gentlmen,

Today, I received a special communique from T&PC's editor Paul Wait. he has given me the greenlight to post it here and elsewhere so you guys can get the lowdown on what the issue will consist of. His message to me is as follows:

Predator Hunting 2004-2005 will be out on national newsstands on or about Nov. 1. We are distributing 128,000 copies, so it should be widely available. There are no subscriptions to this product, it is strictly newsstand for now. We plan to start out as an annual, hoping to expand it to 2 or 4 issues a year very quickly. That, of course, depends on ad support and how it is received by predator hunters. We are already committed to doing it again next year, so I doubt this will be a one-and-done product. After people see it, I'm confident they'll want more. By the way, all of the content is fresh. No reruns. It'll be a full-color magazine on glossy paper. Here's the feature slate:

1) An Interview with Steve Craig: the (Mountian) Lion King. Steve is recognized as the foremost expert in the world on calling mountain lions. We'll get into what it takes to call in and kill a cougar. It's a fascinating Q&A, one of the very best I've ever done.

2) Duping Bobcats, by Randy Watson. Randy is an expert night caller from Texas who has killed as many as 6 bobcats in one night (many callers don't kill that many in a lifetime). He's known in predator hunting circles as the guy to hire as a guide if you want to kill a bobcat.

3) Bear Calling, by Dexter Oliver. Dexter is a wildlife researcher from Arizona who has called black bears for many years. He has traveled throughout the world to call predators, including jaguars.

4) Night Tactics for Foxes, by Dave Kaprocki. Dave is a fox-calling demon, having killed reds and grays at night in Pennsylvania for 30 years. He'll detail his proven system for calling foxes in farm country.

5) Successful Setup Strategies for Coyotes, by Lance Homman. Lance is a master caller from Kansas who continually studies predators and tries new calling techniques to get the edge. As a bonus, he's an excellent writer.

6) Hunting Different Habitat Types for Coyotes, by Ted Stotler. Ted is an expert caller from California who has been duping coyotes for 25 years. He understands where to find coyotes in all types of terrain, and he'll share his knowledge.

7) Late-Season Coyotes, by Dave Hastings. Dave is a long-time predator caller from Nebraska who knows how to fool pressured coyotes that have heard and seen what weekend callers throw at them. He'll explain how to call tough coyotes.

8) Raccoon Calling, by Roy Greenfield. Roy is well known throughout fur-harvesting circles as an authority on calling raccoons. He will share the basics, and throw in a few tricks to bring more masked bandits running to the call.

9) Predator Guns and Ammo, by Mike Schoby. Mike is a rising star in the predator hunting field, having published the book, Successful Predator Calling, in 2003. He will detail types of rifles, shotguns and ammunition for predator hunting.

10) Buying the Best Electronic Caller for You, by Paul Wait. I will detail the considerations every predator hunter should take into account when purchasing a caller. I'll cover tape players, CD callers and self-contained sound units.

11) Saving the Fur, by Mike Wilhite. Mike is an expert fur-handler who will explain how to take care of coyotes, foxes and bobcats in the field and while skinning, with an eye toward having the hide tanned for a trophy display.

12) Open-Country Calling (a new story) by Gerry Blair. The ole Beastmaster details his return to calling after surviving a serious ailment that rendered him comatose. Classic Gerry Blair.

13) Why Rabbits Scream, by Serge Lariviere. Serge is a trapper, predator caller and furbearer biologist who'll reveal why rabbits cry when they're caught by a predator. And the answer isn't what you might think it is.

In addition, we will be running Pro Pointers, which are tips from calling industry experts, as drop-ins to feature articles throughout the magazine. We'll have a list of clubs and hunts, and a few product sidebars. I honestly believe this will be the best collection of predator calling articles ever assembled in a single magazine.
