....what I was trying to ascertain, by your description of that bunch that wouldn't come in and prevented the loaner from coming in, is; where's the wind blowing? Where I come from, they don't maintain their position vis a vie where you are, unless you are unlucky enough to be directly down wind of their location. Therefore, at least one of those coyotes will circle downwind of your position. If they don't, then they must have seen your approach and the only thing unusual is they don't leave, unless they might be protecting a kill or something?
Anyway, coyotes don't act like that, out here. As sure as the sun rises in the morning, a coyote will circle downwind; at some point. They may approach on a string, but if anything bothers them at all, even curiosity, they will start the closest way downwind. They know automatically and never take the long way around. If it's a tossup, because they are directly downwind, they will move counter clockwise, but I haven't a clue, why?
What I'm saying is the situation, as you have presented it, is puzzling? They either had you all figured out before you turned on your gear, or something else? For instance, one time, at night, I had an animal that appeared eager, came in from something like a half a mile and for some reason, he hung up, between 300/400 yards and so he was stationary and well marked and I shot him. Walking out there, I saw the problem. He was laying there, in plain sight, at the edge of a deep ravine that stretched a long ways in both directions. I didn't recover that animal until midmorning the next day when we found a road that got to the other side. So, in some cases, the coyote has a very good reason for checking up. In your scenario, there is no reason for them to stay put. A coyote is hardly ever satisfied knowing where you are and you knowing where he is and he not doing something about it, which is, getting out of sight, whatever it takes. Anyway, that's my snap evaluation of the situation, with what I know of the facts.
