Part way thru reading "Now ... Ramblings from The Old Derelict Bowhunter" by Dr. Ed Ashby. Outstanding book !!!! He's a bowhunter who did an elaborate study on arrow lethality that is head and shoulders above anything else ever done. His book is focused on the pointed stick but I'm pretty sure rifle guys would enjoy the read and maybe pick up an idea or three. Have somebody get it for you for Xmas......... or you can end up with another tie.

Yeah, the last tie that I had ended up as decoration on a 3D target. His book title....... not mine. The more I read it , the more impressed with this guy I am. Has hunted every continent except Antarctica & thinks that the memories are more important that 'stuff'.

Converse.
That book is getting better & better. The chapter on blood trails in relation to wind direction was great.

I have some very unknown and valuable techniques for tracking at night, learned at the school of hard knocks. Everybody says, come back in the morning but I could be 30 miles away and that much closer to check in by morning.
It's meaningless to most of you guys that don't do contests and don't night hunt so I will save my breath.
But relating tracking to wind direction is a new one on me?
A good rule of thumb that has never failed me on cats is; if they are bad hurt, they will go down hill. Period. If they climb uphill, and they ALL want to climb uphill, if they can, (?) you probably won't catch up to them. And, always paying attention to the amount of blood. It's very important to find the exact spot where they went down so you can evaluate condition, maybe even find a turd. Cats are kind of crybabies, and usually are satisfied just getting over the hill and out of sight. This is where a dog earns his keep, if you got one? And, if you got one, keep him on a lead. Otherwise, you might walk right past an injured cat and he will for sure let you
Good hunting. El Bee

I consider myself a somewhat fair to middling tracker but this guy is operating on a level way beyond what I know. His take on wind direction is when hit an animal goes into the flight mode. Once it somewhat settles down it will revert to type and travel into the wind. In the event of dangerous game when wounded there is the real possibility of an ambush indicated by what he calls a 'buttonhook' turn to the downwind. Critter can then lay up watching one way and smelling the other for pursuit. He describes following blood trails as being as much mental as physical. Seems he spent a lot of time with African native trackers. Serious stuff.
