How’s everyone’s Coyote Calling Season going thus far? I know it’s early but wondering how it’s going. Funny thing is for me this year Utah has proven to be more productive than Nevada. Truth is this is the second straight year that it’s been the case. I know Nevada has been riddled with drought and Fires so that’s probably a big part of it.
But numbers are quite noticeably down. We went out west(Nevada) for a few days recently and managed to kill only 8 Coyotes and most of them were concentrated in one area. Not much sign anywhere, and hardly any rabbits.
Different story here in the areas I’ve been hunting so far in Utah. I never thought I would say I have been having better success in Utah than Nevada...lol
Just curious how everyone else is fairing.....

I can't say that I ever had that experience. I believe it though, and for the reasons you state.

Yeah I feel the same way. Haven’t seen it that bad.. Last year was pretty bad. But not like this year. Oh there are little pockets of Coyotes but tracks and Scat were almost nonexistent in some of those areas. We put on close to 2000 miles on the truck looking for Coyotes that we typically kill 7-10 a day years past. Didn’t even hear much howling at night either. We’re heading out again in a couple weeks to a different area to see if it’s any better. Otherwise I’ll just stick close to home and kill the local population......

A bit early for fur down this way so went out this morning with pointed sticks to 'that road' where Ariel done killed everything last year.
No howling.
No tracks.
No scat.
No rabbits & no raptors.
Seven good stands and zero coyote, fox or bobcat.
Even broke out the Krusty Krier call.
Oh well, there's an archery tournament this Sat.

Hearing reports Nevada, Oregon and Idaho populations are in the toilet. I know in central Idaho we're not hearing any coyotes and little to no sign at all.

I was in northern Nevada for a few days a couple weeks ago. Only seen and killed 4 coyotes. Very little scat, no rabbits seen.

Well I’m glad I’m not the only one that’s seeing it. I know I’ve lost a step the last couple years but I’m starting to feel like I don’t know what the hell I’m doing anymore.....lol

Chad that's interesting. Do you suppose folks are driving thru Utah to get to Nevada & gave up hunting in Utah ?
Of course drought-fires all that stuff come into play.
I'm thinking Nevada has not been the secret place for quite some time now.
I can only guess ? I do think FoxPro plays into this somehow ? I know that can be disputed. Many could come on & post their results & make me look a fool.
If you play apples to apples & consider the young dummies out there & old that set up shitty stands & expect results while only educating the population.
(edit) the world is in love with electronics. I just wonder if electronic callers give the deception that this game is easier than might appear ?

I’m absolutely positive it’s not calling pressure. I’ve seen it when it’s that.... Usually they are just more reluctant to come in. They will sit on yonder ridge and watch you or Howl but not come in. But you still see the tracks, scat and hear them at night. This is something different... Very little sign including prey species.
Hell there’s been a lot of Pressure on them since Leonard and Danny were killing the hell out of them back in the 60’s... Difference is they killed them nowadays the new guys just wise em up after they miss.lol I know this new generation of Electronics callers ain’t killing them all. lol
Im sure it’s drought and all the fires and probably the rabbit decline.Combined with a tougher Winter last year..Did see a a few in agriculture areas where the mice,gophers, and the PD’s were around.
About Utah calling. Seems like it is pretty par for the course.... It’s always been alittle tougher calling here. Especially when you don’t get off the beaten path a ways. That’s where I see a lot of calling pressure, been that way for 20+ years though. But that’s manageable with a few changes in tactics or getting into areas most callers don’t want to mess with.

went out for the first time yesterday. Only did 11 stands but eastern Colo. looks to have decent numbers still. Called 8, killed 8.

Coyotes numbers are still pretty solid out here in Arizona and New Mexico. Killed 18 in two days last weekend and it’s finally starting to really cool down so hopefully we can pile them up.
As for Nevada you are definitely not the first person I have heard talk about the low numbers in Nevada, although I do have a good buddy in southern Idaho who is still doing really well. He is actually on a three day calling trip in Nevada as we speak so I’m interested to see how he does.

I disagree with all of you. These coyotes sometimes utilize the landscape differently than the experts say.
I think coyote utilization of the landscape in the Great Basin ecosystem is just as cyclical as the population of the predators and prey. When the coyotes are thick and spread across all the good habitat, every swinging dick with a foxpro and an AR-15 looks like a hero. On years like this, people complain and say they’re all gone. They're not gone.
Remember when the Johnson boys hunted the World's in '99 or '00 and killed 15 coyotes in one day? They hunted a really small area. They went back the next day and killed 5 more by 10am and made check-in by noon.
Ever notice in the Great Basin you'll see unknown teams show up at big calling contests and win? Nobody knows them, no contest history, they show up and smoke all the known teams with proven track records, and they never repeat it. Go ask them a seen/kill number. It’s usually shocking.
Back in 1943 when Robert “Pud” Long trapped 632 coyotes in one month.. a feat that is almost unfathomable. You realize just how insurmountable that level of iron operation is, considering he did it out of 2wd Ford Farm truck, extremely far from any operational base. I don't care that he preferred 10 day checks and was killing feral horses all along his line. Simply compare that level of production to the high number coon longliners as far as equipment visited/remakes made/miles covered, and it puts into perspective that he must have been somewhat concentrated in a spot where he was running >80% take/trap for the whole month. And he did it in a place where UTcaller likes to hunt.
Earlier this year we were chopper hunting, got to a hunting area at sunup. All sign on the snow was old. We kept asking each other where are they? By the second hour we were flying higher and faster to cover more ground. Nothing. Total coyotes that fuel cycle was 4 seen and 4 killed in over 4 hours. After hunting that massive swath of country, we landed at the fuel truck, topped off, and said we gotta go somewhere else. We took off and crossed a 10,000’ ridge, and coming down the backside, we found them: killing 78 in 2 hours (83 seen). One 45 minute period we killed 42. At one time we had 17 in sight of the chopper. And just like you snapped your fingers, we were out of them; like you turned off a switch.
Couple days later, we hunted a big swath of calving ranges; 14/14 for over 6 hours of time. One last stop before setting down for the day; 15 in 13 minutes (saw 17).
There have been some other remarkable aerial kills out here; 387 in 4 days, 141 in 10.25 hours, etc. Many attempts to repeat it, never even come close, because conditions change and the coyotes move.
95% of the coyotes are on 5% of the landscape. It's a unique phenomena I haven't seen elsewhere to the extreme I've seen here (at times) and it's far beyond the little concentrations you sometimes see on a large carcass. Sometimes it stays like this for a couple weeks, sometimes couple months, sometimes for a year. The pockets move. There will be a massive swatch of country completely devoid of any coyotes, then there'll be 8-10 coyotes/square mile for 3-4 sections, and then those will all be gone in a matter of days/weeks, with a new concentration in a formerly devoid area many miles away.
But yeah, they’re all gone. Let's keep that rhetoric up. I hear there's lots in Texas.

WMC, you definitely bring up a lot of good points worth considering. You spend a lot more time out amongst them in Nevada than I do. For me it has really seemed unusual but again we did find pockets of Coyotes even though the majority of areas were pretty devoid. But it does give me hope.

Those are some incredible numbers cited, Trevor. But, I know that sometimes the stars do align, like that time I killed six on one stand, can't explain it, it just happened.

PS come to think of it, I had a conversation with a man who has been successful on a certain "place", and he said almost the same thing about how they move around and where to find them, which does explain a few of my hopes that didn't pan out. As Burnham once said; sometimes this shit don't work!

I can only dream about "...11 stands...called 8, killed 8" and "killed 18 in two days..." and then the helicopter numbers are not in my wildest dreams. I'm so far down the ladder from you guys I don't even know why I post on this board. Kentucky is a different world.

Yeah but. They don't bother to post about the times they got skunked. Who writes stuff like; umm? made 15 stands yesterday, didn't see a thing! Predator hunters are kinda macho, second only to fishermen when it comes to bragging about their 85 percent stands. I remember a few times I killed 12 in a row but there have been lots of times where They did nothing but howl at me, all morning. As Burnham once said, sometimes this shit don't work. And, that's in Texas, fer cripes sake, behind locked gates!
