to say they have 25-30 years experience to give themselves some sort of street cred in thier mind.

Like Koko said though, it is funny to see a guy that's say 33-35 years old that says he has 30 years of experience.
Just because your dad took you on a stand or two when you were 3 or 4 doesn't equate to calling experience.lol
I remember taking my now 24 year old son out calling for the first time when he was like 4 years old so I guess he's got 20 years of calling experience. Even though he doesn't call coyotes very often anymore.lol

When you talk about the years of experience stuff, I always think of Byron South. The only thing he has thirty years experience is in self-promotion.

There are plenty more guys than Byron that talk the talk, but can't walk the walk, as the saying goes. Thankfully I'm not to that 30 year mark yet, so I don't have to worry about it.

30 is a nice round number that supposedly would signify plenty of field experience while still having the physical capabilities to get it done.
A little gray in the hair and beard adds to the overall image of being at the top of their game. Too much gray though and the 30-yr-vet will lose some cred with the young guys. It's all about marketing themselves as best they can to sell whatever they are peddling. Most of this was said in jest, but that seems to be the image put forth.
On a side note; while in the grocery store, I took a trip down the magazine aisle. Not a predator mag to be found except Fur Fins Feathers. Last time I went down that aisle, a year or so back, there was a couple pred mags in the hunting section. None now, but lots of gun techy stuff. Has the wave peaked on the pred market?
Edit: Forgot to mention the only other place in town, that had much of a magazine supply was Hastings and they are in the process of closing up right now. I think the whole print industry, newpapers, magazines, books, etc.. are going the way of the Wooly Mammoth.

The pathetic situation, here in coocoo Southern California, the closest you will see is the kinda faggy Men's Fitness and Health magazines. Nothing even like Outdoor Life. Pretty much emasculated magazine racks.
But, even worse is that Walmart doesn't sell guns anymore, in California and we have a Dicks Sporting Goods, (which I had never heard of) that opened here in Upland. I went in there and looked around. No guns, no hunting gear, just workout stuff, sneakers tennis and golf stuff.
So, they have succeded in closing down the mom and pop gunshops and now, even the chain stores carry no firearms and at one Walmart I went into recently, they only had photos of hunting knives, behind the locked case.
They, (Walmart) does carry ammo, if you show up at 6:00A.M. you might even score some rimfire. It's mainly a mail order proposition, and since bullets are heavy, the shipping is exorbitant.
Doesn't look good for the long term. Don't get me started on waiting 10 days even for long guns. That's bullshit. I need to get the hell out of here. Last one out, bring the flag with ya.

edit: "Gun Techi Stuff" Man, I get pretty sick of the AR magazines, and the latest Glock models. Even American Hunter has way too much handgun and black gun articles. I really don't know of a hardcore hunting magazine anymore?

Lonny, I've no idea, one way or another, about the predator industry peaking or not. But the print media industry... Can you say buggy whips?

Leonard, The gun business is actually booming here.
There has been a huge increase in places that manufacture firearms, firearm parts, and ammo. But this is a very gun friendly part of the world and they seem to be taking advantage the increased want for firearm related stuff.
Move on up. You'll fit right in!

Hey Dave,
I was just thinking of you the other day. The wife and I were looking into getting an entry level DSLR camera. Nothing too serious. The $5-700 dollar range seems about right. With just a bit of research the Nikon 3300 package through Costco looks kinda promising?
Any suggestions for a camera greenhorn looking for a entry level DSLR?

Lonny, I'm not conversant in Nikon, but, IMO, in the same price range, Nikon vs. Canon is just personal preference. I don't think one has much if any real advantage over the other.
And... Costco package deals are GOOD prices!
So, if you like it and it's in your budget, I think you'd be hard pressed to do better for the dollar.
That said... And this is a "do as I say, not as I do" type deal, but, you should at least take a peak around in the used market. There are an awful lot of people that get in, get the hot running wants for the next level and are selling lightly used gear at fire sale prices. I know that every time I have moved up, either camera body or lens, the guy who has bought my old gear has gotten one HELLUVA deal, compared to buying new.
Last setup I sold, a guy got my old camera and my old wildlife lens, plus extras, for less than I paid for just that lens. And it was all working as good as new.
And, really, most of the lenses I own, I've bought used, myself.

Dave, Thanks a bunch for the advice.
For us, it's pretty much a Nikon or Canon deal at this point due to the package deals Costco offers. From the people I have talked with, it seems preference comes down to what you get used to using and what seems to make sense in your mind. Right now I'm a blank slate so could go either way.
I just started doing some dabbling in the used market and you are right, a guy can save some serious money. I was a bit leery of getting a "gray market" camera if going used though.
Anyway, thanks again for the input. Your advice is always welcome and valued.
